He played 1B most of last season, but 3B most of his first few seasons. Where is he going to play in Boston? OF maybe?

That’s the thing he can play the OF, 1B, and 3B. With this versatility and his LH bat he makes a suitable bench player that fills a lot of needs on the team right now.

I actually like the Hinske deal, getting a left handed bat to play 3rd/1st/OF and come off the bench is something we need. Let me give a shout to Baltimore for helping us with the whole AL East thing. 1.5 games out with 2 tommorrow should be a fun weekend even though I don't see either team winning more than 3. Also with Hinske I bet he is in the lineup for the first game as his numbers vs Wang are 6-11 with 2 hr's.

Go Sox!!!

Hinske deal confirmed

By David Lefort, Boston.com Staff

The Red Sox today confirmed their trade for Blue Jays infielder/outfielder Eric Hinske, which was first reported last night.

Hinske is expected to join the Red Sox for Friday's day-night doubleheader with the Yankees at Fenway Park. He will wear uniform No. 12.

The Red Sox said they will make a corresponding roster move to accommodate Hinske once he reports. What that move will be is unknown, and could be tricky. The team is currently carrying 13 pitchers, and they’d likely be hesitant to demote or disable one of them considering the potential workload the bullpen will be called upon to handle with five games scheduled against the Yankees over four days.

That leaves position players Gabe Kapler, Alex Cora, and either Javy Lopez or Doug Mirabelli on the bench. The Sox can't carry just one catcher, and they need to keep Cora on the roster just in case Alex Gonzalez’s knee injury takes a turn for the worse. That leaves Kapler vulnerable, unless the Sox put someone on the disabled list.

I want to see Hinske in the lineup in game 1 because of his numbers against Wang. If that's the case he could replace Breslow on the roster. After the game I think the Sox should either DFA Johnson or Seanez (no great loss to see either of them go) and activate Foulke. It seems to me moving the least valuable pitcher would make more sense overall, and I kind of got that was the Sox feeling too as they positioned Johnson to start game 1. Maybe he’ll develop some phantom injury and be disabled until September. Moving Kapler doesn’t really seem to be a sensible option.

It's a great deal and nobody can deny that; however, I'm not too afraid of Hinske. We'll see how this works out.

Eh after seeing numerous stats of his against NY, vs pitcher matchups... Im all set to see him become part of the rivalry

I actually like this move, if anything it will improve the bench with the addition of a strong lefty bat

With Hinske starting in RF today, given he has at least another year on his contract, we probably will not re-sign Nixon

I hope I'm wrong though.

why would you want to resign nixon anyways. he is not good anymore.

Hinske was the only bright spot to todays game. He even got the crowd to chant his name by his last AB. I wouldnt mind seeing the sox resign him and loose Nixon

Hinske was supposed to be an animal up in Toronto, but I don't know what happened. Hopefully some work with Papa Jack can turn his career around. A WMP/Hinske platoon is so much better than Nixon everyday with an occasional WMP appearance.

Hinske is hitting righties this year at about .305 with 11 HR in 164 AB

And the fact that he can play 1st, 3rd and OF makes him a great lefty off the bench who can get the occasional start.

Any word on who the PTBNL was? Sorry if I missed it in the thread...

Coco's Disciples - as for Foulkie, I heard somewhere that he will be activated for tonight's game to have a fresh arm in the 'pen tonight, and then he'll stay there from here on out.

Who will get sent down??

Johnson, Snyder or Seanez is my guess

Johnson, I presume. Gives us another fresh arm, despite not very good, he is an arm. This is similar to what the Yankees did with Lidle, except it is after the start. I hope we never see Johnson again, but we will. Next start should be Snyder, as I believe Johnson would be going on 3 days rest. To do this Snyder would need to not pitch again, so if someone sucks, we got a problem. David Pauley, anyone?
