Saw this; the story is this kid asked Duncan for an autograph and this is what Duncan gave him.

seeing how he's just a little kid maybe stink would have been more appropriate, but nothing really wrong with the idea of it. it's a lot better than a shelley duncan autograph all by itself for a sox fan, this at least has humor
Posted
I don't have a problem with it, I thought it was funny.....of course it would have been better to do that to an onlder kid or adult. Doing that to a young kid is a little off, but whatever

Knowing that he signed it for a kid shows a lack of maturity. If he signed it for an adult it would be a different story. Is he trying to impress a 10 year old with sarcasm? It's obvious Duncan is deficient in intelligence and professionalism.

I could go either way but I think you have to consider that he signed it for a kid. If he signed it for an adult it's one thing... for a kid... I don't know. I know it was all in good fun but chastising a kid for cheering for a team when he asks for an autograph... I dunno. I laughed, I'll say that much.

Thats good stuff, I wouldn't expect anything else, or would want anything else. You can get any old autograph, but that one is different and funny, thats way better then just a signature:D

So most of you are totally cool with it? I'm surprised.

I have two boys that play and are huge Sox fans. If my 12 yr old asked for an autograph and got that piece of sh*t from a player he'd be pretty upset. Unlike me, he stills thinks pro-athletes are pretty awesome.

Assuming the story is true and Duncan knowingly did this for a 10 yr old kid, I'd call it poor judgement. I'm not gonna blast Duncan, I don't know him, and maybe he's a great guy...but I firmly believe it's very poor judgement and quite disrespectful to treat a kid this way, just to get a laugh.

Again, all this is assuming the story is on the up and up.

And all the vulgur T-shirts and chants at Fenway are ok? If the parent is so concerned with keeping the kid in a bubble, he shouldn't be at a Yankees-Red Sox game.

Shelly Duncan's signature is awesome. My 11 year old brother would love it if David Ortiz signed an autograph like that for him. It's a rivalry, its fun. Some people just need to lighten up and enjoy it.

That picture is my new background.

Vulgar chants? Other than "Yankees Suck"?

I think it was a fairly dumb jock's idea of being funny that was not met well. He shouldn't have done that though. Why a kid would want Shelly Duncan's autograph is beyond me. That would require looking at his face, which is an unpleasant act in and of itself.

As for whining about "Yankees suck" cheers, I think anyone who has a sig that screams "F ONE OF MY OWN TEAM'S PLAYERS" has forfeited all credibility on the subject of vulgarity.

I don't think anyone has said they're really upset with the whole thing, just pointing out it was a classless move, so no "lightening up" is nexessary. Couple of thoughts:

(1) Are you seriously comparing the actions of a MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYER and how he treated, directly, a KID seeking an autograph...to the actions of a bunch of drunk a-hole fans who wear vulgar shirts? No comparison.

(2) We're not debating the kid's reaction to it...and maybe the kid was fine with it. What I raised was that the act in and of itself...pulling crap on a 10 year old...shows a lack of thought and lack of class.

Let me ask you this...would Jeter have done this? If not, why do you think he wouldn't? Again, not a big deal, but to defend him is ridiculous. BTW, you'd think a guy with only 58 ABs this year, none against the Sox, and who is not even a blip on the radar screen of this rivalry would be humble and respectful.

i distinctly heard a "f*ck the yankees" chant in the 9th
I don't like the vulgar chants either. I am old enough to remember when the Yankee fans, yes the Yankee Fans, started with the "Boston Sucks" chant and tee-shirts. Many thought that was vulgar at the time, but "sucks" became part of accepted vernacular in our culture. I guess that at some point in the future we will be hearing "f***" during prime time on the major networks and no one will care.

Rician, your comment reminds of when KARIM GARCIA got involved in the 2003 fracas and jumped the security guard. All the names who've been involved in that rivalry over the years, including those on the field, and KARIM GARCIA thinks he can go around starting crap?

Great call...in fact I was typing in a Karim reference in that last post then decided to keep it shorter...but you are exactly right. Some players just get caught up in it, before they're really a bona fide part of the rivalry.

700...I agree. I can't stand that crap, from either fan base.

The Sox fans "Yankees suck" chant pisses me off...it's like "guys, they've owned us for like...ever...and you're saying THEY suck?" Wise up.

Similarly, stuff like the Yankees "Why are you gay" chant and their other antics are bogus too. I mean you attend a game to pull that sh*t on some fan of another team? That's what it takes for you to enjoy the game?

At my gym, this huge guy, a Sox fan, who is a corrections officer, wore a "Jeter sucks, ARod swallows" shirt to the gym. He told me he wears it to the Bronx...and no one messes with him because he and his buddies will kick their ass...classy, huh?

Then there's the time I was less than 10 yrs old at a Sox-Yanks game in the Bronx, and the Red Sox scored and a Sox fan in the row in front of us stood up and cheered...and got drenched with beer from someone a few rows back...equally classless.

Those are not true fans...unfortunately there are way too many of them on either side.

The guy from the gym may be sorry some day. I had a friend from Brooklyn-- a real street guy. I am from Brooklyn, and I can tell you that this guy was tough. I never found out what he did for a living, but I know that it was on the wrong side of the law. He made the mistake of going to a NY Rangers- Islanders game at MSG in an Islanders Jersey. He was sitting in the blue seats with his friend, a Rangers fan and season ticket holder. He was told to take off the Jersey if he wanted to stay. He told them that he would not take off the Jersey and that they would have to take it off him. Well...they did. He got a good beat down and was thrown down a flight of stairs shirtless, and to add insult to injury he got was removed by security along with his Ranger fan friend who also got two black eyes. This gym guy may be tough, but there is always a tougher guy(s) out there waiting for you.

the night the sox beat cleveland 23-? in the 99 playoff series we were sitting in the right field bleachers when a yankee fan staggered up the stairs babbling some nonsensical ********

the guy behind me threw a plastic bottle of coke at him and missed by 10 feet and hit a woman in the head, the womans boyfriend stood up just in time to catch the yankee fan as he fell backwards after getting hit with a beer...security came and dragged the bleeding yankee fan down the stairs with his face hitting each concrete step

by the time he got to the tunnel he was bleeding from every orifice in his face, including a couple of new ones that were gouged out by the woman who got her shots in as well.

youre just asking for trouble when you flaunt this s*** in front of 30-40-50,000 other fans

ideally' date=' the kid would've turned around and said "thanks, Bubba Crosby"[/quote']

I have Mets tickets, and while it's not the same level of animosity, the Septic Tank fans do the same thing at Shea. They show up all decked out in NYY gear and parade around begging for trouble.

I think it's funny. If you think in today's day and age that a 10 year old would be disillusioned, You got another think coming. I agree with ARod here, if you want to keep your kid in a bubble, don't bring him to a Sox-Yankee game. You think that kid is being quiet when the Fenway faithful are chanting "Yankees suck"?

Get real. It's hysterical, and if I had an autograph from Ortiz saying Yankees suck, I'd put it up on my wall.

Don't lose sight of the fact that where most athletes don't sign anything, and charge you if they do, Shelley took the time to stop and sign. Sadly, that in itself, should be commended. In the past, that was the norm.
