If you know anything about baseball you could clearly see the difference in his pitching mechanics last season. He couldn't hide the splitter to any extent and thats his money pitch. He wasn't able to get the velocity and make a full push when delivering his fastball which means......................no pitches are getting set and the pitches he made wouldn't move enough with the down velocity meaning his pitches wouldn't hit the locations...lets talk about someone else who has to deal with something like that this season....

Randy Johnson is 43 years old and for anyone that saw...his velocity was down last year. That really hurt the slider more than anything cause he couldn't get it to drop down. The games he got hammered were the games he was unable to get the slider down in the zone. Luckily his fastball velocity was down but he was still able to hit 95-93. The big problem with Johnson is his age and he is losing strength. Once it starts going....it will start going quick.

Between the two of them...whoever is in the best shape going into this year will have a better season. Everything I have heard was that Curt Schilling was making great strides and in fantastic shape (I saw a pic..he is in great shape for Schill standards). I haven't heard anything from Johnson and he will reach a peak age before Schilling....should be interesting to watch but I will deffinitly put the excuse on his injury. I wanna see you push off with an injured foot and see how you do.

his strength on pushing off was fine. He was hitting 98 mph, you dont do that with a weak leg...

Posted
as he was doing that by the end of the season, July/August he was lucky to reach 95. Hence a rehabbing process of playing hurt

FACT is, he had good velocity for the most part last yr.

FACT is, his problem was location and a flat splitty.

Other than that, everything else is innuendo and excuse making....

From July-mid Sept. he was consistent at around 88-92 mph, with a couple of peaks at 93-94. I went to his 3rd to last start in Tampa, and it was the first time I saw him consistently at 91-94 with a couple of pitches hitting 95-96. At no time did he hit 98 like you say.

I distinctly remember watching a yankees - jays game at my yankee fan friends house this summer and johnson topped out at 91 like once or twice and all we talked about was what a terrible contract it was he signed.

He came around towards the end of the year, and something was probably nagging at him during the bulk of the season, but to be honest, what do you expect when you are his age? What is he like 43 now? The guy is not dominant like he used to be, and he won't pitch any better this year than he did last.

I watch every Red Sox game and unfortunatly (being in NY half the time) I have to watch the Yankee games. Toward the end of the season Curt Schilling was hittin 92-94 MPH. I did not see him hit 96 MPH on the gun and CERTAINLY did not see him hit 98.

Randy Johnson was hitting 93-95 and sometimes would hit 97.

You are incorrect with your statement and overall argument. You have to do some research if you plan to post here otherwise we will rip you to pieces.

We do.......By two games in the standings; and win the divisional series and on to the ALCS. Then you guys are on your own because I have no predictions beyond this point.

Yeah, last I checked you weren't Schill or any source close to him

(Curt Schilling) I came back way too early, and my ankle stopped being seriously prohibitive about 15 days prior to the end of the regular season.

If you say it more than once is it more likely to come true?

Why do you have to ruin my evening and want me to throw up my dinner by mentioning McCarver anyway. He is a first class blowhard who fancies himself as an expert and is nothing more than a house man to the highest bidder. I vividly recall the 2003 and 2004 ALCS playoffs between us and the Evil Empire and his bias for the Yankees was sickening. I almost believed that he was on Georgie Porgy's payroll. What a putz.

I believe when win the East but as I seeing it is a flip flop all season between us and the yanks. I thought last year Holaday broke his leg? Maybe he won't be the same. Also Ryan and Burnett are big question marks. Burnett is an average pitcher who luckily found a shallow year in free agent pitching depth. Ryan was a first year closer and n one really ever saw this guy alot and was not in a pressure situtaion alot last year. The Jays I think start as the O's did last year and then tail off. Yanks I think get bothered by too many injuries too over come and that are pitching depth comes in handy at the season's end

Sorry about that. I erred by posting twice. Hey, though, you have a point. Ever heard of the saying that if you repeat something over and over you start to believe it? Well, every little bit helps if you root for the Red Sox, right. Maybe it will give our team a little edge.

That is SO going into my sig if possible

Hey Champ, anything to help out. You have no idea how McCarver grates on my nerves. Did he ever announce Yankee games? I swear, unless I am way off base, he sounded so pro-Yankees during those two playoff series' in '03 and '04. Of course, I could just be paranoid; the Red Sox do that to me, but I really think the guy was biased in favor of the Yankees.

McCarver is such a f***ing moron that he can sound pro-anybody. One thing Yankee and Sox fans agree on is that Fox games make all of us sick....

Just brought up the thread, so my late response:

1. YOUR Boston Red Sox

2. Toronto Blue Jays

3. Baltimore Crab Cakes

4. Tampa Bay Devil Rays

5. new york spankees

The Yankees shouldn't be worried about keeping up with us. Their first priority should be making sure the Mets don't surpass them as "New York's best team". Your $52M man, Damon will most likely tear something while working on a commercial and be out for the year.

I might be wrong here, but isn't McCarver a former Yankee?

he got let go from the Yanks broadcast booth because George didn't like him criticizing the Yanks so much.

I guess nobody likes that guy - not even George. I bet even Joe Buck can't stand him.

This is the quote from Tim McCarver that made me realizehe was a complete idiot.

"You know, pitching is about throwing strikes."

Thanks Tim, really, great work.

One of my favs was during the 2004 ALCS when one of our pitchers walked a NYY batter and he said that was equal to giving up a HR.......that's news to me!

He's like Bill Walton. Only problem is I think he believes his own hyperbole.

I can't decide to call Tim Capt. Redundancy or Mr. Hyperbole. Someone give me a hand here

Joe Buck was rightfully getting annoyed at him during the last Sox/Yanks game when McCarver kept playing the song "Everybody hurts" that was basically poking fun at the Red Sox fans close to the end of the game. Third time McCarver played it, Buck just went "Would you turn that off already?" Like I said it was that point I muted the tv and put the radio on.
