Yankees send Lidle to take on Orioles

Baltimore (51-68) at New York (70-46), 7:05 p.m. ET

By Ryan Mink / MLB.com

Cory Lidle has had to wear his belt one notch tighter in recent days. That's because the Yankees pitcher has lost eight pounds since battling a stomach virus for a week.

But Lidle said he feels just about normal and is ready to face the Orioles on Wednesday.

"I don't think it will be a problem," Lidle said. "I'm pretty much going to go normally through 80 pitches, and then I'm going to start monitoring myself and see how the ball's coming out. I hit the wall pretty early [in my last start], but I think that was expected."

Lidle struggled with the virus in his last outing, Aug. 11 against the Angels. He said it made him feel more fatigued and he felt cramps in his lower stomach. Lidle went just four innings, allowing three earned runs and four hits. He threw just 79 pitches.

The Yankees righty said he has just recently been able to start eating normal food, but hasn't been able to eat as much. He also did his bullpen work one day later than usual, and hasn't done any running because he's been trying to rest his body as much as possible.

"He's back to normal," manager Joe Torre said. "He's eating and it's staying where it's supposed to, so we're pretty upbeat about him."

Lidle said he expects Jorge Posada to catch him. The two haven't worked together since Lidle was acquired on July 31, but like everything else, Lidle shrugged it off.

"You take the normal approach," Lidle said. "I just have to follow through as far as execution and see how it goes."

The Yankees, who beat Baltimore, 6-3, in Tuesday night's series opener, will face Baltimore rookie Adam Loewen. Rookie starters have a combined 3.73 ERA and 7-5 record against the Yankees this year. Loewen shut out the Yankees on Aug. 5, going 6 1/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight.

Pitching matchup

NYY: RHP Cory Lidle (1-1, 3.60 ERA)

Lidle is 4-6 with a 4.82 ERA in his career against the Orioles. His last game against them was on May 22, 2005, when Lidle was with the Phillies. He tossed a complete game, while giving up two runs to earn the win.

BAL: LHP Adam Loewen (2-4, 6.41 ERA)

Loewen baffled the Yankees on Aug. 5, shutting them out over 6 1/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight. The rookie allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings against Boston in his last outing.

Player to watch

Derek Jeter has the most success against Loewen. In two games against the rookie, Jeter is 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

I think it'd be good for you to know his average with the bases loaded is over .330.

Everyone hits better with the bases loaded. The pitchers have to throw strikes, and if they fall behind, they really have to groove some pitches. I would say almost every batter hits .030 or so higher with the bases loaded. It is a very favorable situation for batters.

Game Preview:

Yanks hope to rebound behind Wright

Baltimore (52-68) at New York (70-47), 1:05 p.m. ET

By Ryan Mink / MLB.com

After dropping the second contest of a three-game series against the Orioles on Wednesday, the Yankees will turn to one of their most steady starters Thursday.

Jaret Wright will make the start for the Yankees. Wright has allowed just one earned run in each of his past three starts, going 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA during that time.

Wright, who still hasn't topped six innings pitched yet this season, could have snapped that streak in his previous start on Saturday, but manager Joe Torre removed him after Wright had to pounce on a ball.

Wright said it would be nice to go more than six innings, but it isn't something he thinks about when he goes out to the mound.

"Every time I go out, I'm thinking to go as long as I can," he said after his last outing, a 5 1/3-inning, two-hit performance.

Pitching matchup

NYY: RHP Jaret Wright (9-6, 4.24 ERA)

Wright is on a three-game win streak and hasn't lost since July 21. He is shooting for his third double-digit win total since coming up in 1997.

BAL: RHP Rodrigo Lopez (8-12, 6.20 ERA)

Lopez leads the American League in losses, hits allowed (188) and earned runs (101). He missed his last scheduled start because the Orioles had an off-day.

Player to watch

Derek Jeter has a career .449 batting average (22-for-49) with four homers and 10 RBIs against Lopez.

Sox/Yanks series

Game 1, Johnson vs Wang... Edge NY

Game 2, Lester vs Ponson... Edge Bos

EDIT: Game 3, Beckett vs Johnson... pitching duel? nay Im thinking this will be a game of who can over-slug the other team

Game 4, Schilling vs Mussina... now this is a real pitcher's duel, Schil comes out on top barely

Game 5, Wells vs Wright... Edge Bos

Mussina pitching 2 days in a row, now that's gutsy:D

I think it is actually this...

Game 1: Jason Johnson vs Chien-Ming Wang... Edge NY, by a lot

Game 2: Jonathan Lester vs Sidney Ponson... Edge Boston, by a little

Game 3: Joshua Beckett vs Randall Johnson...Edge...who knows. Could be 0-0, could be 10-10

Game 4: Curtis Schilling vs Michael Mussina...even

Game 5: David Wells vs Cory Lidle... Edge Boston

Lidle is starting game 5. Wright won't start on 4 days rest.

Should be a great series. There are a lot of even matchups.

Brian Bruney?

I looked at an update on my phone (thankfully, I was working and missed the game) and it had him pitching. I was confused.
