BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox will start their season with seating improvements to the 97-year old stadium.

Red Sox president Larry Lucchino gave a tour of the stadium to Boston mayor Thomas Menino on Thursday, four days before the opener against Tampa Bay. Lucchino says a few more years of upgrades will be done and the park should last for another 40 to 50 years.

This is the eighth straight year of improvements. There are more seats in the upper right field stands.

So in several years, you could park your flying car to watch a game at a 150-year-old building

At the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY in the '60's they had a guy who flew around with a jet-pack strapped to his back. Seeing that as a child made me believe that as an adult I would be traveling by jet-pack. Forty-plus years later and I am still waiting. The most futuristic thing we have are ugly bubble looking hybrid cars made mainly out of plastic. What a disappointment. At least the 50's and 60's cars had lots of chrome and character.

If you thought drunken drivers were a problem, imagine 20 million drunken pilots.

Personal flight technology has been suppressed until we develop a way to control it properly. I really believe that.

Meanwhile, how badly do the scalpers have to skin us before the Sox admit that supply can't keep up with demand and build a bigger ballpark?

I don't think the problem is the potential for accidents in the air. Jet pack travel is not high velocity like a jet plane. The problem would probably be policing air routes so idiots would not be flying over homes and other private property. The jet propulsion is downward so anything under it could be damaged and people below could be injured.

Fenway thread turns to flying car thread in 6 posts. Nice.

I hope it doesn't last 50 years. They'll keep adding seats, which will only make it less comfortable. I honestly can't imagine Fenway in 2059.

Eventually the Red Sox are either going to have to leave Boston for the suburbs, or leave Boston for some other part of the world. Fenway's plot of land is just insufficient to do much more than they're doing.

Really disappointing. I'd like to see a new stadium. But seems how I don't have to sit in the seats, it doesn't matter too much to me.

I like Fenway. There's something to be said about having a ballpark almost as storied as the team. Who cares if we don't have a Morimoto restaurant opening up under the grandstand.

That said, if the team ever moves to the suburbs I'll kill it. I will actually kill the team. If a new park can't be in the Fenway area (whenever that time comes) it should be on the South Boston Waterfront, forcing the city to turn the f***ing silver line into an actual subway line.

The truth is...not only do you need a new stadium, but you need more seats.

Fenway is historic and all, but allow some fans who aren't millionaires to sit out there. I hate what the Yankees are doing with the seating, but I understand the business end of it.

All of the new stadiums are being built with fewer seats. Its economically sound and its not going to change. The Red Sox, once renovations are complete, will actually be pretty close to the average capacity of all new stadiums, somewhere in the low 40,000s

Well, the reason they've been adding new seats every year is because a it's a historic stadium, and the management knows how much it means to the fans. But the second they get the idea Red Sox fans want something new, they'll probably build a new stadium. Whether that's 50 years from now or 10 years, we'll see.

You'll probably be dead.

I'll be crushed the day they close it. Baseball, the Sox, and Fenway were a huge part of my childhood and still play an important part in my life. Whenever I go to Fenway, I still to this day get goosebumps when I approach the park - EVERY F&CKING TIME! I don't care if I have to twist myself into a pretzel and watch the game backwards, I'd rather see the Sox play there than see any other game at any other park.

I second that. I love Fenway and don't need the BS all the new stadiums have.

I felt the same way about the old stadium, but it was time. It was a huge part of my life, and I've probably been to more games than all of you guys combined. However, the only constant in life is change.

When you guys get a little older, you'll probably feel the same way.

 I need an estimate here.

Not deserving of its own thread' date=' but from the weather reports I just peeked at, the Sox are gonna get their s*** rained out on Monday.[/quote']

I'll kill someone I swear I'll do it.

That is so funny 700...I often joke with my friends about how we were promised jet packs as kids. I clearly remember those commercials. Where's my damn jet pack! I want Fenway to crumble into the sea before they tear it down. Ugly bubble cars were already done by? Yep...The Gremlin. Talk about history repeating itself. Or the sucker born every minute theory.

Fenway has to stay open as long as possible. With baseball struggling with its image, I think historic parks like Fenway and Wrigley field are the sort of fixtures that are pivitol to keeping modern baseball associated with its rich history. I think closing parks like Fenway would be yet another devestating PR blow to the MLB.

I'd like to see a new ballpark at some point, but not until after the 2012 season to commemorate 100 years in Fenway Park. I think 2013 would be the IDEAL year to open a new stadium. Also, I know its super gimicky, but the monster would need to be built as part of a new stadium.

If they build a new stadium it would need to be a Fenway replica.

That said, Henry/Theo/Luchino always look for the "undervalued commodity" and I hink they see that having an actual historical relic has its value. It is absolutely an American icon and has added value because of it.

If they made the decision to build a new one I would get it, and I would love it, but I think for the next 10 years or so the history of Fenway will make it even more unique now that Yankee Stadium is gone.

Where would they put a new stadium? Are there any open spaces of land big enough in the city? I remember back before the Henry group took over and they were talking about who was going to buy the team, and whether the new group might move the team to Foxboro. UGHHHHHHHH.

Fenway will have the draw to the people who have never been to Fenway before. Those who watch games on a regular basis would love to have a new stadium.

Just for the 05 season, I went to 22 games
