I said if we could take 1/2 in LA we'd be in great shape. So what does that make us now? Clinch an ALCS berth tomorrow and get some rest before the Rays.

Los Angeles Angels (0-2) at Boston Red Sox (2-0)

I know this is an idea that's going to be met by some scrutiny...but I sit Beckett. He's a competitor and of course he'll want to be on the hill, but it doesn't make sense to me.

Oblique injuries have a habit of lingering around for a while. Even though he had a great side session by all accounts, I'd rather have Wake fill in for this game and give Beckett's oblique muscle some more rest. We're up 2-0...I see if Wake can close this out and if not, pitch Beckett Game 4.

If this was a Do-Or-Die game, without question you throw Josh. It's not, so in my opinion, you don't.

I disagree, I don't think the team would run him out there if they weren't completely confident in his health. If the team believes that he is fine I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be allowed to pitch.

I think this opens a can of worms that there's really no sense in opening. One, since Beckett has already been cleared to throw in game 3, it could lead to the perception that it's OK to lose it. Whether or not that is the intended message, the perception counts. Two, supposing they do lose, and the chances are much greater that they will, you then face a game 4 against their ace who pitched well in game 1. Maybe he doesn't make that mistake pitch in game 4 and you are going back to their house for a deciding game. Three, if there is a game 4, you only gain one extra day of rest for Beckett. I think the risk isn't mitigated that much by the one extra day. Finally, supposing he isn't sharp and Beckett loses game 3, remember, he may be fine medically, but he hasn't thrown a game in over a week, you could have him if needed on 2 days rest if there is a game 5. You lose that if he pitches game 4.

Don't get complacent. Go for the throat.

I agree completely. You never, ever give away a game in a short series. I am sure that the delicate princess Beckett is just fine and he'll come out chucking 97 mph. Let's just hope that he has a good curve and mixes it up.

Agreed, Sox shouldnt rest Beckett just because they have a 2-0 lead. Joe Saunders has always pitched against them, and with Byrd/Wakefield... better chance the balls could be flying high over the monster if their control is off the slightest

ridiculous, you don't give the Angels ANY chance of getting back into this thing

Beckett's been 100% cleared and had what was called an "aggressive" BP session on Thursday.

http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2008/10/the_real_series_starts_now.html

The good news? During what manager Terry Francona termed an "aggressive" side session Thursday, Beckett passed with flying colors. He threw 67 pitches, roughly half from the windup, half from the stretch. He threw fastballs, cutters, curves, and changeups. At no point did Beckett alter his delivery or seem limited by his oblique injury. At no point did he really rest, pause or give cause for wonder.

Besides, the whole point of the long series is to NOT use your 4th starter.

Yeah, Beckett goes tomorrow. The ALCS is interesting, because the rest from Gm 1-4 is 3 days, but the rest from 2-5 is 4 days, as is 3-6. Do you have a 3 man and just have Lester go on 3 days rest, making it Lester-Dice-Beckett-Lester-Dice-Beckett-Lester? Or do you give guys an extra day and go 4 man, making it Lester-Dice-Beckett-Byrd/Wakefield-Lester-Dice-Beckett?

EDIT: Come to think of it, I would play it by ear. Throw your guys out there in the first 3 games. If you're up 2-1 or 3-0, go Byrd or Wakefield and don't risk using Lester too much. If you're down 1-2 or 0-3, I think you have to go Lester.

Let's get there first. This is the sport of baseball after all, and anything could happen and frequently does.

I needed the money. My job wouldn't give me the time off of work, and I couldn't get a passport, so I couldn't fly with Ami's parents to Vietnam for the family ceremony with her ashes...

So Im taking a week off instead of three and going up to our annual campsite in Maine. Her parents gave me half of the ashes, so I'm going to spread some in the clearing in the forest where we had our campsite and put the rest into the river rapids where we always went swimming. It seemed more important than the game for me.
