Why wouldn't you throw a high FB there? The other thing that upset me about that inning was the first pitch to Walker. Why not use the cutter inside.

I don't get too down after losses early in the season, but this one really hurt. Two outs, no one, bottom of the order coming up, and the best reliever in the history of the game on the mound. I'm pretty much speechless.

This happens to Mo once or twice every April/May. It hurts every time though..

This one was a bit different than most. Mo will blow a few one run saves when he just gives up a few hits, but this was just weird. Two outs and no one on, the bottom the A's order coming up. The Walker hit was just a bloop, but my problem with that is, especially early in the count, I'd just like Mo to stick with his cutter inside instead of trying to paint the outside corner. The Kendall one bothered me. Mo fell behind 3-1, but against someone like Kendall, even with a three ball count, I'm usually confident Mo won't walk him. He usually rears back and just throws gas down the middle. And then I'd much rather he throw a high fastball on that 0-2 pitch than try to paint the inside corner. I realize that something like this would probably not happen in middle of the season, when Mo starts to get more consistent work. This was just really shocking, especially the way it happened.

I was too lazy to check the box score' date=' so I just read the thread. You'd be amazed how much more insight you get in the game threads than box scores.[/quote']

I was thinking the same thing when I read this post...

Little Marco Scutaro does it again to the Yankees!! I believe he has had 1 or 2 other walkoff hits facing them as well

He had a walkoff in the second game of the season last year against Scott Proctor. By the way, this loss is very similar to a game Mo blew against Cleveland in 2002. He gave up two out grand slam to Bill Selby, a utility player.

I am just curious. How many times has Mo given up 3 runs in the last 5 years?

Off the top of my head I can't think of too many. I mentioned one where he gave up a grand slam in 2002. Last year against the Nationals he allowed three runs, although I don't think the first one was earned (error on Posada). There may have been a non save situation late in 2004 when he gave up a number of runs to the Orioles. Third game of the year in 2005 against the Red Sox he gave up five, not sure how many of them were earned because A-Rod made an error that could have ended the game. This doesn't fall in the last five years, but he gave up a three run HR to Jay Payton in game 2 of the 2000 World Series (non save situation). I'm sure I'm missing some, but I can't think of any others. I don't really want to look it up (too lazy), but I'll post later if I think of any others.

Bill Mueller walkoff in 2004 was a 3 run HR, right?

edit - 2 run homer, but Mo gave up three in the inning.

Good call. Not sure how I forgot that one.

Easy. You wanted to' date=' so you did :D[/quote']

Haha, that really was quite a game though. So many different things happened. Only problem was, at least for me, it didn't end so well.

You take a lot more positives out of this game than negatives, even though I feel like I have been kicked square in the nutsack.

Pettitte was brilliant. His first inning was a bit shaky, but Derek's error led to that debachle. After that he was just straight money. He's got it again, that fire and he came back with better control and better offspeed stuff. He is gonna be tough so long as the location is there.

ARod is absolutely crushing the ball. A double and then the long sac fly that was nearly gone. He keeps getting bloody noses though, a little coke in the morning?

Proctor finally looked like Proctor. He threw hard, had the curve working and was untouchable.

So in all, aside from Mo's occasional meltdown (call him the teflon closer) which occurs every april, this was a positive game. Hate the outcome, hate how it took me from the brink of relief to the pain of defeat, but it was a good game nonetheless.

Now if the yanks can actually play a few days without having an offday, I'll be happy. 2 scheduled days off in 5 days is ridiculous.

The A's offense sucks.

Just giving you a dose of your own medicine.

I wasnt the one tossing that around. I retaliated with it when someone decided to use that for Pavano's last outing. And this is 2 teams in a row in their stadium that Pettitte has ripped.

Minnesota I'll give you, but it still isn't Clevelans/Toronto/Boston caliber offense.

The A's offense is terrible.

it is. Doesnt take away from Pettitte's outing though. You'll get your chance in his next start.

Didn't you use the same claim to criticize Matsuazka's start against the Royals?

Not right away. I said Matsuzaka dominated the royals and they had no chance.

Then Pavano dominated the Twins and someone was demeaning it with "Minny isnt a top 5 offense." So I sent it back.

There are times when you watch a game and say, wow, he is lucky he isnt facing a better lineup. And to a degee, Pavano's start was like that. Pettitte's wasnt. He would have dominated anyone today, he was that good.

There's a big difference when you face lineups with David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez as opposed to guys like Eric Chavez and Marco Scutaro...oh wait.

I agree. But you can tell when a pitcher skated by and when a pitcher was just dominant. I said in the gamecast of Pavano's last start (no pun intended, but it might be his last start, lol) that he skated by in the first three innings. He left pitches up and over the plate and against a better lineup, he has a crooked number hung on him in the first 3. After that, he was dynamite. Not the same with Pettitte. He was off in the first and they got 2 runs. But from the 2nd on, he was untouchable and vintage. No team would have hit him well.

Pettitte pitched very well yesterday. You have to play who's on your schedule. If a pitcher makes his pitches he'll beat almost anyone. The best part about Pettitte's outing yesterday was that he righted himself after clearly battling with subpar stuff earlier in the game.

Apart from saying which team sucks and which team is better, I am a Red Sox fan have been for many years now, you can never count the Yankees out. I am by no means taking up for them, but I am saying that they may start off slow, but their end is always better than their beginning.

The Sox are gonna need dominate pitching performances by the starting rotation and not to mention the "bullpen." Apart from Papelbon who has been stellar thus far, the bullpen needs to stay focused and hungry! It's going to be a great series and an even better year if the Sox can continue to do what they do at the beginning of the year!
