I couldn't wait to get home so I could get here to respond. So, here it is...

First of all, I'm tired of having to explain the idea of "Red Sox Nation" to morons like Hank Steinbrenner. I'll do it again though. No one is calling the United States of America "Red Sox Nation" We hold no claims to the country, like the way the Cowboy fans all themselves "America's Team" (and doesn't that just make you want to stick a pen in your own neck?) The term "Red Sox Nation" refers to 1) There are a lot of Red Sox fans across the country, as in the fan base covers more area than most other teams, and 2)This whole collection of fans as a unit, pulling for the Sox. Is that so damn difficult to get?

Secondly, as proof of genetic anomalies that are bringing us ever closer to the end of days, I offer you Hank Steinbrenner. What a freakin' twit. Just like his dad?! But who really expected anything else? Did anyone really think that Georgie would have handed the reins to his kids unless they'd proven to be big asses like Pop? I mean, would Yankee fans settle for anything less than maniacal boorishness?

Hank also needs to figure out that 50% of the dick-weeds in those Yankee caps are people who have never seen the team play and probably couldn't name more than A-Rod and Jeter if they had a gun put to their heads. Based on that fact, the idea of Yankee fans commenting about the pink hat brigade is pretty hypocritical.

One more thing, at the risk of pointing out the obvious. Yankee fans always said that even if the Sox won another World Series that it would only get worse. The Yankees would still be their daddies and the Sox would still be their bitches. The only thing that could have saved this scenario would be going through the Yankees to get that next ring. The icing one the cake? Staging the greatest comeback in sports history while they choked in a way then no other team has ever been able to match.

Hank, talk all you want if it helps you get through the night. It doesn't matter all that much, partially because the more you talk, the more you prove my points. But also because if 100 years from now the Yankees have 60 championships, the second thing that will always be mentioned after the word "Yankees" will be "choke", followed by the details of the 2004 ALCS.

I think a lot of the older sox fans would agree that the red sox nation crap is stupid. The new ad campaign isnt aimed towards them. Its aimed at the generation of new sox fans. You must admit that it was an absolute joke that a chief justice swore in Jerry Remy as the president of RSN. That was corny and stupid.

and in order to be a "Team of a Nation" you need to have a certain reaction amongst americans. The Cowboy's are "America's Team" because those who watch football and dont love the cowboys hate them. There isnt much middle ground. Same with the Yankees. You either love em or hate em. The Sox? Tons of middle ground. That should say all that needs to be said

True, it is VERY stupid.

Hank had also ran his mouth during the offseason' date=' speaking very openly about the current negotiations. [b']It has been said that deadline given to the Twins was laughable to them.[/b] There is no doubt that Hank is flesh n blood

Who's laughing now, Bill Smith?

over/under on Smith's pending forced resignation by an angry Twins fan with access to a very large bat and Smith's schedule.

are we really going to get into semantics on this one?

It's not semantics. It's math. It's counting. It's a fact. The year 2000 is not part of this century or millenium. The Yankees have no champonships this century or this millenium. 2000 is also more than 7 years ago.

Like they really think they'll stay ahead for a long time. Remember, it was a blowout for the first quarter century of the 1900's.

The difference is that bin this century there is more money to be made from baseball than from Broadway. BTW you will have trouble being the top dog in NY never mind being WS Champs. The Mets should command most of the headlines in the Big Apple in 2008.

To tell you the truth, the real idiots in this is us debating it. Who gives a s***? So the owner of the Yankees disses the Red Sox. So what? Whatever. The news of the day should be how Lester couldn't find home plate with a compass. Or how Shelley Duncan might win the first base job, or how Igawa is a complete and utter 46 million dollar bust.

The Mets can go 162-0 and they'll still trail the Yankees on the backpage. It's unfortunate, but thats just the way it is.

As a fan of both, you'd know.

Since when is somebody only allowed to root for 1 team? Most baseball fans have secondary teams that they pull for. Being as how they too represent my home city whats the problem with rooting for them? Why do you have to always be so f***ing ignorant? If they were in the same division, or even the same league I would understand...but theyre not!

I see that I've been missing The Algonquin Round Table. Since when? Since they invented time. Most baseball fans does not translate to the long time die hards of this baseball team. We aren't "most baseball fans" The problem is that I wouldn't want to go to war with you or your ilk. Wishy and the washy. You wouldn't understand to quote your last sentence. And no. You can not have secondary teams if you have any conviction about anything of value. Of sense of self and purpose.

That really isn't fair. I'm a tried and true baseball fan. I love my Yankees. Growing up, I hated the Mets. You had to. When I was younger, you were in different camps.

As I got older, my "hatred" for the Mets waned. I had many friends who were Mets fans. You New England fans don't understand this, because your small city has only one team per sport, but New York is more fun when both teams are doing well. This is true with baseball, football, hockey, etc. The talk radios are more entertaining. There are lively debates and good natured ribbing. The subway series was amazing here. The whole city was buzzing with the World Series in 2000. It created a rivalry when there wasn't one before.

Simply put, New York is more fun when BOTH teams do well. For the old-timers, it was like rooting for the Yankees as a Giant fan when the Yankees played the Dodgers in the World Series. You know how many hard-core Jets fans were rooting for the Giants in the Superbowl over the Pats? The dynamics for a two-team city are probably beyond your comprehension.

If the Mets were in the World Series against anyone else, I'd root for the Mets. They are New York, and so am I. I follow the Mets, but the same as I follow the Royals or any other team. I'd just rather see New York win than another city. I'm a Yankee fan first and foremost, and a New Yorker second. Outside of Boston, I'd root for an AL team over an NL team. I'd root for an East team over a West team. So if the Orioles face the Padres in the World Series, I'd probably root for the Orioles.

I can't expect you guys who haven't lived in a two-team city to understand.

I think that we've given Hank the Yank (read fat pompous gelatinous ass-bag) enough of our time, energy, and angst. You can be sure that this is exactly the kind of thing he was hoping for. We now have people launching profanity at each other, and I find myself in the unfamiliar position of agreeing with GOM, not once but twice! We're just wasting our time (no one more than me with my long, windy post yesterday) arguing about this nonsense. Also, I agree with GOM in that I know people who have a "secondary team". I'm one, and my only excuse is that I don't make a conscious decision about who I feel an attachment to where sports teams are concerned. I feel what I feel. That is why I make no apologies for my fan loyalty, whether we're talking about Notre Dame, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Red Sox, or even the Phillies.

One last thing. John Henry is a freakin' genius! Hank in RSN! That is classic. I wish I could be there when the packet arrives with the card and such in it!

Good...we put this to a rest. Hopefully this is the last post of this thread.

First of all, to clarify, I don't have a second team. I just would rather the Mets win because they're New York.

Secondly, what John Henry did was absolutely brilliant, and I couldn't stop laughing. If you ask me, would I rather have had Hank shut up or this whole drama to play out....I would have chose the drama. It's just more entertainment.
