The Red Sox will be able to afford their players when it comes time for a raise, but there are concerns if they can do it with Teixeira on the books.

It's going to be tough for them to keep everone around because there aren't that many people coming off the payroll with large contracts in the next 3-4 years. Sure, I think they get it done easily if they make only minor moves in free agency and trade, but any big spending in those areas probably puts an incumbent on the chopping block. Papelbon, Youkilis, Pedroia, and Lester all made the league minimum last year and will all be making in excess of $10M if they hit the market in 3-4 years. Bay is still young and worth keeping around, but it will cost them. Beckett, with another good season, is probably due a raise. I think a big splash in free agency probably squeezes one of these guys out, which isn't the end of the world, but it is interesting.

EDIT: And Wake will retire at some point in the near future. Replacing his consistently league average innings will cost them about $6M more marginally. Every little bit adds up.

Youk has put together three solid campaign in a row, it's not like he's only had one good year.

That said, comparing the two over the last three years, Tex leads in each of the following categories overall AND in most categories (except BA I thin in 2008) each individual year: Average, HRs, RBIs, OBP, OPS.

However the gap between the two has closed quite a bit. The how long has the guy been doing it argument? I think of Wade Boggs and how long it took him to become the Red Sox starting 3B...Youk has finally arrived in a similar fashion, wheras Tex made a splash at a younger age...that simply illustrates that some guys develop at different rates.

Personally I don't think the difference between them is all that great, certainly not justified by the salary differences we're about to see. That said, it concerns me that potentially the Sox would pay Tex those $$ and what that means for Youk in terms of an extension some time soon.

If you take ORS's and this point into consideration, then getting Teixeira makes sense in a whole other level, since taking his age into account, he would actually be a part of this core of players when in a couple of years all of their salaries will be close enough to his that if we assume he maintains his current level of production, his salary might seem quite affordable given market value, not to mention the immediate (if not so substantial) upgrade over Mike Lowell, because one of the things most people aren't taking into account is that Mike's signed for a couple more years, meaning more time for decline while Tex is in the middle of his prime years.

I'm gonna go ahead and jump on the "Get Tex" bandwagon.

Thanks for everything Coco. You'll be missed in CF. Glad you already have a WS ring and that now you'll get to play every day. But, the Royals? Oh well, best of luck to you.

Hopefully Ramon Ramirez will be a good addition to the pen.

We've enjoyed Coco here in KC, although his BA is down, and he's battled a shoulder injury.

On the flip side, we sure do miss Ramirez. Our late inning relievers have struggled this season.

I like Coco, and want him back next season, but not for his $8M option...

I still think the trade was fair. I love Coco but he's getting more chances to earn his next contract than he would in Boston, so he wins. The Royals badly needed some speed and defense up the middle, so they win. And Boston gets Ramon Ramirez, so we definitely win.

the trade was fair. You gave a former all star caliber OFer a second chance in the least pressurized major league environment known to man and you got back a reliever with solid stuff who has battled inconsistency and injury through his short career. If both reached their peaks, then Coco would be worth more than a middle inning reliever obviously, but it was a move that has worked out for both sides to this point

I just read in the Herald that Co Co's season is done. Apparently he has torn the labrum (sp) in his right shoulder and will have season ending surgery to repair it. Recovery is expected to take 4-6 months.

Additionally, the Royals may consider buying out his $8 Mil. contact for next year for $500 K.

I never realized how pathetic his arm and power was till we got him.

He shut his mouth, smiled a lot and did very well out there defensively and occasionally got on base.

He did outplay ells last year and earned the job in CF but he wasnt in the plans for the long haul.

Too bad about his shoulder, i got nothing bad to say about the guy.
