After the 6/22 performance.....

Holy s***, the guy is just filthy. I am glad we have the best closer in baseball pitching on our side. He is just absolutely filthy. Fastball 88-96 with good location, and 2 absolutely filthy Mr. Splits. After every swing and miss, or every painted strike on the outside black I sit there and think....OMG they had no effin chance. I cant think of another time I felt this way about a closer in Boston. Flash had his run, but not this kind of dominance.

Thoughts?

He doesn't look as sharp as he did last year, not as spot on with his 4 seam, but he's still nasty as all holy hell.

I agree with you that he hasn't been as sharp with his command, but he's been doing a new shoulder strengthening program and is a year older. I don't remember him hitting 97 last year. I remember him sitting 94-95 consistently. We have seen him at that speed when he gets used a lot, but when he has nice breaks he comes in throwing 97 and I think he's just that much harder to hit.

He must be one intimidating man to face on the mound.

I love his face as he's getting into form on the mound. Cheeks puffed out and killer like eyes. He's a nasty pitcher and the greatest closer I've seen in a while.

He's not being used as much this year, this is probably why hes not as sharp. But he still dominates.

I love how he brings up the salary, like he's earning so much less than Papelbon who is actually earning $425,000 this season

Saito has good numbers, but hes not int he class of Paps. saito has maybe 1-2 yrs of good baseball in him. If Paps stays healthy, he has many more seasons as a top shelf closer ahead of him. this alone makes him more valuable.

The 88=90 mph fastballs are actually bad splitters. My friend has a sweet HD TV and Tivo so we've rewound and froze it at his grip and theyre almost always bad splitters that don't bite. Still though, its a change of speeds because he throws so hard and he doesn't pay for it because everything he throws has lateral movement.

Sammy is having a better year. Not bad for a 37 yo $1mill a season guy from Japan.

Any knowledgeable person in baseball takes Papelbon over Saito. In fact, I read recently in a colum that polled GMs around baseball to name players they would start a team with.....and #5 on that list was a closer. Thats right....a closer, Jonathan Papelbon. I am almost certain Saitos name didnt even kicked around. (BTW A-Rod was #1, not much of a surprise there).

If the article that I think you are talking about was in the most recent SI on page 86..Papelbon was actually #4 in total points and Jose Reyes came in first for which player a team would be built around. Also, suggesting that Saito is better than Papelbon is ridiculous.

A-rod? That is kind of a surprise, you'd think Miguel Cabrera or Wright would be higher up on that list as 3rd basemen given their age. I'd take King Felix, myself.

I think you may be right about Reyes now that I think of it. Anyhow, just shows you how much people value him. Not as a closer, but as one of the best pitchers in the game. Ridiculous for a closer to be voted #4, but if any closer is worth it, its paps.

That comparison that guy made between Saito and Papelbon made me choke.

Honestly why do we care? This is a thread about Papelbon. Do you really think any of us actually care about the Dodgers what so ever?

Edit- I'll take the 26 year old making 350,000 every time.

Someone said Paps is the "best closer in baseball."

At the moment, he's no better than Saito.

So he's a decade younger... does that make him better right now? This isn't a keeper league we're talking about, but rather who is the better closer... and Saito is better AT THE MOMENT.

true, who gives a rat's ass about Mr. Miyagi, at least in this thread.

if you really want to compare the two, factor in that Saito pitches in the NL and Papelbon pitches in the AL East
