Traditionally the AS Break is considered the halfway point in the season, but today’s game marked the middle of the Sox, coming in with a 50-31 record. Same for the Yankees finishing today with a 46-35 record, 4 games behind the Sox. The Blue Jays have a 46-36 record going into tonight.

So with the Wild Card looking more and more that it will be coming out of the AL Central this year, how many wins will it take to win the AL East?

Sox are on pace to win 100 games exactly. The halfway mark is today, and doubling stats is always fun. Schilling and Beckett with 20 wins, Papelbon with 50 saves, Ortiz 54 homers, Manny 46. Yankees 92 wins. I would say if we get 95 wins, we are probably good. But you never know, the Yankees will likely make a big splash soon. Hey, deadline in less than a month. We should do somethign tooo.

The Blue Jays are hanging tough coming in with a 47-36 record and are by no means out of the equation in the East. They’ve been strong against Boston this season with a 7-4 record as of today.

Using Link the top 3 East teams meet head-to-head:

Boston vs New York - 9

Boston vs Toronto - 8

New York vs Toronto - 14

the sox will come down to earth as evidenced by this god awful drubbing by the drays

they wont win 100 in the al east

95 won the division last season

the sox may indeed win more than 95 but our closest competetors wont

We just need to get back into a groove, it we get hot like 2004 at the end of the season, even remotely close to that, we're in excellent shape.

At this point the playoff picture looks a'something like this:

AL West: Oakland

3 out of 4 teams:

Sox

Yankees

Tigers

White Sox

I respect the Blue Jays, but I just don't feel like they have a team that can make a serious run for the playoffs. As earlier noted by RoyNHSox, the Yankees play the Blue Jays more than we do, and the Blue Jays will likely play spoiler here. Although I do not think the Jays will be in the playoffs, I think they will play a huge role as to who gets in.

I got Sox, Sox, Tigers.

to answer the original question, I think 95 is the magic number in the East

in the West, 90 will probably do it

in the central, the winner will likely have 108 +

Another note, watch out for the Mariners in the West

actually the east will get really interesting in the 2nd half...considering that injuries as of now may not be as bad as they were in the first half. i'd say 95 to win the east as well.. The White sox may slip just enough...

is it just me or does Tampa look good all of a sudden? The orioles may be the bottom feeders after just one series in the 2nd half..

Orioles.....bottom feeders......

I noticed all year that the Rays' offense was a force. Their downfall is their huge lack of starting pitching (exception to Kazmir of course), and their abomination of a bullpen. They can really hit the ball, but that's about it.

And that is why it was mind boggling when they took 3B Evan Longeria over LHP Andrew Miller.

Wasn't Miller a junior, and didn't they draft him out of HS? Maybe they wanted to avoid a tough sign.

He was a junior and they did draft him out of HS but they didn't need another positional player.

They drafted the best player available outside of Miller in their draft slot. I can't fault them for that because that is what teams should do.

And do any of you really care who the hell the Devil Rays drafted first. I'm only concerned that when they come to Boston again we beat the living s*** out of them and remind them that we are the Red Sox and not those frauds who went down to Tropicana Hole and lost three of four.

It is going to take 96 wins to take the AL East this season and we should be able to do it. Let's just hope that our guys all do their part and we get the pitching needed to make it happen.:D :D :D

It’s almost mind boggling how circumstances have changed since I first started this thread. There’s no doubt now that the Yankees have non-mathematically clinched the AL East as of today. 95 wins was what I projected back in July, but 85 wins seems more likely right now.

I think the yanks will win 97 games and win the east and head the AL as the 1 seed. They are the best team in the AL in my opinion.

Jackson, I hate to admit it as a Red Sox fan but the Yankees have earned their AL East title they are going to clinch sometime soon. They overcame their injuries as Jeter, Damon, Giambi, Cano and the rest sucked it up and went on. We suffered some injuries and it nearly crippled us. Of course, we had even more but, still, we should have been able to keep the mixmaster going. Losing two of three to the Rays at home, getting swept by the Royals in KC, then falling in five straight to the Yankees in our house???? Sorry to say, but we brought it on ourselves. There's always next year, though. Hope springs eternal every Spring.

Crespo, read back on this post from start to finish. Easy to see we really got carried away back in early July. I wonder what the suicide watch would have been had we known what goes going to transpire in August. As I told 700, if you have a NL team that is in contention you might start following them a little more closely. Otherwise, keep the faith until next spring. I just have to believe the Red Sox FO is going to get some religion and try to rectify the blundering errors they've made the past two off seasons. We can hope anyway.

jackson, I'm hoping that the team braces itself and tries to close out the season on a high note. I am going to New York for that series in two weeks. I have tickets for the three regularly scheduled games, but not for the make-up game. Hopefully, I can see a couple of Red Sox wins. I would hate to see them mail it in. There is a thing called pride and I have always believed the Red Sox had plenty of it. I hope I am not wrong.

If I were you, I'd sell those tickets, unless you want to see a team on cruise control vs a team in operation shutdown.

The Twins and the White Sox are both losing tonight. The idle Red Sox could be 6 behind the wins and 5 behind the White Sox in the loss column at the end of the night. If the Red Sox had two or three starters, they might have had a chance.
