The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox try to extend their home winning streak to 10 games when they open the second half of their season Thursday against the Oakland Athletics. Boston (53-33), which completed a 5-5 road trip with a 19-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox in its last game before the All-Star break on Sunday, preceded the trip by winning nine consecutive home games during a 12-game win streak.

The Red Sox are 17-5 in their last 22 games overall and hold a three-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the division. New York opens a six-game homestand Friday with the first of three contests against the White Sox and won't face Boston again until a five-game set at Fenway Park from Aug. 18-21.

"I do think this is the most comfortable I've been with a team since I've been here," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Different years are different, (different) personalities. ... But this team, when we lose, they show up the next day with the same demeanor. When we win, they don't get carried away." Rookie Jon Lester (4-0, 3.06 ERA) has been solid for Boston since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in early June, and is slated to start against the Athletics (45-43) for the first time Thursday.

Lester is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts since June 10, when he lasted just 4 1-3 innings in his major league debut in Boston's 7-4 defeat to Texas. The 22-year-old left-hander has given up three runs or less in all six of his outings and is coming off a 7-2 win at Chicago last Friday in which he allowed two runs over six innings.

"He's shown a very good amount of poise at a young age," Francona said. "You have to have stuff with it or it doesn't matter. It's a nice combination." Oakland went 3-7 on its homestand before the break, losing the last three games, but still shares the lead in the AL West with Texas. The Los Angeles Angels and Seattle are both within 2 1/2 games of the top spot in the division.

The Athletics have finished in either first or second place in the West in each of the last seven seasons, but manager Ken Macha's team has struggled in 2006 due to several injuries to key players, including right-hander Rich Harden and regulars Mark Ellis, Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas. "Out of my four years as manager and maybe out of my eight years here, it has been the most frustrating first half," said Macha, whose players have missed 356 games due to injuries this season.

Thursday starter Esteban Loaiza (3-5, 6.43) had a stint on the disabled list from April 30-June 7, and has been inconsistent since his return with a 3-2 record in six starts. The right-hander has allowed four or more runs in his last four starts and tied a career high by giving up four homers in Oakland's 7-5 win over the Angels last Thursday. Signed as a free agent in November, Loaiza's ERA has been above 6.00 all season and he has lasted at least six innings just five times in 10 starts.

Loaiza, 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in nine appearances against the Red Sox, has had trouble against Boston All-Star David Ortiz, who is 11-for-26 (.423) with three RBIs against him. Ortiz's 31 homers and 87 RBIs lead the majors this season. Manny Ramirez, who missed Tuesday's All-Star game due to a sore right knee, is 10-for-38 (.263) with three home runs and 13 strikeouts against Loaiza.

Boston is 14-5 against Oakland since the start of 2004, including a 10-3 record at Fenway Park.

I feel a win, a solid 5-6 IP W by Lester, and I see the Sox pounding Loiaza for an early exit. Let's pick it up right where we left off.
