Huge and beastly, WMP was awesome to have as a bench player. I miss seeing him hit lasers over the green monster. Wily Mo hurt himself all last year for the Nats, and it looks like he won't even have a spot on the Nats' 25-man roster. Any chance that the Sox would grab him if he was put on the trading block? I

So if he can't even make the Nats, we CLEARLY need this guy to be a part of our club.

Guys, we got one good year and one bad year out of Wily Mo. Just remember that before you go overboard on the OP for the suggestion, mmk?

Serious answer here, Rocco fills that role now, and probably better than WMP would.

He was a guy who struck out about once every three at-bats which was tolerable in 2006 since he was productive but he lost all that productivity in 2007 and thus, became completely worthless. He has no place in this organization.

WMP seems like he'll be able to be picked up for hardly anything.

Yes, and that makes it tempting, especially if you could slip him through wavers. The drawback of the initial WMP acquisition is that you couldn't. If you can get him into Pawtucket for depth then by all means go for it.

And then he turned around and went to the Nationals and ripped the cover off the ball. Only to fall into the same cycle of streakiness next year and wind up on the bench.

There's little doubt that Pena has a billion holes in his swing and for someone who strikes out that much he needs to be WAY more selective. But if Wily Mo has proven one thing it's that he can go on a tear at the big league level. And if you can get a guy with his level of raw power onto a minor league roster you HAVE to do it. That's the definition of low-risk, high-reward.

I for one think he needs to seriously shorten his swing. He has the strength to hit it out without swinging for the highway at every at bat like he does. He certainly proved that he can hit a ball a long way at any rate. WIth the right hitting coach I think there's still a chance for Wily Mo.

You need to dream bigger in life.

He has no plate discipline, he strikes out a ton, and his OBP sucks. His Minor League stats are about the same. It's a wonder he ever got called up.

Yea, he just doesn't get on base enough to get away with being that one-dimensional otherwise he'd be a poor man's Adam Dunn

By the 2002 Cincinatti Reds? No it isn't. That team only scored 709 runs. ANYTHING that might put someone across the plate was worth trying

I seriously don't get the Wily Mo hate. What's up with that? Seriously, I don't see what WMP ever did to us that was that terrible. He hit well in '06. and while he didn't in '07 he fetched back Carter, a nice minor league hitter with far better fundamentals than Pena had that we could stash in the minors until we needed him.

All told, there have been far worse acquisitions for the Sox than WMP.

Also, keeping Arroyo doesn't save us in 2006 and keeping him beyond 06 probably costs us Wakefield so that's a wash.

Whenever I think of Wily Mo I always think of that laser homerun he hit at Fenway that hit the back wall of one of the monster seats and bounced all the way back to the second base bag. I think NESN timed it as leaving the yard in under 2 seconds or something.

A stroke of genius, my hat off to you, sir.

Dude could hit lasers. I remember a monster grand slam in Baltimore.

He started with us...we don't really want him back. Usually, your good players come to us, and you end up with our crap. Historically at least.

Let me know when you retire Mark Bellhorn and Kevin Cash's numbers

everybody got caught up in his raw power, but nobody really understood how bad of an offensive player he was. His approach sucked, he hardly ever made contact and he never could hit to the situation. Yes, when he hit the ball it was usually a missile, but that was so few and far between that he eventually ran out of chances. I'll tell you what, if Arroyo was still on this team for 2009, I'd say you'd have a much better chance than where you stand now. Arroyo would man that 5 hole every 5th day and would be giving you close to 200IP. Thats all you need out of that slot in the rotation. But now? You have one pitcher with a torn labrum who's been increasingly fragile over the past couple seasons and you have a 5a and 5b who are both hurt.

Arroyo has about a 4.50 ERA pitching in the f***ing NL Cental, which is about what Wakefield gives you in the AL East. I know he pitches in a launching pad but that's not enough to make an argument he wouldn't get obliterated in the AL East.

And Wakefield's pitched an average of 185 IP over the past two season so I don't know where you get the increasingly fragile part.

It's all moot anyway, even if the WMP trade never happened, Arroyo wouldn't be on this team anymore if only because of his price tag

No discipline, couldn't hit a curve ball, no work ethic, has the body of an NFL LB but rival Drew in durability. Should I keep going?

Your sum up his time in Boston as "not that terrible"....

Do I need to run the Red flag up the pole for you to see it?

Wily Mo is the pinnacle of baseball entertainment. You get to see a baseball endanger the structural integrity of the stadium if he makes contact.
