So, to recap:

Manny misses time last year due to a strained oblique, for a month, and no one says a damn thing.

Drew plays all year with a herniated disc in his back, misses four games, and is the Anti-Christ.

anti-christ? I don't think anyone has come on that strong. The bulk of what I've read (and said) here centers around Drew's inability to stay on the field during his career and whether it's exagerrated or not. It's Drew's injury history, not this particular injury, that he's taking a little heat for.

I know the AL has the DH and that's got to help a players games played, but Manny has 6 season of 150+ games played, Drew has zero.

Since his first full season through the year when he was 33 Manny averaged 143 games played. Drew, from his first full season through last year (at age 31) averaged approx. 121 games played.

Manny is 36, Drew is still only 32 still Manny has not been nearly as impacted by injury as Drew. I'd expect him to start feeling his age...at least more so than I would a 32 year old.

I've said before, I'm ok with a Drew who gets on the field 140 times per year. But it sure seems like it takes a lot of work to get to that number. Just saying.

But no one said a goddamned thing when Manny missed a month last season after missing a month the season before.

Drew has been playing with a herniated disc all season, and as soon as he misses FOUR GAMES people begin chirping he's fragile.

It's a complete joke.

Dude, you've been anti-Drew since he started playing here.

Not sure I get where you're coming from exactly. If someone says he's fragile, I think that's a fair opinion...he has missed a lot of time during his career due to nagging injuries. I stated earlier that I wasn't sure if that label really applied to him, although he had some low games played numbers earlier on and seems to require some care to stay healthy. When this most recent report about a disc problem came out, I commented that perhaps another poster was right in labelling him fragile...still I did not call him fragile or pussy or anything.

If you are upset that even though he's been playing through pain he is not getting the respect that playing through an injury deserves, then you have a valid point. If he has had this thing all year, then I tip my cap to him and appreciate his efforts.

I'll say it once agin. I like Drew. I like what he brings to the team. I think he approaches the game as a professional. I'm ok with him playing 140 games per year. While I hope he remains healthy enough to hit that level of games year in and year out, historically I think there is some reason for concern given he's averaged 120 games a year through last year.

I really don't think we're that far apart on Drew, to be honest.

I think that's quite an overstatement, especially given that within the last few days I've said "I like Drew" and "I like what he brings to the team" and "I'm ok with him playing 140 games per season."

The point I've made here is that he has a history of missing games due to injury. Look at his games played numbers...he ain't cal Ripken. Why does stating the obvious bother some people here so much, especially when I predicate my statement by saying "I LIKE HIM?"

Now I will admit, when he came on board one thing that got my attention was he was SO even-keeled, it looked like he didn't care. The more I watched him , the more I realized it was just his demeanor and I started to view him differently. I've also stated I never expected huge things out of him , based on his historical performance....and that means both performance stats and games played. He is what he is, and I'm happy to have him on the Sox...but I still think keeping him on the field is a valid concern.

This. I think the Drew "fragile" label is thrown around way too much and is in most cases done by people who have an irrational bias towards Drew just because Tony LaRussa said some disparaging things about him.

I don't think we're way off myself.

Notice something here. The sox said that Drew would be back in a day or two and he's been out a week. They didnt really reveal the extent of Lowells hip injury and the oblique may have been a blessing. They downplayed DiceK's injury and he was out 3+ weeks. They downplayed Beckett and he could be hitting the DL. If Francona addresses anything with, "well it looks like its gonna be a day or two, its nothing serious", then bank on a DL stint. What Drew has, even a tough, hardnosed player would have trouble playing through. This is JD. I'd be shocked if he doesnt hit the DL with this

I tend to agree, but it was reported on BBTN today that Drew's back was feeling better (meaning I expect him to play in the Yanks series) and Beckett is slated to pitch Friday.

In this instance, I give Tito a pass for not DLing one or both but he does have the tendency to do this.

Beckett may be slated to throw Friday, but he hasnt had a problem free throwing session since the incident. Is he going for an MRI? Irritation around the ulnar nerve is nothing new for a pitcher. Sometimes it is a predictor of things to come. Some players need nerve transposition surgery and others have tears in their UCL, which causes inflammation, and the first sign is an ulnar neuropraxia. But the majority of these are self limited.

JD Drew not healing nicely is the title. Looks like he may hit the DL. I cannot imagine a team being allowed to be so hamstrung at a critical point in the season. Casey strained his neck and may or may not be available come game time Tuesday. Drew has been out for over a week now and may end up being DL'd. Funny thing is, if he gets DL'd he'd be eligible for activation on Sept 2nd, which is only 8 days from today. And Beckett has been pushed back a few times too. If he hit the DL, he'd be eligible Sept 1st. Why do the sox continue to let themselves be hamstrung. They are playing with 22 men on the active roster, and if Jacoby needs a day or two to clear the cobwebs (and the imprint of the chain fence from his face) then who do they turn to?

herniated disks bum quads gimpy hammys tender brittle bones

does it matter?

if his disk is really herniated hes done for the year,if its something else then its a day to day issue which maybe worse for both the sox and the player..

the guy has always had issues staying on the field and this isnt a mystery or a surprise.

hes either snake bitten or is a complete pussy but in any case the bottom line is we cant count on this guy being productive or even helpfull down the stretch and thats that.

no tony larussa comments mean s*** to me

trot nixon was the tuffest sonofabitch on that club and hed be gone 6 weeks on a swing and miss,he missed 4 months getting hurt while driving to spring training for christsakes.

anyways

he carried us in june hitting in front of ramirez

hes done essentually nothing since

im neither surprised or pleased at this moment and the timing just sucks.

time to move onto ny and lets do with what we got,we have no choice

Got Pepto?

Im bored stiff but not as stiff as this guy

anyone seen him around lately or is Hood Milk about to put his picture on the back of their cartons.

15 games to go.

hes hit .209 since the break so perhaps its a blessing that coco crisp is out there.

we got 3 more years of this...a mere 45,000,000.00

who wouldve thunk that Jed Lowrie would be a more pivotal player in October than the All Star game mvp??

Posted

In October I put this guy in the lineup all day in favor of Ellsbury and let Ellsbury run the bases late when you need it, or in a pivotal situation.

I believe truly great pinch runners are underrated in the playoffs, specifically by us AL watchers who don't have to be subject to small ball all the time.

Not to mention Ellsbury is hitting for s*** with no pop and no walks, so it really doesn't make sense except for his defense.

How is he going to play when he is in the bathtub,on the massage table or at the chiropractor?

but i wont argue the concept.

They've certainly learned how to get the Jake out this year havent they,he has been somewhat of a disappointment after a great run last fall and a hot start this spring.

I hope he dont get Cabrerra'd next year

do you know what i do for a part time income Kilo?

I smell a rat here and I dont know if hes playing or not but when strange men offer to wager with me on a subject like this I tend to feel the point of a dick headed into my colon..

I'll pass

but to be a sport...

I'll buy you 10.00 worth of chicken wings or beer or whatever your fancy is when we eventually hook up for a game or a knife fight or a day at the beach if he does play, today,September 12th 2008...He has to make the box score or this is void....

We need some lefty muscle this weekend and we need it bad.

Now if you're a gambler I could use some advise on the Kansas SFlorida game ce soir.

USF is -3.5

i think the line is

Tomorrow night i see USC laying some a old fashioned ass whoopin on the buckeyes laying 11.

an indication of how f***ing putrid the acc is this year should be the total in this game.

Has anyone ever seen a 27 pt total in what would be a huge football game in years past?

27,both teams?

And BC cant beat these guys? They shouldve beaten gtech like a drum

Its painfull, not as painfull as shelling out 2k for pats seasons but painfull nonetheless
