NEW YORK - Alex Rodriguez apparently could remain a New York Yankee yet.

According to a report in the New York Post on Wednesday, the Yankees are ready to reverse their position of not dealing with Rodriguez in free agency by offering the All-Star third baseman arbitration.

While it is unlikely Rodriguez would accept a one-year deal, that would be fine by the Yankees, who want to use arbitration to get something in return for the soon-to-be American League Most Valuable Player.

That is the worst headline I've ever seen. Cashman said the only reason they're offereing arbitration is to get the draft picks. If he wants to accept it, fine. But there's no way that happens. This is no shift in Yankee position. This is a non-story.

Exactly, why is this a thread? They get a number 1 pick and sandwich pick from the club that signs him...that's what they want

Olney on Mike and Mike this morning

-Who will be the Yankees opening day 3rd baseman?

Olney: ARod

-Says Boras overplayed his hand

-ARod is considering going straight to Hank and Hal to work out a deal

-Hank and Hal will only do it in a face to face meeting w/ no Boras in the the room. The deal must be done in the room and if they feel Boras is involved in anyway there wont be a deal

Buster Olney is an idiot.

There was a guy from the post on D&C this morning saying the same thing. (i think it was Joel Sherman) He said friends who aren't part of 'the boras camp' are advising arod that he needs to go back to NY....He said Arod is playing it careful because he has a lot of 'skeletons in the closet' and Boras knows all of them.

i think buster olney got ass raped in the rectory or perhaps in the bathtub by a relative but what hes saying is true.

boras overplayed his hand.

i know hes been portrayed as a genious for scoring on jd drew and so many others but he f***ed up hard here.

when you eliminate the yankees and chicago and know that boston isnt as gung ho since they won twice without him??

then you're dealing with the left coast alone

unless of course mlb gives the chicago team to mark cuban, then thats a different story

Alex Rodriguez may be headed back to the Bronx after all -- but on the Yankees' terms.

Despite all of the back-and-forth posturing between the Yankees and A-Rod' camp, the Daily News learned today that the two sides have been discussing a deal for the past few days to keep the two-time MVP in pinstripes, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The biggest catch? The Yankees don't want agent Scott Boras involved in the negotiations.

A high-ranking Yankees source told the Daily News that the team is willing to bring Rodriguez back on a below-market contract, one that would make up for the $21 million subsidy from the Rangers that the Yanks lost when A-Rod opted out of the final three years of his contract.

In addition, the Yankees don't want to deal with Boras, who has been Rodriguez's agent since the slugger was 16 years old.

"We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source said. "He cannot be in the room."

The Yankees are also aware that Boras could convince Rodriguez to stop the talks. "We realize it could be a trap to get us back in the negotiations," said one Yankee official. "But we don't think that's the case."

Rodriguez apparently approached the Yankees through a third-party intermediary. "He went to them," said the source.

As the Daily News reported today, A-Rod will have to have person-to-person talks with the Steinbrenner brothers -- Hank and Hal -- before a deal can be sealed.

According to the first source, the Yankees are waiting for Mariano Rivera to sign a new contract before finalizing any plans with Rodriguez, who is expected to take a 10-year deal worth roughly $275 million. That would be about $75 million less than Boras has been looking for, though most industry insiders believe there was never going to be a $350 million offer out there for Rodriguez.

Abraham doesn't think this s going to happen:

In theory, Alex could come to the Yankees and volunteer to eat the $21.3 million the Yankees are losing from Texas. In theory, aliens could land in Central Park as well.

But doing that would be a complete reversal for A-Rod. I find it hard to believe that he walked away from a $200 million deal from the Yankees (at least) without knowing he could get more someplace else. That the Angels have not even suggested signing him is a problem is telling. Every other team has expressed at least some reservation.

But Alex sells papers, always has. In a market where there must be a baseball story every day, he’ll be a story until he actually signs with another team.

Tough choice Alex - break-up with Boras or Jeter? A three-some is not on the table.

My feeling is A-Rod is just trying to jack-up the price.

Good Lord, who else is even coming close to this figure? Damn Yanks, same ol same ol

definetely spin btw. Boras will be "reprimanded" by ARod most likely, which probably means that he will have to wait 3 hours to collect his share of the $275 Mil rather than the customary 3 minutes. What a bunch of crock. Please don't let the Yanks sign this fraud to a $275M contract.

I would not be surprised if this was all being cooked up by the master spin doctor himself, Scott Boras. With the Yankees out of the bidding, the price is going to go down, Boras won't take the chance of looking like a fool by having A-Rod opt out and then receive less money somewhere else. They have to have the Yankees in the mix or at least give the impression that the Yankees are in the mix in order to keep the price up.

By negotiating a below-market value deal?

go figure.....

wow...interesting developments. If he does in fact come back, that would certainly solve a few issues and save us some trouble, and probably some prospects this winter. If A-Rod is going to in fact take this deal, or something similar to it I would commend him. Good s***, Alex!

It's not that difficult to figure out.

If the Yankees are willing to spend $275 million for him, having them in the bidding process makes things tougher for anyone else involved in the ARod sweepstakes.

Ergo, the price for the end contract will be higher than $275 million.

the bottom line is not only do the Yankees have the deepest pockets in baseball, but they have the biggest need for a 3rd baseman. everything else doesn't matter

No Boras would be a violation of the CBA

"That clearly is a violation of the Basic Agreement," Michael Weiner, the general counsel of the players' union, told FOXSports.com on Wednesday.

"Once a player designates an agent, a club cannot refuse to meet with that agent."

ARod is in fact negotiating with the Yankees

After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization.

Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.

As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. I also understand that I had to respond to certain Yankees concerns, and I was receptive and understanding of that situation.

Cynthia and I have since spoken directly with the Steinbrenner family. During these healthy discussions, both sides were able to share honest feelings and hopes with one another, and we expect to continue this dialogue with the Yankees over the next few days.
