Jeter was third in all of baseball in hitting into double plays over the last three years. He has a higher OBP than Damon in his career. He breaks up two lefties in Gardner and Damon [i expect Gardner to steal a lot more bases as he tries to avoid Jeter's double plays].

Jeter isn't the speed threat Damon still is but that's a marginal stat when it comes to this. It definitely makes sense
