The Red Sox have been discussing deals to send Coco Crisp to Kansas City and at least one other team, SI.com has confirmed.

Nothing solid yet. But it does seem as though the move is likely to happen.

Ramirez and Bowden/Hadagone to Texas for Salty now?

Texas wanted Buchholz, or 2 of Hadagone/Bowden/Masterson.

The Boston Red Sox have traded outfielder Coco Crisp to the Kansas City Royals for relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez, SI.com has confirmed.

First confirmation from a decent source.

The Red Sox have traded center fielder Coco Crisp to the Royals for righthanded relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez, a major league baseball source has confirmed to the Globe's Nick Cafardo.

The deal was first reported this morning on Kansas City sports radio station WHB 810 by Brian McRae, a former Royals outfielder who is a part owner of the station. A Red Sox spokesperson told MLB.com the club had no comment on the report.

Ramirez is an interesting acquisition for the Red Sox -- his arrival would suggest that the ball club is at least considering using Justin Masterson as a starter. Reports say the 27-year-old throws in the low 90s, with an outstanding curveball and a changeup that acts like a splitter.

He's coming off a very good 2008 season, having posted a 2.64 ERA in 71.2 innings this year while striking out 70. Ramirez allowed just two home runs, and held righthanders to a .153 average in 137 at-bats. He was particularly effective in September, allowing just one earned run in four hits in 9.2 innings (0.93 ERA).

Ramirez broke into the majors in 2006 with the Colorado Rockies, posting a 3.46 ERA in 67.2 innings over 61 appearances.

Crisp, 29, batted .283 with seven homers, 41 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 361 at-bats last season, his third in Boston. An excellent fielder, started 98 games in center field while sharing the job with rookie Jacoby Ellsbury. He batted .315 in the second half.

Trading Crisp clears a chunk of payroll for the Red Sox -- he will earn $5.7 million in 2009, with a club option for 2010 for $8 million or a $500,000 buyout.

During an on-air interview with WHB 810 earlier this morning, Royals senior adviser Mike Arbuckle would not confirm that the deal was complete, but said he liked Crisp as a player.

"I would say Coco is a good player and we're always interested in getting good players," said Arbuckle, who recently joined the Royals after working in the front office of the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.

The trade of Coco Crisp to the Royals for Ramon Ramirez, confirmed by a team source, will be announced officially by the Red Sox at noon today.

Who do we have as a 4th outfielder when jd drew breaks down?

crisp played great d and hit .300 after the break and could run like a gazelle.

if drew plays 145 games this wont be an issue, ellsbury needs to grow up a bit and learn how to hit the inside stuff theyve been feeding him,bay is solid as a rock.

we will need a 4th outfielder none the less

jacoby elsbury was a huge disappointment after may 15th

Thats too much for a catching prospect who so far has struggled at the MLB level.

I wasn't saying Salty alone. They could be more intersted in Teagarden

Getting a top C prospect for a SP( I know Bowden is high up there) and a RP is not really that bad.

"Pitching, Tommy my boy, not 4th outfielders. They are a dime a dozen. It always has been about pitching and it always will be"

I understand your concern Sean, and Coco certainly is no WMP, but a versatile 4th is much easier to come by than an excellent reliever.

For those who know me know I am not a optimist at all. But you get a young righty out of the pen with eletric stuff to replace Timlin thats a steal. Lets not forget that we now expect only 6 ip out of a starter MDC and Okajima can't do it everyday. Aardsma sucks he can't play at all this guy adds depth. Plus we shed un needed payroll Coco sucks other then tracking the ball down, s*** arm no power at the dish makes mistakes on which base to throw to. Rare but I applaud Theo here.

He doesnt turn 24 until May, thats one key factor

Career total (154 games)

132 for 506 (.261 avg) 26 Doubles, Triple, 14 HRs, 59 RBIs, 66 Runs, 50 Walks, 149 Ks

Now thats from being used on an inconsistent basis. Id like to see what he could do if given a full time gig in Boston

excellent reliever you say?

hes better than timlin but lets see him perform under the brite lights and 35,000 screaming fans every day before we give him the cy young, masterson had that role towards the end of the year and didnt do all that bad.

kansas city is a team on the rise, they could win 75 games this year.

we had a weaker offense last year when manny left and still made game 7 of the pennant.

if josh beckett pitched like he was capable perhaps wed be discussing a repeat,if jon lester had a little more than 1 run to work with...well you get the drift

we needed to revamp the offense due to the lack of power we carry into this season.

i figured crisp would be a part of that and the 4th outfielder in boston is essentially a starter based on our right fielder who averages 110 games a year, too early to decide whats what, lets wait for the dust to settle before we make judgments.

Ellsbury wasn't a huge disappointment. He just had huge expectations coming off an insane post season run. Of course the league would catch up to him. Same thing happened to Pedroia and just about eveyone else in the league. It's all about adjustments.

This was only his first year in the league, cut him some slack.

Those of you who continue to bash Ellsbury for a sub par season, are probably the same who wanted Pedroias head in his 1st season while he was struggling. The ones calling for a trade of Belliard, or more playing time for Alex f***ing Cora. Now you look like fools, Pedroia is a MVP.

Some of you have no patience. And should learn not to jump to conclusions so fast. If he doesn't pan out, I will be the first to admit it. But I won't do it after 1 season.

As far as 4th OF go, there are plenty of decent options out there. Maybe not as fast as Crisp. But they offer something else in there repetoire.

Baldelli is a great option. Can play all 3 spots and has no pre dispostion about playing everyday. He knows he can't. Essentially he might be the perfect 4th OF.

The report of the trade that just came by on ESPN News was immediately followed by a story citing the Red Sox and Yankees locked in a battle for A.J. Burnett. With all due respect to Jeremy Affeldt and Ryan Dempster...the Hot Stove season has officially begun!

True, unless someone goes down and then what since he can't play two days in a row?

Not I, good sir. I thought Pedroia would be awesome and warned everyone last offseason about tempering their expectations for Ellsbury (leadoff hitter for the next ten years!!!!!)

Baldelli is not a great option because of his health condition.

Jason Michaels might be someone to explore, though.
