Unless David Pauley shows something incredible in a couple starts I would expect Alvarez or Lester to take this spot later in the week.

However, wouldn't it be nice for the kid to do a nice job and add to our young arm arsenal....perhaps trade bait.

What is the latest on Wells? I heard that the Surgeon confirmed the bone bruise and that there was no structural damage to the knee. Any word on when he might throw again, rehab, etc.?

this could be the end for The Big Guy. If it is the end, that was a sad way to see him go. I like him and I hope he can come back and give us some quality innings. As for Pauley, if he doesn't show us anything, I think it's time to trade for a 4/5 starter and a solid bench player to complement Cora and WMP (when he comes back). Perhaps packaging Snow and a low level prospect?

Pauley has already been optioned to pawtucket. And no one is going to give us anything for Snow.

wells is awhile away....his knee is still not responding....lester could be here to stay
He'll have to win if he wants to stay. They can't afford to coddle him with low pitch counts, etc. I am not quite sure that he can take the ball every 5th day and consistently give the team quality starts. If he can that would be a huge shot in the arm. They can't wait three or four weeks and five or six times around the rotation to find out.

Theo said before the year that this could be a year of transition when we start seeing the farm system up here more. Well its here now. I don't expect a big move. It's going to be Lester for awhile unless wells has a miracle recovery.

If the 5th spot in the rotation becomes a give away game, they will have to make a move. Wake is around .500, and we'll all have to pray that Clement can get to .500 form. If the 5th spot is a give away, there will be enormous pressure on Schilling and Beckett each time they pitch.

riveraulwick-- Thanks for the time today Gordon. What is the latest word on Wells, and assuming he can't get back, how good does Lester have to be in order to remain with the big league team?

Gordon_Edes-- Riveraul, I don't know if you saw what Francona said yesterday, that Wells isn't even at a point where he can do any weight-bearing exercises. Personally, I think Wells has probably pitched his last game for the Sox. He's missed a ton of time already, and I think at his age and in his condition, he will decide that the effort isn't worth it anymore. As for Lester, I can't see the Sox yo-yoing him up and down. Unless he just falls apart, which I'd be shocked to see, I believe he's here to stay.

from Edes online chat today.

i think hes right, that Wells has pitched his last game

There is an open spot in the rotation that they are filling with bums. I think Wells could find a slot, but I don't think he is going to return.

It looks like Wells’ recovery might be coming around sooner than expected.

From the Projo:

Wells close to pitching

News on David Wells took a positive spin yesterday. Francona said the veteran left-hander, who is in San Diego rehabbing his ailing right knee, is optimistic he'll be able to start throwing soon. The Red Sox skipper also said it's likely Wells will join the team on its next road trip to play the Marlins, the Devil Rays and the White Sox.

I would assume at this point that Wells will be taking Clements spot in the order... I really hope they aren't too eager to demote Lester.

It’s almost like there’s a logjam developing for the #5 starter: Clement, Johnson, Boomer, and a few others who are in the minors. In my mind Lester is the #4 now.

I don't know if I'd call it a logjam. It's more like a pile of crap.

Wells looked good in a 5 inning simulated game. Edes says that he'll probably be making a rehab start this weekend, and if everything works out well, he could be in the rotation next week.

Thats a huge bonus. Plus Tim Wakefield making a return in several weeks. That will probably eliminate any rumors that the Red Sox make a stab at a starting pitcher before the deadline. They will ride Kyle Snyder until the rotation is filled out.

At first I didn't know why the Red Sox would be making a push for Abreu and not a starting pitcher but it makes more sense now.
