The Red Sox acquired AAAA shortstop Josh Wilson and assigned him to Pawtucket.

The acquisition means little but there was one possibly very significant thing that happened not long afterward.

They assigned Josh Wilson the number 12 in Pawtucket.

Significance? That was Jed Lowrie's Pawtucket number, and it's Lowrie's number again in Boston. If they were counting on seeing Lowrie again at AAA, wouldn't they hold that number in reserve?

Thoughts?

Not this year. Even if Lugo comes back, rosters expand in less then a month, plus Lowrie has been playing very well since his last call up.

yea, I really dont see Lugo being activated before the rosters expand and if Lowrie keeps up anything close to the performance he's given us so far, Lugo is as good as gone in the off-season

I'd say Lugo has lost his job but he could be useful as a pinch-runner and a better pinch-hit option than Cora

What's AAAA?

A description of players who play well enough in AAA but never get promoted and/or struggle in the bigs because of some flaw or hole in their game (Jeff Bailey types)

The only way Lugo gets his job back is if Theo tells Tito that Lugo needs to play. Lowrie has better hands and a better stick. While Lugo brings more range and a bit better OBP, he cannot hit the ball into an alley to save his life. Also, this is just the beginning for Lowrie. While I think his defense will be akin to jeter's (limited range, but good hands and a good arm), he will more than make up for it with his lack of E's on routine plays and his developing gap power.

Comps at Soxprospects.com for Lowrie are Carlos Guillen and Bill Mueller. I'll take that, and then some.

I don't think he's quite Jeterish, at least not with the bat, but he's shown a nice little ability to make situational contact and he's been very valuable for us.

In the minors, he showed a .280-15-70 ish ceiling offensively (or .280/.350/.450 for the OBP-worshippers)

If you can get a shortstop who can do that, and get by defensively, you definitely take it.

I was on the same plane with him when we acquired him a few years ago. They stuck him in coach......waaaaay in the back. New he wouldnt last long.

Fans would be in a massive uproar if Lugo played over Lowrie upon his return

And lucky for the Boston Red Sox this FO doesn't let the fans dictate the personnel decisions made.

You're right. We'd all rather read about your diet.

I would say it is. I'd be willing to bet there are more people interested in losing weight on this site rather than a minor league player's number. Go back to sleep.

Being a Red Sox fan is inherently wrong. Two negatives cancel out. Come on, Yeszir, get with the program.
