Well...(being a huge Sox fan) I guess i gotta say Randy Johnson, before he went to NYY... he was one of my favorite pitchers..... then he went the the yankees and I couldnt believe it cuz it was the enemy. Also, no matter how much we hate him now, Damon, he was a class act and a clubhouse hero in Boston, no matter what you say as a sox fan, u miss him... of ocurse he's an ******* for going to the Yankees, even after he said he would never do such a thing, but for what he did in Boston, winning a Championship here, I gotta give it up for him...

This is fluff and uninteresting to me.

How infantile...but expected. In three pages, everyone has posted in a mature manner. Except for one. Guess who that is?

I don't think anyone who posted in this thread truly cares if this post is interesting to you.

For all of you who posted in a mature manner, thanks. This was a very nice and cool thread. Thank you for showing that although we all love our teams, we can also appreciate good players on our hated rivals. Thank you all.

I think you care what I think about it...

I notice my arch-enemy hasn't responded. I wonder why?

Don't ask for it if you don't want it.

Paul O'Neil....

Yeah he was a baby, but I loved his competitiveness. The guy loved the game, was emotional about the game and gave everything he had. Id say one of the most underrated players to retire in the last 20 years. If you had 9 of him on your team, you were going to be alright. You cant teach that passion for the game. I used to think Trot would one day devleop into the same player because he had the same personality but talent wise it really wasn't even close.

Andy Pettite. Hes not a perenial all-star, but he knows how to pitch, and he knows how to win. Hes never had a losing season. 18-6 in the postseason.

Jeter, Mo, Bernie....all exactly the same. Classy professionals. Play the game the right way, dont show up teams, theyre all business.

Darryl Strawberry. Ive always liked the guy, and have always felt bad for the struggles with personal demons. It was nice to see him have a nice year in 98. He may have not been a great hitter in terms of batting average but I think he truly would have been one of the greatest sluggers ever, and a HOF if he hadnt had his life turned upside down, He probably wouldve had a career much like Reggie Jacksons.....a HOF career.

I have a ton of respect of Mariano Rivera. There simply can't be enough said about the man, a class act and a Hall-of-Fame talent.

And I want to say Derek Jeter, I desperately want to be able to say Jeter. But I can't, and the worst part is, I know it's not Jeter's fault. I'm just so sick of the media telling me a million times each year how Derek Jeter is the greatest. I'm sick of hearing ridiculous media gushing over how he is a 'winner.' Yes, he's a winner. Yes, he's a great player who has had the prime of his career in a great organization in one of their greatest eras ever. But he is NOT the be-all, end-all of the Yankees. He is NOT winning personified. When he dove into the stands at Fenway and got his face cut. That was ONE OUT. Great play, great effort, I'm sick of hearing about it. ESPN has simply killed whatever respect I could have for Jeter, I want to respect him, but I simply can't stand what his image has become.

Of course, the other guys I respect are Mussina, Wang, Matsui and Posada. Mussina is another great class act who has always been a quality pitcher. Wang is a fantastic young talent who I can respect immensely. Matsui is such a quality guy I can't even fathom it: he apologized to the team and the fans after breaking his wrist while making an amazing diving catch. Who does that? Posada is a good catcher, and I can always respect a good catcher.

All time Id have to say I would have like to seen DiMaggio or Mantle play.

Bo, the greatest player I have ever seen is Willie Mays. The guy do it all; masterful fielder who never threw to the wrong base, a cannon of an arm, and man, could he go after a baseball. He also had tremendous power and hit for a very good average and played with an infectuous enthusiasm, and the man could run like the wind. No one like him in all the years I saw baseball and that is close to 60 now. Mantle might have been as great as Willie but injuries and a stupid lifestype hurt him immeasurably. As for Ted Williams, he has my vote. He wanted to people to say he was the greatest hitter who ever lived. To me he was.

I absolutely love David Ortiz's game. Not too crazy about him campaigning for MVP lats 2 years, but on the field, I fear him more than anyone else. I honeslty would also watch manny whereever he plays, the way the man hits, just wow.

I never root for any Yankee. I like Mo a lot, someone else pointed out how he reacted by laughing and tipping his hat when the Sox fans gave him a standing O.

I also like Matsui, scary hitter, gives it his all in left and apologized to the Yankees and fans when he broke his wrist. Total class and a great work/baseball ethic that some American/Hispanic players lack.

Crunch, seems to me way back in the BH forum...I mean WAY back...there was a user who went by the name "Thurm's Flight Trainer" to bust on the Yankee fans in retaliation for the user name "Ted's Frozen Head". He also took that name to a Yankee fan and immediately was banned.

good times, good times. I hear he's a CF now.

I can't help like Jeter. The guy is a helluva ballplayer and a money one to boot. I remember in that five game debacle last August when we had a 5-4 lead in the ninth two outs and a guy on third and Jeter up. I was screaming at the TV set for the RF to come in a few steps because Derek was going to to that way as he has done so often at Fenway. No one heard me and ball was hit there, dropped in, game tied and we lost it in the 10th. The guy is a come through player and you just have to give him his due. Mariano rates high as well. I mean, he is as good a closer as there has ever been in baseball.

I used to hate George Brett. He was the first in the line of Yankee Antichrists. Followed by Edgar Martinez and then David Ortiz.

Hell of a player though. I still laugh when I remember the pine tar game.

Probably an underlying reason why I liked him.
