Jason Schmidt has reportidly been offererd 3 years 44 mil. from the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs are looking pretty good at this point.

No they're not. I guarantee you they finish 5th this year' date=' if not 6th. And, their assets will be tied up for a long time with the Soriano deal.[/quote']

What? 5th?

With the additions of Soriano, DeRosa, and Schmidt, the Cubs can arguably be looked at as the the best team in the Central.

Don't go overboard. The Astros are not chop liver, especially if Clemens resigns, and through some miracle, the Cardinals managed to pull a World Series out of Jeff Weaver's butt.

We're taking about right now, and right now, the Cardinals do not have an overly talented ball club. Edmonds will most likely decline, as will Rolen. The bullpen will take a major hit if Wainwright is moved to the rotation.

The Astros face a retirement issue with not just Clemens, but Pettite. That would leave them with Oswalt and four ???.

The NL Central isn't that talented, the Cubs could easily win that division with 85 wins.

I'm scared of Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter is a good pitcher. I wouldn't suggest the Cardinals aren't a talented team....they may take a step back but I think the team that won in 2006 was worse than the team that played the Sox in 2004. Tony LaRussa is a damn good coach.

I like the Cubs chances if they can pull this off. A center of the lineup with Soriano-Aram-Lee will cause some damage. And if Prior-Zambrano-Schmidt stayed healthy they could be good.

The Cubs are going to give teams in the Central a run for their money. They keep on signing guys and it doesn't seem like they are going to stop either.

A one two punch of Zambrano and Schmidt is pretty nasty. With Hill, Maybe Prior and possibly another FA like Padilla or Meche that's a formatable rotation in any division. I would definatley say they would have the most talented team on paper in there division. And for Schillingisthenatural, if the Cardinals take a step back they will be under .500. They barely made the playoffs and got lucky they played a team with no experience. If the Cubs get Schmidt then I will say they are definatley a team to watch and be weary of.

Schmidt's a good pitcher, but in all honesty do the Cubs need another injury risk?

For a few years now the Cubs have been considered contenders in March because of the POTENTIAL of Prior and Wood, meanwhile Zambrano carries the staff and they're a last place team. Wood's a reliever, Prior was awful last year, and IMO the last thing they need to do is add another name to their DL.

Shouldn't they go after less risky arms? Yes it'd be nice to add Schmidt because he's one of the best FA pitchers out there, but to me it seems like they need more of a sure thing.

Schmidt's a high risk high reward type guy to me (ala Prior and Wood).

If LA doesn't get Manny then he probably will. If LA does get Manny they won't have the money for Schmidt too. Look for him to go to STL,SEA, or CHC( where after working with there pitching coach, his arm will fall off half way threw the season). CHC pitching coach is the best when it comes to ripping your arm to shreads.

schmidt is hi risk?

based on what??

i know hes 33 but he goes 200 innings a year with no trouble

his velocity dipped in late 05 but he still looked pretty good to me

of all the nl guys i feel he would make the adjustment to the american league with the least difficulty

hes a 200 inning/32 start guy religously

is he more of a risk than the japanese guy who we're about to dump 100,000,000.00 on without seeing him throw against a major league team?

i dont think so
