Granted there still is a month left in the season, but every team has established by now what kind of team they are. Looking back on what everyone thought about each team going into the season, who do you guys think are the most disappointing teams of 2008?

In my book, the Tigers, Guardians and Braves were all sexy picks to reach or win the World Series and each has been a horrendous disappointment.

I'd go with Seattle. They had that big trade to get Erik Bedard and most everyone thought they would either win the AL West or at least get the Wild Card. Hasn't exactly worked out for them.

The Tigers and Guardians have been extremely disappointing as well, but not as much as the Mariners.

Disappointment

1. NY Yankees - too much money invested to not reach the playoffs

2. Cleveland - Cliff Lee should win Cy Young...so they have that to look forward to

3. Detroit - nice offense but they forgot pitching = winning

Suprise

1. Tampa Bay - on paper you had to notice the great talent in the rotation but not results like this..wow

2. Minnesota - no Santana....no problem

3. San Francisco - go look at there lineup and explain to me how they aren't the worst team in baseball...I guess I have an idea (Tim Lincecum)

Wait, is it really considered "dissapointing" if we're all really glad about a specific team's struggles?

I've changed my mind..in terms of the Yankees, I think they're my least dissapointing team.

seattle in the al with clevleand and detroit as guests of honor

sandiego in the nl but colorado should be included

seattle had pitching,a great pen and an offense led by ichiro

that offense sucked all year and their pitching, led by bedard was horrid

detroits putrid start ended them before they started and cleveland quit in the middle of the year by selling off cc and their bats never performed as capable

sandiego seemed to be amongst the best in baseball last year when they throttled us in a 3 game set last summer, chris young and the rest of these guys laid down like 10cent whores the night before rent was due last september and never got back up.

colorado was never that good to begin with but they did have a good 6 week run to get their pennant.

the yanks finished about where i figured they would when they started the season with no pitching and ended the season with no pitching.

somewhere in the middle the offense disappeared as well.

arod is the biggest gagger since Erica Boyer retired from porn.

defensively they suck, their outfield defense is real bad and their infielders, with the exception of cano have no range and are on the downside of their careers...molina is a good catcher, posada wont be around by year 3 of his awesome 4 year deal.

who is surprised by them failing to win this year?

theyve surprised me since 2006 by making the playoffs.

I'm going to look at this in terms of payroll change.

The Tigers' 2007 opening day payroll was $95m.

The Tigers' 2008 opening day payroll was $138m.

The Tigers increase their opening day payroll, year over year, by $43m or 45%.

Based upon their current winning percentage, they'd win 78 games this year...so they spend $43m to be 10 games WORSE than last year?

That sucks and the Tigers get my vote.

is that right?

how do you come to that conclusion?

ryan dempster was their 1 come playoff time

zambrano, who is their stud, couldnt pitch at all after his no no.

they play in a league that is a step above AAA and had the luxury of clinching a month ago.

then they got pummelled against an L.A. team that had derek lowe as their #1, a guy who wasnt even offered a contract by american league clubs after dazzling the planet in the 2004 playoffs.

man for man id take the white sox.

where would the cubs finish in the al central?

my guess is they would fit somewhere above kc and behind detroit

Cubs: 97 wins (98 pythag), 2nd in NL in BA, 1st in OBP, 1st in SLG, 1st in R, 2nd in H, 2nd in ERA, 1st in K, 1 in Hits allowed.

White Sox: 89 wins (89 pythag), 11th in AL in BA, 9th in OBP, 2nd in SLG, 5th in R, 10th in H, 6th in ERA, 3rd in K, 6th in Hits allowed.

I cant believe Mike Greenberg picked Seattle to win the Series. Haha.

There were quite a few people who had high hopes for Seattle, but you have to go with the Tigers as the biggest disappointment. Everyone remembers all that huge hype when they made the trade with the Marlins. Most, if not all, of the predictions on mainstream sites have the Tigers in leading the central.

all the experts got it wrong. the sexy picks of almost all of them coming into this year were Detroit, Seattle, Atlanta and Cleveland, combined record: 288-360

hard not to like cleveland this year after being a game away from the series last year.

what happened over there?

seattle on the other hand looked ready to make a serious run on paper but their money guys outside of ichiro really ate it all year long.

that bullpen was great in 07 but this year they never really had a chance to make a difference cause their starters sucked so bad...with bedard, hernandez, washburn and other guys who escape me at this time as starters it was amazing that they did so poorly.

detroit got out of the box so slow they just didnt have time to recover in the very competetive central in spite of cabrerra having a great year moving to the a.l..

dontrelle willis busted and based on his last 18 months of pitching he's at a stage in his career where he can go either way,he maybe done as an effective starter.

i like the guy and his enthusiasm and hope he bounces back but i dont know if thats possible.

atlanta??

i dont know why people had atlanta going anywhere.

what happened over there?

Sabathia had an awful start to the year and they waited until he finally straightened out to trade him. Carmona went into the tank. Betancourt went into the tank. Perez wasn't as effective as he was last year. The bottom finally fell out completely on Borowski. Hafner was injured most of the year and sucked hard when he wasn't and Martinez was injured and had a MAJOR power outage.

Literally the only guys who can say they had a good year were Sizemore, Shoppach and Lee

tigers would be the most disappointing in my opinion. They got Cabrera and Willis for a huge chunk of prospects yet Cabrera had a modest season and Willis was a complete bust. Along with that their pitching has been really bad..
