Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth about $8 million in base salary and another $2 million in potential incentives, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports.

The agreement is pending Schilling, 40, passing a physical exam.

On his Web site, 38pitches.com, Schilling gave an update on the negotiations.

"Talks with the Red Sox are moving," he wrote. "[Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein] and I have spoken multiple times daily over the past week and given the current situation I am feeling very confident that we will be able to finalize a 1 year contract to allow us a chance to finish our career as members of the Red Sox organization.

"There are some things to iron out and details that must be finalized for both sides but barring something unforseen or outrageously odd happening I feel very comfortable that I will finish my career here."

Schilling, who is not represented by an agent, went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA last season. He won three games in the postseason, including Game 2 of the World Series on the way to Boston's sweep of the Colorado Rockies.

Schlling is a six-time All-Star who has been with the Red Sox for four of his 20 seasons.

The Boston Herald, which first reported that Schilling was near a deal with the Red Sox, reported that the Astros, Diamondbacks and Phillies all contacted Schilling on the first day of free agency. But Schilling posted on his Web site: "I made it clear to all three teams that my intent was to do whatever I could to resolve this and remain in Boston for the final year of my career."

In 2004, Schilling went 21-6 and helped lead the Red Sox to their first World Series title since 1918, but his velocity has since diminished.

After the Red Sox declined to give him an extension, Schilling said in February that he would become a free agent after the season. He said then he would return for Boston in 2008 for $13 million, the same salary he earned in 2007

good work Schilling as well. he showed a loyalty rarely seen in sports today cause I'm sure he could've got 3 years and $36 million somewhere else

Torre pretty much got the same kind of deal, and he was outraged, Schilling realizes what hes worth and wants to play on a contender with a solid team and he signs. Very smart move for both sides.

This is good news for the sox. They get Schilling at a cheap price, and it also shows that some guys just get it and love playing here. I am very happy about this move.

Tru dat.

Schilling is a smart guy and I think he also realized that it could pay dividends, in terms of his standing in Boston sports folklore, not to drag this thing out and look like a money grubbing athlete.

Schilling has weight clause

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

ORLANDO - Curt Schilling's new 1-year, $8 million deal will include $2 million worth of incentives if he meets weight requirements. The team hopes to insure that Schilling will be fit when he comes to spring training camp, a source close to the negotiations said moments ago.

Schilling can earn another $2 million in clauses for meeting weight limits and an additional $3 million for performance bonues.

More from the Associated Press:

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Barring any unforeseen complications, Curt Schilling will once gain be pitching in Boston when the 2008 baseball season opens. The veteran right-hander has reached preliminary agreement with the World Series champions on a one-year deal worth at least $8 million. There's an additional $5 million in bonus money that would allow him to match his 2007 salary.

The deal is subject to Schilling passing a physical.

Schilling turns 41 this month. He was 9-8 during the regular season this year, then went 3-0 in four starts during the playoffs to improve his postseason record to 11-2.

In 2004, Schilling went 21-6 and helped lead the Red Sox to their first World Series title since 1918.

Yes let's compare managers and players, especially when the player only wants a one year deal and the manager wants multiple years.

Schilling is a borderline Hall of Famer. Winning a third World Championship with the Red Sox and his 4th overall would help his candidacy. He'd have his best shot at a Championship by staying with the Red Sox.

Atleast wtih Curt being at a certain weight it'll keep him hopefully more healthy during the season. Sure is glad to know he'll finish his career and Boston. Here's to another season!

Confirmed by the Big Guy himself.

The deal looks like this.

$8 million in guaranteed base salary

$2 million in bonuses for 6 seperate weigh ins.

I inserted the weigh in clause in the 2nd round of offers, counter offers. Given the mistakes I made last winter and into Spring Training I needed to show them I recognized that, and understood the importance of it. Being overweight and out of shape are two different things. I also was completely broad sided by the fact that your body doesn’t act/react the same way as you get older. Even after being told that for the first 39 years of my life. Now I can’t get on Dougie anymore, which sucks, and I am sure the clause will add 15-100 more jokes to Tito’s Schilling joke book.

$3 million in IP incentives based on IP totals.

$1 million for receiving a Cy Young vote, any vote.

Some miscellaneous things were agreed upon as addendums as well.

the fact that it was Schilling who had the weight clause added opened my eyes a little bit. I guess he really wanted to stay here

The Hall would probably make it Boston because of the whole 2004 deal and his all around postseason domination mostly coming as a Red Sox pitcher. Regardless, the man's going to the Hall of Fame, no doubt, and whichever team he goes as, I'd just be happy to see him go. And when he does, I'm so going to Cooperstown for his induction.

I'd think so too. Schilling's legacy will be his postseason performance and the bloody sock and aside from 2001, all of that came in Boston

Schilling can honestly say he bled for his team.

I like this a lot more than just 1 year, 12 mil, no incentives (obviously). The rotation now looks like this:

1. Beckett

2. Matsuzaka

3. Schilling

4/5. 2 of: Wakefield/Lester/Buchholz/Acquisition

lol 2 mil for weight requirements

According to 38pitches (because the info in that blog's all Gospel ;) ) Schilling put that clause in during the negotiations as incentive to lay off the Ding-Dongs.

Hell, for that kind of money, I'd be able to get/stay in shape!
