I will cut and paste the article shortly. From what I know, the most common malignant primary brain tumor is a GBM (glioblatoma multiforme, thanks wikipedia!). Apparently it is the most rapidly growing tumor in the entire body and most of the time, once someone is diagnosed with a GBM, they are one year away or less from death. This is sad.

Bobby Murcer

The news on Bobby Murcer, who underwent surgery last week for a brain tumor, is grave, the Daily News has learned. The Yankees slugger, 60, is facing the fight of his life after tests revealed the tumor was malignant and, although it was completely removed, the surgery apparently was unable to contain other invasive cancer cells, according to a person close to the family.

Murcer, who had the surgery at Houston's renowned cancer center, MD Anderson Hospital, is scheduled to undergo six weeks of extensive chemotherapy and radiation.

In a statement released through the Yankees, Murcer said:

"As we begin a new year, I find myself facing a new challenge — the biggest of my life so far. Pathology reports have revealed that the brain tumor removed was malignant.

"I'm not having to battle this alone, but am fortified with the most loving family, an abundance of wonderful friends and fans and the very best class of physicians.

"I'm gaining confidence that with God and my faith leading the way, we will as a team put up an incredible fight. Please continue to send up prayers. That's all I can really ask of you at this time."

Murcer is a Yankee institution as a player and a broadcaster for 40 years.

"Bobby Murcer represents the spirit of the Yankees, and above all, he's my dear friend," George Steinbrenner said in a statement. "I know Bobby very well. He has true grit, is a fighter and our entire Yankee organization offers our prayers to him and his family for a big win in this battle."

wow damn, that is f***ed up! I didnt realize Fast Freddie photo shopped a brain tumor into the picture of Murcer. I am literally sick to my stomach. Please ban this piece of s***, thats not something at all to poke fun about

Yeah, he was banned yesterday. I was pretty disappointed in the ******* when I realized what was photoshopped on the picture. I just didn't even want to respond, it was a waste of breath in my point of view. The piece of s*** is helpless, along with the rest of the Dodger Blue class A f*** ups.

Sounds like what my grandmother had when my mom was 8. The cancer cells are basically liquid and leak down into the brain itself, so there's really nothing to do. Back then the doctors didn't know what it was, and just said she was crazy or on drugs, and didn't diagnose the tumor until it was way too late.

The father of one of my teachers in high school died of the same thing, and apparently brain surgery has not advanced that much in the last 40 years.

Really, really sad. Those hit home for me.

Thank you Red Sox fans for taking the high road and banning that person. Although I am part of the team that is your sworn enemies, it is nice to see that you can separate baseball from everyday life. Not everyone has the overall decency your board has.

Thank you.

Your team still sucks though.

I like Murcer. I started the earlier thread about his illness, but whether you like a guy or hate him, that type of behavior is just not acceptable and should never be tolerated.

For what its worth, my sister has GBM currently. In April it will have been 3 years, which is remarkable for GBM patients. They are coming out with new medicines and treatments for it all the time, although it is very difficult to treat and the treatments themselves destroy the body. It is a horrible horrible disease. My heart goes out to the Murcer family.

God Bless your sister Ex; I'm heading for Mass in five minutes and will be sure to say a prayer for her. Sorry some no goodnick had to make fun of a person who has the same disease your sister has. Then again, what a pleasure to be on a website with such a great group of classy people. I will keep her in my prayers and my heart goes out to you.

Thanks guys, but I'm at peace with the situation. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. This shouldn't become about me and my family though.

Again, thanks.

Great news. Bobby Murcer says he's doing "fabulous" and hopes to be back in the booth for '07:

In a radio interview Tuesday, Bobby Murcer said he's doing "fabulous" in his battle against a malignant brain tumor and hopes to continue broadcasting Yankees games for the team's YES network this season.

Appearing on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio 1050 in New York, Murcer took questions from callers and said he feels "blessed" with all the support he has received.

"I'm just doing absolutely fabulous ... I haven't had any setbacks of any kind," Murcer said.

Murcer said he's leaning on his faith and has a "real sense of calm."

"Whatever will be will be. I feel that through my faith that God will heal me," Murcer said.

Murcer, who currently is undergoing treatment for the tumor, said he plans on attending Yankees spring training in Tampa, Fla., if he feels well enough to do so.

"I plan on being back in the booth and spring training if all goes well," Murcer said.

The 60-year-old Murcer had surgery in Houston on Dec. 28 to remove the tumor. It was revealed this month that the tumor was malignant.

The tumor was discovered following an MRI exam on Christmas Eve after Murcer had been having headaches and feeling a loss of energy.

Murcer played 17 seasons in the major leagues from 1965-83 and was a five-time All-Star and a Gold Glove-winning outfielder. He batted .277 with 252 home runs and 1,043 RBIs with the Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.

Murcer has won three Emmy Awards for live sports coverage as one of the voices of the Yankees.

Yes it should. You're a part of our family, buddy. Just because your sister isn't famous doesn't mean we should care.
