First off, I refuse to refer to the Angels as from Los Angeles. I hate it. It's Anaheim, damn it!

I had a few requests for some "schillingouttheks" mojo, and since I have not started a gamethread in quite awhile, I figure, why not? All the games are starting to count now with a 5 game weekend series (including Monday) with the Yanks, and other series with the Jays, Twins, White Sox and Tigers coming up down the stretch. Go Sox!

Red Sox rookie Lester seeks to remain unbeaten

LA Angels (52-49) at Boston (61-39) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Without Jon Lester, the Boston Red Sox might not even be in first place.

The rookie lefthander seeks to remain unbeaten Friday night as the Red Sox host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the opener of a three-game series.

One of Boston's top pitching prospects, Lester made his debut on June 10 vs. Texas. He struggled in that start but in his next seven starts allowed two runs or less as he became the first rookie lefthander in team history to win his first five decisions.

Lester struggled last Sunday in Seattle but did not get a decision, allowing season highs of five runs and eight hits in just five innings of a 9-8 loss.

Boston returns home after a 3-3 road trip through Seattle and Oakland. The Red Sox failed to complete the sweep in Oakland as they managed just four hits in a 5-1 loss on Wednesday.

The Angels have been rolling in July. On Wednesday, they won for the 17th time in 22 games as Juan Rivera drove in four runs in a 15-6 rout at Tampa Bay.

Anaheim enters one half-game behind first-place Oakland in the AL West and will send Kelvim Escobar (6-9, 3.88) to the mound.

After dropping seven straight decisions, Escobar is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in his last three outings.

The Red Sox have just announced that tonight's game has been delayed due to heavy rains. Right now, it is pouring at Fenway, as sheets of rain are blanketing the ballpark. The rain is falling so hard that the bullpens in rightfield are not visible from the press box. There are also high winds and thunder and lighting. The rain is expected to last at least one hour, according to the team. The grounds crew has placed the tarp on the field and fans were evacuated from the Monster Seats.

I'm about to leave for a week on a camping trip so I won't get to see my Sox for a long time. Was hoping to at least see a few innings before my ride comes but this s*** had to happen

Good job, Schill. I think Moreno has to read this game thread, seeing his name change still hasn't worked yet. New England still refers to his team as Anaheim.

Take that, Arte! Motherf***er.

I'm from Pittsburgh and I still call them Anaheim. I refuse to accept a silly name change ... they still play in the same damn place.

You know, I used to work for Arte Moreno. He used to own the largest billboard company in the US. It was called Outdoor Systems Advertising. I was a graphic guy for them my first year out of school in 1997. s***** job.

But Arte was cool. He was very communicative. One time during a run of layoffs nationwide (after years of record profits), he had a conference call set up so that all the Outdoor Systems plants could listen in as he named the names of the plants to be downsized. It was a lot like the NBA draft except if you were chosen, you were f***ed.

Still, he seemed like a nice guy. He didn't have to do that.
