Red Sox try to end humbling five-game slide

Baltimore (51-64) at Boston (65-48) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Teams with losing records have been big trouble for the Boston Red Sox recently.

The Red Sox will try to end a season-high five game losing streak on Friday, when they open a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Boston's skid has come entirely against last-place teams, including a three-game sweep at American League-worst Kansas City.

The Red Sox have gone just 12-15 since the All-Star break, going from a three-game lead atop the American League East Division to three games behind the New York Yankees.

Despite ace Curt Schilling being staked to a two-run lead in the eighth inning Thursday, Boston took a second consecutive 5-4 loss en route to its first road sweep at the hands of the Royals since 1991. Kansas City also rallied for two runs against Red Sox rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon for a 5-4 triumph on Wednesday.

David Wells (0-2, 8.05 ERA) started the first game of the skid, allowing five runs - one earned - and eight hits in six innings of an 8-5 loss at Tampa Bay last Saturday. It was the first time in four starts this season he made it out of the fifth inning.

The 43-year-old Wells has posted an 11.08 ERA in three starts at Fenway Park this season. He went 8-1 with a 3.07 here last year, including a seven-hitter in a 5-1 win against Baltimore on September 4.

A season-high 13 games under .500, the Orioles will counter with rookie Adam Loewen (2-3, 5.72). The 22-year-old lefthander pitched the first 6 1/3 innings of a one-hitter in Saturday's 5-0 win over New York.

Loewen has gone 2-1 with a 4.02 ERA in his last six outings after going 0-2 with a 7.82 ERA in the first six appearances of his major league career. He has gone 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA on the road, where Baltimore has lost 32 of its last 49 games.

Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez has hit in a career-high 25 consecutive games. He has hit .361 at Fenway Park this season.

Today's mojo (I'm going back to the old days of the mojo...):

This isn't going to be an easy game. The O's generally play us hard, not this year though.

I saw Loewen start vs. the Mariners at Camden Yards a few weeks ago, and he overpowered them. Plus he is a lefty, and the Sox suck verse lefties.

Hopefully Wells pitches a good game. We need to win some games. This was the easiest stretch in the schedule all year, the 4 worst teams in the AL in a row, and we've blown it. Let's at least stop some of the bleeding.

Wily Mo hitting 7th, what is wrong with Francona's brain when it comes to WMP?

My take is that Tito doesn’t have any trust in WMP, especially defensively. And if weren’t for Theo stepping in, he would have him benched for most games in favor of Kapler. It’s almost the same story as last year when Millar was used over and over instead of giving Youk a chance.

This practice is probably what pisses me off the most when it comes to Tito.

It'll be interesting to hear Lopez's reception at Fenway after sucking hardcore, with the exception of about 2 at bats.

He's 4 for 8 his last 2 games with 2 Doubles & 2 RBIs. His passed balls would be the bigger reason to boo him, but as of now I dont think the boo-birds will be out.

Adam Loewen (1st career appearance vs Boston)

David Wells (44 games vs Baltimore, 16-12 record & 1 save with a 3.98 ERA---Career at Fenway Park in 46 games, 18-12 record with a 4.61 ERA)

Brian Roberts, 7 for 32 (.219 avg) 4 RBIs, Walk, 3 Ks, 2 SBs

Melvin Mora, 13 for 40 (.325 avg) Double, 3 HRs, 5 RBIs, Walk, 8 Ks, SB

Miguel Tejada, 15 for 44 (.341 avg) 2 Doubles, 5 HRs, 10 RBIs, Walk, 6 Ks, SB

Jeff Conine, 10 for 40 (.250 avg) 3 Doubles, 4 HRs, 8 RBIs, 3 Walks, 8 Ks

Ramon Hernandez, 7 for 16 (.438 avg) 2 Doubles, Walk

Fernando Tatis, 1 for 1 (1.000 avg)

Corey Patterson, 3 for 7 (.429 avg) HR, RBI

Kevin Millar, 1 for 17 (.059 avg) Double, Walk, 2 Ks

Nick Markakis --

///

Jay Gibbons, 7 for 29 (.241 avg) 2 Doubles, HR, RBI, Walk, 6 Ks

Chris Gomez, 5 for 20 (.250 avg) Double, Walk, 2 Ks, SB

Chris Widger, 3 for 11 (.273 avg) Double, RBI, 2 Walks, 3 Ks, SB

I'm aware of that, but booing is not what we need, it will just affect them more. Get behind them, and give them the energy to go out there and play. No one wants to play in front of a bunch of booing fans. The better way to show we care is to continue to root them on and go crazy everytime we score. Not booing someone for doing a s*** job.

WMP hitting behind Lowell makes some sense. He's the only power threat in the bottom of the lineup.

No, they need booing. They need a fire lit under their asses. I'd boo them if I were going to be there.

No need to be nice. These aren't 8 year old girls. Enough pampering them with love and cheers.

Plus, if they win, or ever just score a run, it will be all cheers again.

I seriously doubt booing them will change their play for the worse.

I'm sure some players will hear boos. This is Fenway we're talking about, where the fans are always rabid and into the game. I don't think a 5 game losing streak is gonna be enough to break the bajillion straight sellout streak the sox have going.

Oh, I know, I'm just saying the nice way to go about it would be to cheer them and go crazy.

I never said I would go the nice way. It would be very hard for me not to boo these suck at lifes right now.

True fans will give them a rousing cheer, indicating that they're behind them through the good and bad. It would take 2-3 years of major disappointments before you see a non-sellout.

So basically we're telling them that no matter what, we are satisfied with what they are doing. That will really get them motivated....:dunno:

And for the record, I think they wont get booed right away. It takes more than what I think is a minor blip in the road for an all out boo. I agree with jaksonianmarch that if they get behind, that they will get an ear full.

Although, I doubt that MLB players need that much motivation from the fans. Sure there's home field advantage and all that based on the fans, but I doubt Manny's gonna strike out or hit a homerun depending on how loud we boo/cheer him.
