Then they lose the DH and the pitcher has to hit. This is with one OF ejected and one out of the game with an injury, so they have a thin bench with no backup OFs to PH with.

Gotcha. I thought DH was like any other position - I mean, the Sox could switch Pedroia to SS and Lugo to 2B for every batter whose name starts with a vowel if they wanted to, right? I didn't know DH was any different. Thanks for the info.

Once the DH takes the field, it's benefit is lost. This happened when Posada switched from DH when Molina got hurt in Fenway this April. It was late in the game and the pitcher's spot never came up in the order.
