(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I didn't see anywhere else to ask the question.)

By some stroke of luck, I'm drafting first in my fantasy league. I know all about the SS position scarcity, but should I take Pujols instead of Hanley Ramirez?

My thinking:

Pujols is just a monster. He's the most consistent baseball player of his generation. Last year, everyone was worried about his elbow but he still dominated. I know Hanley Ramirez gets a ton of steals (which may decrease since he'll be batting 3rd) and that he should have more RBIs this year, but I just don't know if I'm really sold on him.

If I had first pick, I would take Hanley because the offense he will provide at the SS position will provide a tremendous advantage over the rest of the league, moreso than what Pujols will give you.

I'd go with Hanley...but if you take Pujols, you won't suffer either. There is a big dropoff between 2 and 3 IMO. After Hanley and Pujols, there's a bit of a drop to the next tier.

I was offered Braun, Vlady and Lackey today for Morneau, Crawford and Carpenter. I turned it down cause Lackey's elbow concerns me

What are the scoring categories, the standard triple crown + steals & runs? Then it's easily Hanley. You can get another 30/100/.300/100 ® firstbaseman in much later rounds, but the 3 big SS will be gone by the 10th pick. Those three guys that score in all 5 categories put you at a positional advantage over the rest of the league. If you have a shot at one of them in the 1st round, take it.

Is Carpenter Chris Carpenter?

I would have made that deal because Braun is the best player in the deal, but then again I think the question would have to be who would your 1B be if you deal Morneau.

Yea, Chris Carpenter. If I made the deal, I'd slide Atkins into the 1B role and have to get Alex Gordon or something to be my 3B

I think that's terrible. Ramirez or Pujols. No brainer for 1-2.

Exactly.

I wouldn't take Rollins with a first round pick, probably not even a 2nd round pick.

Are you kidding? If he doesn't get hurt, he's going to put up something like this....

.280, 20 HR, 90 RBI, 110 R, 40 SB

...as a SS.

Now, this kid has the #1 pick, and I wouldn't use that on him, but he should go top-10 in every league. Hanley, Reyes, and Rollins are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack at SS. The dropoff from them to everyone else is so huge, which is why they go early in drafts.

I don't like it.

You lose a lot of steals by giving up Crawford.

Yea, but I still have BJ Upton and Shane Victorino. Braun also gets a few steals and I have Russ Martin as my catcher.

I took Rollins with the 11th overall pick in a draft. I think you can do it as long as you get some power with your next pick, which I did getting Longoria

Yeah' date=' Rollins is definitely first round material. Not worthy of the first or second pick, though.[/quote']

On Yahoo, Rollins is ranked sixth or seventh on their list, so it would make sense to pick him up if you can later in the first round. I have two fantasy teams, and on the first one I picked up Ryan Braun with my first pick partly because I hadn't looked at the stats for the shortstops. On my second draft, I had the eleventh pick in the first round, so I took Rollins.

Yeah, so you did the same as me. I was a little annoyed at the time though cuz in my first draft, I had the eighth pick, and it was like c'mon! I wanted the first pick so I could get Hanley!

And has anyone noticed how low the pitchers are this year? I took Tim Lincecum on one draft and thought he'd be further up, and I remember guys like CC and Santana being up at the top in years past. Is there just not as good pitching out there this year?

I think it's more of a case of starting pitching being so deep. You can still win without drafting a CC, Johan or Lincecum so those guys just aren't as valued as guys who produce top-notch offensive statistics

I gave:

Prince Fielder

kelly johnson

jose reyes

I got:

Ian Kinsler

stephen drew

arod

Jake peavy

I was offered this deal a couple of days ago in my family league and i accepted it. At first glance i did not wanna give away my 1st round pick in reyes but idk as long as arod comes back strong i think this deal will end up in my favor as i got a top tier pitcher in peavy and a monster in kinsler. Also, i replaced reyes will a pretty formitable shortstop in stephen drew.

Is this a good deal?

I wouldn't have done that. Reyes is a Top 3 pick IMO, and Fielder could be a 1st rounder as well. With A-Rod's injury, none of the guys you got are 1st rounders, maybe not even 2nd. Kinsler, A-Rod and Peavy are all great players but not on the level of Reyes or Fielder this year. I also expect Johnson to have a good year.

you dont think kinsler would at least be a solid second round pick? On august 17th when he got hurt he was hitting .317 with 18 homers,70 rbi and 26 stolen bases. not to mention he already had 102 runs scored. But ya its true that it was only his first season really putting those numbers up. But idk i just like how well rounded his numbers were.

But your right, I gave up alot in fielder and reyes to get those four guys
