Nice' date=' I really wasn't expecting much but Carter is one of the better 1B prospects in baseball.[/quote']

one of the better offensive prospects in the game. He is a butcher on D, but he has some serious power potential. Like a lefty version of Wily Mo who is a bit more advanced in approach.

I'm assuming he can handle a scoop, right? He may not have the range or make the stellar play, but if he's an absolute masher that can just get the job done defensively, I like it.

Like rdsxmbnt, I was going to feel great if they could have gotten a bubble gum machine for Pena. The fact that they were able to nab Carter makes me pretty elated.

Just a solid pickup. According to Sean MacAdams, good possibility of him joining the team in September if acquired before then

Carter's stats

125 games- 163 for 499 (.327 avg) (.386 obp) (.525 slg) (.911 ops) 39 Doubles, 3 Triples, 18 HRs, 84 RBIs, 74 Runs, 50 Walks, 67 Ks, 2 SBs

If this is what I think it is then I had the exact same thought when I read the title

quite simply a bad joke on my part referencing the hall of fame receiver

getting someone of substance makes me feel better about losing WMP, but this guy's a mediocre prospect.

He's a 24 year old first baseman with poor defense and a .521 slugging percentage in a hitters' park.

He's decent, and in general not a terrible return for Pena, but don't get too excited about this kid.

Pena was getting s*** for ABs this year, and s*** for ABs next year with an outfield of Manny, Crisp or most likely Ellsbury, and Drew. For the better of the team in need of a true bench player, and for the better of the player, it was the right move to send him to Washington. Im happy for him, he's finally getting the starting gig

With the exception of an oustanding May, Youkilis has struggled for the enitre year.

If Youk can't get it togeather before the end of the month, I think you need to give Carter some ABs at 1B, defensive butcher or not.

I live in Tucson and have seen Carter play numerous times. He is an above hitter but a very lousy fielder. Playing in Tucson with the altitude and a hitters ball park does help the offensive numbers.

I would think he has a shot at making the ball club next year if Lowell is gone.

Id say he still has a damn good shot with Hinske a free agent at season's end, backup or not his bat would be welcome

Funny how this all works out...I mean Arroyo hasn't been stellar this year, but would anyone have ever traded him for Chris Carter?

As it turns out that's what we have to show for that move now, outside of the memories of WMP's K's and defensive blunders.

You can work on fielding. This is a guy who, at only 24 years old, has two AAA seasons (nearly) under his belt where he finished around .900 OPS. He is consistently near .400 in OBP and appears to have some pop, with almost 20HR and nearly 100 RBI in both of those seasons. I certainly don't think it is unreasonable to expect this kid to contribute to the big club at some point, as his AAA seasons are reminescent of Tino Martinez's AAA seasons.

He's got similar raw numbers to Tino, but Martinez did it at a year younger (22 and 23 as opposed to 23 and 24) and I don't know anything about Calgary back then-- but Tuscon is a hitters park, and the PCL in general is more favorable to hitters.

Don't get me wrong, this is a decent return on Wily Mo Pena, but don't expect this guy to be the next superstar.

tell that to Josh Phelps. Fielding is important at 1b, I have seen it cost us a few games this yr. At the same time, if this kid can hit like this at the major league level, he'll help more on O than he would hurt on D.

I'm pretty sure he was making fun of Scaffolds.

Actually I wasn't. Youkilis seems to be mired in a long slump as the past three months have been awful and his OPS has plumetted. Most of his OPS was driven by a great May.

The goal is to win the World Series, and if Youkilis keeps slumping they need to start trying someone else there in September at least against some right handed pitchers.

I think this is why the sox may have insisted on Carter. Carter adds a dimension as a lefty 1b who has a power stroke. You turn 1b into a platoon late in the yr and you may add both a youth infusion (which could be a major virtue or a vice) and a powerful lefty bat against tough righties.

I think you're right, and I also think that you're right about the defense vs. offense thing above. Youkilis has turned into an excellent defensive 1B, and with a full winter of working on 1B I don't see why Carter can't get better. There are some guys out there who play 1B who are pretty bad offensively. If he hits he'll be worth it.

This is about the best pickup we could have realistically hoped for from WMP, especially given that we couldn't wait to get him out of here. Even if Carter never sticks with the big club, he can hold down 1B at Pawtucket until Bates or Anderson is ready to make the leap. Good work by Theo on this one.
