our rotation is very deep IMO

We have 5 starters right now with no injuries, and by august we should have 7 sufficient ML starters. We possibly can have Schill, Dice-K, Beckett, Paps, Wake, Lester, Clement. All have had good seasons and are quality starters. I dont think Clement will be ready for 07, but you never know. Also Tavarez was dominent as a starter last year [doubt that will carry over though] also if needed Pineiro [if paps is moved to BP] and Breslow could be ready by the end of the year.

our situation looks solid unless 4 of our starters take a hit, but im sure if that happened to any team they would be down and out. We have 10 potential SP now, and 5 of them IMO are quality, 1 rookie, 2 off an injury, 1 releiver/starter, and 1 decent SP off of bad season.

Should be fun to watch this season

I think this year our pitching staff with really shaped up form last year...

Schilling will hopefully be his same ol' self, Beckett has 1 yr of AL under his belt and now he knows what he needs to work on... Papelbon can hopefully be as successful in the rotation as the pen, Dice-K hopefully will be able to adjust very nicely into the Majors and Wake is heathly...

ad there's also Lester who will be ready sometime during the season if not Opening Day, he's a warrior, u never no....

this year is going to be really fun to watch with all of the new face and everything, can't wait...

well' date=' everyone talked about how deep our rotation was at this time last year too and look where we ended up by August[/quote']

True but last year we also lost guys to trades and injuries, and this year we have a bit more starting pitching than last year too...

I think we have a fine rotation too. But no thread is really complete until Jacksonianmarch chimes in, so here's what I expect Jackson to say:

"No doubt, the Sox have a strong rotation on paper. But you guys are being awfully short sighted. Schilling could be great and win 15 -18 games this year, or, as reported in another thread, he could possibly come in woefully overweight. At 40, he's getting really old and he's due for another ankle surgery. Beware.

Matsuzaka may be a terrific addition to your staff, but he is from Japan and is unproven. Until he pitches in the Majors he is no better than a #7 starter. He's also too short, much like Pedro was, and will probably have shoulder problems because he's Japanese.

Beckett could truly turn his career into that of a stud ace. But blister problems are really hard to overcome and he's just too young to learn the mental aspect of the game. And he's now going to be 27 and that's not too young anymore. If he doesn't make the jump to ace this year, he may never.

Papelbon put up pretty amazing numbers as a closer last year. But closing is not starting. As a starter you need to pitch every fifth day. It's not as easy to make the switch from the bullpen to the rotation. Plus shoulder problems are really hard to come back from. Once I had a pimple in my arm pit and it didn't go away for 18 months.

Wakefield is just too old and considering he broke a rib last year, expect him to break 5 on the other side this year. Broken ribs are really hard to come back from and they just lead to more broken ribs in the future.

Lester should be in rehab until he's 30. I don't see the need to rush him back before then. If you rush him back too soon he'll get cancer all over again.

here is what I say. The sox have NO depth to their rotation. Depth to me infers that you could lose a guy or two for an extended period of time and be able to get by. After the sox top 5, you have some pretty poor options in Gabbard, Pauley, and a recovering Lester. Your team may end up with the best top 4 pitchers in any rotation in baseball, but you dont have rotation depth.

...and you still have a dick in your mouth.

The Sox better have a three run lead going into every 6th inning. I think I could make their bullpen.

A good point...but when you found out last year that a rookie with no/limited closing experience was going to be handling the 9th innings for the Sox, did you think he was going to able to put together a 35 save season with an ERA sub 1? Of course not...

I'm not saying another Papelbon is going to come from this crop...all I'm saying is you don't neccessarily have to have a big name in order to step up.

You don't have to be a big name to step up. Look at the 2002 version of Francisco Rodriguez. But you can't say that the Sox have the best rotation in baseball if they have a lot of question marks, which is what some of us are trying to say.

But what rotation doesnt have question marks? Right now all we have to go on is potential. We havent seen any of them pitch, we don't know what theyve done this offseason etc. Potential is all we can rate. And based on potential and only potential we have the best rotation.
