Why would we want this guy? We need pitching. He's got a huge contract-- something like 5.6 million next year. If you were going to take a salary dump, I would have rather spent 3 times as much to get a guy that can play like Abreu, not a piece of garbage like Hinske. This is a position player that is the equivalent of the jason Johnson acquisition. We just picked up someone else's garbage. And we got Carlos Pena too???? :wtf:

Its pretty simple why the Blue Jays traded him:

Eric Hinske inf

5 years/$14.75M (2003-07)

signed extension 3/03

$0.5M signing bonus

03:$0.5M, 04:$0.8M, 05:$3M, 06:$4.325M, 07:$5.626M

ML service: 4.000

Pure salery dump. It makes you wonder about Trot Nixon. He must be pretty far away from returning.

None of us wanted Shea H when he became available, but he is a much better hitter than the one year ROY wonder, Hinske. Cripes! If you are going to waste money, they should've gotten Lieber yesterday and started him on Friday instead of the "Ultimate Loser." This FO doesn't have a plan or a direction. Maybe Steve Avery is available.

RH: Manny Ramirez, Mark Loretta, Kevin Youkilis, Willy Mo Pena, Javy Lopez, Alex Gonzalez, Gabe Kapler, Doug Mirabelli, Mike Lowell

LH: Alex Cora, David Ortiz, Trot Nixon

SH: Coco Crisp, Jason Varitek

Clearly it is needed...there was a time both Eric Hinske and Carlos Pena were thought of very highly. Perhaps they can get there career back on track with a decent team in a hitters ballpark.

I was thinking the same about Trot. Plus the Sox are sorely lacking in LH bats on the bench.

They can't bring them both up. Who would get cut? They can't cut or send down two pitchers? Breslow is history, but I thought Foulke would replace him. Which pitcher gets DFA'd? Snyder? I guess they might wait until the rosters are expanded to call up Carlos Pena.

Absolutly, I would expect Pena to come up in September. Eric Hinske will probably join the team right away. We only have three players on our bench as it is. Hinske can play the outfield, 1st, and 3rd. I'm sure Francona can find a way to use him and find the right matchups.

Another September callup I'm excited to see....Dustin Pedroia. He is 7 for his last 8 I believe.

So, who gets DFA'd... Snyder?

As far as roster moves I’d say Foulke replaces Breslow for sure. To work Hinske on the roster it seems they have to move a pitcher. There are 13 now. I’d rather see them DFA Seanez or even option Snyder back to Pawtucket.

Pure salery dump.

From this report it doesn’t look like the Sox will be as burdened to pay all of the money coming to him for 2007.

Hinske had about $1 million left on his deal for this season and is to make $5.6 million in 2007. The Blue Jays will be responsible for the remainder of his salary this year but the clubs have agreed to split Hinske's 2007 salary to make the deal more palatable.

Whoah haha, this is what happens when I go out on night shift. Jaw-droppiing needless to say when I saw this in the new posts section. At least we dont have to worry about him against us, he has been a Red Sox killer

EDIT: With Hinske, a left handed hitter & signed thru 07, I believe the Sox are starting to distance themselves even more from re-signing Trot. Also its been reported that Trot's infection has set back his return to early september.

I'd feel much better if they had landed a lefty reliever heading into this series with NY. Schoenweis was dealt to the Reds. Why not try to get him?

They are sold that Foulke could become their right-handed lefty specialist

No John Olerud signing?

Is Dante Bichette available?

Butch Huskey?

Talk about throwing s*** at the wall and seeing what sticks...

Ed Sprague too!
