Do you think he'll be a good pitcher? His ERA is good, for the Japanese League, but he's never played MLB before. What do you think he'll do this year? I think he won't be as good as expected, seeing it's his first time there. But 2008 should be his breakout year.

Even if he is only league average, if you're just talking annual salary, we got him very very cheap. I'd expect a mid-3 ERA and 15 or so wins this first year. I also think he'll trend up.

we all know he's a great pitcher in Japan, the thing everyone wants to know is if he can pitch the same in the US than he did overseas... which we will soon find out...

Professional hitters in Japan and in the WBC and in the US-Japan All-Star Series have all struggled to hit Matsuzaka. He will be a top 10 starter in the AL over the duration of his career.

I was reading uponthemonster and they said something like the Japanese hitters have excellent patience and ability to foul balls off, so high K rates over there are not deceiving. Then I hear others say that the japanese leagues are hack and slash type leagues. I dont know who to believe. Settle this s*** on the field.

as far as im concerned, the sox keep pulling money out their ass so i have no idea how much they have or whats left, so it could be worth it if there is still money in the bank

6yrs 52 is pretty cheap. 6yrs 103 on the other hand' date=' is a TON of bank. Time will tell if he is worth that.[/quote']

But....since only $52 go towards payroll...

The other $51 could have been used for new seats or something. It's just an investment made by JWH.

the 51 mil posting fee is a wash considering the revenue streams the signing opened up so therefore 52 mil over 6 years makes it a great investment considering today's market

If it were to come down to Zito vs Matsuzaka its not much of an option. With Zito you know what youre going to get, with Mats theres going to be some excitement/ulcers.

keep telling yourself that
I don't care what he costs. We've got him now. The Red Sox franchise is a billion dollar enterprise. I'm not worried about them getting hamstrung by this contract and having it affect their ability to put out a competitive team.

that was their company line last yr at the break. They'll trot that line out again at some point, but now it lacks merit.

I never believed the "we can't be the Yankees" excuse. It was just an excuse to save money and put out an inferior product. I agree that they will try that excuse again some time in the future, but not for a couple of years, because another third place finish while falling from contention in early August would be very damaging to the franchise. When they trot out that excuse it will have as much merit as it did in all the past years when they cried the financial blues. It will be a lie and a deception, But no doubt that a good portion of the suckers in the Nation will buy it hook line and sinker.

Man, I like your posts more and more. That is a solid post. I would assume that this board is light on the suckers part, I feel that this one has some with it people on it, even if there are a lot of green ones.

I will never believe the poor mouthing our FO puts out there, of course all the pink hat wearing yuppies will because they have actually no idea of how our team works.

They knew they where in it deep last year and was not getting out of it during the rest of the 06 season.

Theo had no interest in Abreau, but had to say something for those stupid fans who don´t realize what the bigger picture is for the team, so they ran the where no the NYY linbe out there and the dumass´s out there bought it like you guys said.

Besides its good strategy to poor mouth, then your rivals dont expect you to be in on certain players and then bam you make a big splash on Matsuzaka that was not expected, then add Lugo, Drew and Possibly Helton and everyone is left standing there with puzzled look on the faces saying `I thought they didn´t have money?

Posted
they had no interest in Abreu yet wanted Drew? That makes no sense. I think Theo called the yr a mulligan once the pitching went in the tank. The yankees had a young 1st rounder to send the other way in Henry. The sox had young first rounders who they valued, so they held pat. But not wanting Abreu on a short term deal in lieu of Drew on a long term deal is dumb.

Maybe the Red Sox knew somehow that Drew was going to opt out of his contract? That way they knew that they could get him during FA for $$$ instead of giving anyone up. Besides, I bet they thought that they could get Drew for cheaper than they did, as they had no idea the market was going to blow up like it did. Circumstances were completely different then. We also had the problem of trying to fit Nixon and WMP in at the same time in right field. We would have had 3 RFs at the time if we traded for Abreu. Now that Nixon's gone it was easier to sign Drew.

That being said, I was in favor of trading for Abreu. I saw it as another move that our FO failed to make to insure our team would withstand the season.

That and 60% of the starting rotation went down.

Posted
I didn't say that not making those moves was the only thing that kept our season from dwindling down the drain. At the deadline, that 60% was healthy, and the FO still should have made moves. I realize the fact that 60% of the starting rotation went down, and I know that's a big part of why our season had a suck ass ending. I wasn't talking about reasons that our season failed. I was talking about the trade deadline, and my reactions to it from a Red Sox fan's perspective.

Last yr was a wash. Injuries, pitching woes, weak lineup, players under achieving, I think the FO knew once the wheels started to come off that they had a very small chance of holding onto the AL East without emptying the farm system. They pleaded poverty and all that crap, but I think without saying it directly wanted to save there money and players and have a clean slate in 07.
Posted
But by then it was too late to do anything of consequence. The injury excuse like you said they could not use anymore, so they used the poverty, they had to come up with something because I have the feeling the FO had already started plaining for 07 at that point. They obviously had to say something to the fans to make them think they where concerned about the season when the really weren't.
Posted
Yankees had injury woes also. Practically every team does every year.

Again, the Yankees did not lose 60% of their starting rotation.
