If Paps get moved to the rotation, that leaves us with no closer, since Foulke is a FA and Timlin is getting up there in years. I also don't think Hansen is ready yet. IMO we should do one of two things, the first being trading John Lester, David Murphy, and another prospect for Chris Ray, and Daniel Cabera, and I'm not that I'm saying Lester is awful, I just think Ray is a great closer and that's what we're going to need if Paps moves into the rotation, which is what I think he should do. The other option is Mike Gonzalez out of Pittsburgh, maybe Murphy and another prospect for him, he doesn't have a blown save all year (knock on wood) , and he has a fine K rate. JMO.

I also think that Cabera could be a fine starter someday, with some season, he can throw 100 mph, and has been dominant at times in the A.L. East. Most of his blowup starts have come against the Red Sox anyway.

Cabrera? Seriously?

I think you just ruined any chance you may have had for serious discussion.

One game. I really love it when people feel like their assinine ideas are validated by one f***ing game. With his stuff, Cabrera will dominate from time to time, but he won't be a consistent pitcher. After watching Beckett this year, I have no interest in occassional brilliance followed by a few barn burning outings.

ok trading Lester for a CL is definetly not the route to go. Signing a FA would seem logical (whos going to be available?) or we could aquire one via trade. Mike Gonzalez is an interesting option though, id look into that if I was Theo.

Pappplebon was leaving the clubhouse " noticebly limping"

per SMcadam on EEI.

:(

Limping from his vigorous stretching routines the last few days, or what? <_>

McAdam is not always right on point.

Why is this discussion taking place? Jonathon Papelbon WILL be the closer next year. How many times do Theo and Francona have to say it? Seems everybody here is either naive or skeptical. I remember when I started my Papelbon's Future thread nobody thought that it would be a good idea to keep Papelbon in the closer's role long-term. The organization may disagree.

on the money again james

lester, with his august swoon, will probably never be more valuable than he was on 7/31 at 355pm and theo on a 3 way call between houston and atlanta.

by the way

mike gonzales was already here

he went with freddy sanchez to pittsburg for sauerbrautten and suppan

He should be in the rotation after this season. Tremendous command and has the ability to be a top 5 starter in the league if he can add an off speed breaking pitch.

That is a ridiculous trade and would never happen. Cabrera is a flat out joke as a pitcher.

A joke? Take out the start against the Sox, and Cabera has been nothing short of dominant since coming back from AAA.

Yeah, i agree. Then we should trade David Ortiz for Derrick Turnblow.

not that papelbon is terrible, but i would really like to see raul ibanez in boston because he was on baseball tonights best catches of the first half. so i think hed be great. we should trade papelbon for him...

Once again with narrow thinking.

How many teams would drool at the prospect of trading for a left-hander with his kind of track record? Also, he's making $300,000. I didn't know one bad stretch made you a leper.

I think this team is trending to be worse. I don't see any of the kids helping tjis team to improve next year. We'll be losing veterans like Nixon and Loretta and replacing them with a rookie (Pedroia) and an raw talent (Pena). 2007 will be a bumpy ride unless there are some big activity in the off-season. We may need to worry about the closer if we don't get any closer in the 2007 standings.

You never see anyone under the age of 56 helping the team anyways. This team is a couple of FA acquisitions from being very very competitive. This season they lacked the pitching depth... I mean we essentially have four starters. Not very deep.

For an extended period we had 3. I don't count Lester who was rushed to the majors and can't go more than 5 inning. Are there a lot of pitchers available on the FA market ? If Moose is available, we should make a push for him. We get better and the Yankees get worse.

We had Mike Gonzalez, but Theo traded him and Freddy Sanchez for Jeff Suppan. Thanks a lot!

No WAY you move Papelbon for Ibanez. I'm actually going to pretend I didn't even read that. The kid has the stuff to be a dominant starter if they decide to not keep him as the teams closer. I'm not 100% against moving Papelbon...maybe more like 95%...but I do know you've gotta get someone lightyears ahead of Ibanez if you're going to move Paps. He's an absolute, legitimate superstar waiting to happen.

Well, I was hoping Papelbon would move to the rotation and Hansen come into the closer's role, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen with Hansen's performance. Maybe we can deal for one. I'd love to see Paps in the rotation.

 He was TOTALLY kidding.

He has to give Mike Gonzalez back to the Pirates because of Brandon Lyon. They were very wary of his MRI's.

I say that the Sox should keep Papelbon as the closer for now. He's too good to move into the rotation.I don't see anyone who the Sox have that can close games out like he can.
