It's all about the pitching anyhow. keep clement for the first half - he was 13-2 before he ran into bad luck last year. Then decide.

That shot to the head, may have had an effect, however he's been a first half pitcher his entire career and its fairly well known.

i dont see youk hitting 10 hrs next year

theres nothing to suggest he will

What the hell are you smoking man? Here's his line from 2004, in that crazy up and down from AAA to MLB, replacement for Mueller for a time, first action in the bigs season:

72 Games208 AB38 R54 H11 2B0 3B7 HR35 RBI33 BB.260 AVG.367 OBP.413 SLG

I'd be willing to throw down some cash that he's going to hit 20-25 HR this year, assuming he gets 500-600 at bats. Judging by the sox infatuation with OBP, I'm thinking its safe to say he'll get his at bats. Frankly, I think his season will look kinda like this:

145 Games 525 AB 21 HR 80 RBI .285 AVG .390 OBP

Or something like that. I think the full time playing will agree with him. He's a solid guy, hard worker, professional hitter, and he has some pop in his bat.

I mean Christ, Damon hit 10 HR last year, and he's not exactly oozing with power... and he hit 20 the year before. Youkilis certainly does have power, its just hard to really see that with the constant change from level to level in his career... especially the up and down again since he got up to the bigs. And its important to note the only reason he ever went back down to the AAA level was because he was blocked on the big club at basically all of his positions.

I could see Youk hitting 15+ HRS. He's never been power guy per se, but I put him more in the contact category by choice (àla Boggs.) FWIW Youk hit 7 in around 200ABs for the Sox in 2004.

I'd say Youk in the 10-20 HR range is legitimate. But its his OBP that's a plus.

To be precise. I think YOUK will get 17hrs and about 70 RBI's. He'll play like an average baseball player and plus like Sox Fan on Cape said his OPB is what to watch for.

That may be true but he never had a dedicated catcher like tek before. Plus, he had his knee worked on and I believe that may be part of the problem. we'll get to see if that makes a difference this year plus he will know the hitters better. I just hope he doesn't get mentally whipped from all of the trade rumors

We're on the same page there Col. SP throughout the league is terrible so don't give him up too soon or on the cheap.

It's too easy to make the generalization that he sucked in his second half.

If you go into the numbers, he had 11 starts after getting whacked in TB. (The TEAM went 7-4 over those 11 regular season starts.)

He got hit pretty good his first start back from that, but then ran off six solid starts w/ five of 'em being QS territory or better. W/ regard to last impressions being lasting impressions though, he was shaky down the stretch even though they went 2-2 in his last four starts. His playoff "effort" was lacking.

I wonder if Theo being back on board is a lifeline for him for that matter...

How many of you guys would pull the trigger on the Clement for Kearns deal?

IMMEDIATELY. If the Coco deal is dead, and we can get someone like Kearns for Clement, it needs to be done. We are overloaded on starting pitching right now, and Kearns would be a good fit...just not in the leadoff spot. BUT we do have Loretta and Youk to fill that spot, and Kearns is good for 25 HR and 100 RBI, hitting about .260. I'd take it for the amount that he'll be making...and oh yeah, he turns 26 in May. Anyone know how much longer he's arbitration eligible for? Clement for Kearns should be done in a heartbeat. Send them cash too, I don't give a s***.

PS that 25/100 stat would be given a full season...he may be closer to 20/80 given his history. He's played 49 games in center field in his career, versus 313 in right.

I gotta agree with you Guns.. Clement carried the Sox for half of 2005 and even though he got worse as the season progressed I don't think it was THAT bad....

he's a good pitcher and yes, pitching is where the league suffers these days... I think another season with Varitek and no injuries will finally give Clement the chance to be what he truly is.. which is nasty!!!

The thing with Clement is this.. Last year he was forced into the ace role in the rotation because of injuries to Schill and Wells. I'd still like to see what happens if he pitches in the #3 slot that he was supposed to be pitching in. Remember, he was the DLowe replacement and shouldn't have been lined up against #1 and #2 starters for the entire year. I think it just wore him out - and that shot to the head didn't help any (he noticably changed his landing spot in starts afterwards and was flinching a lot).

Now, that said, he is the odd man out if we need to trade a starter for a centerfielder. I think he could be the ace on a lesser staff in any other division and I think it would be a good pickup for one of those teams.

I don't know why i keep checking this board, baseball.com and SoSH every ten minutes. Any trade that is going to happen will likely happen under the radar or not at all. Just keep Marte and start freaking stern or someone at this point. I don't care. At this point I'm all for just keeping Marte and watching him turn into a 30+ HR guy within th enext few years and a ROY candidate next year.

As it stands right now, we may have the worst infield in the league (I do not know enough about Mark Loretta to have an opinion on him)

All I can say is huh??

3rd base- 2 gold glover Mike Lowell, just recently won the 05

shortstop- Alex Gonzalez is nearing a contract with Boston, and he has been rated one of te best defensive shortstops in baseball

2nd base- Mark Loretta has never been one to be error prone

1st base- Kevin Youkilis has played during his time at 1st, and now has 6 gold glover JT Snow to back him up

Hardly the worst, Its looking so far it could conetnd to be the best of at least the division

well since you put it that way, riverside, I'd have to say that defensively it looks f***ing awesome...

I do enjoy some great "D" and sorely missed Mientkiewicz in 2005 for his own brand of SS @ 1B

Don't forget, Loretta and Lowell are former all-stars because of their bats too.

this is true, Example.. very true... I think Lowell's bat is gonna be very decent now that he gets 81 games at the Fens.. I already miss Billy Mueller Yankee Killer though...

what makes you say hes a proffesional hitter?

give him 1/2 a season in the show before you blow your money

portland or pawtucket aint boston

ask phil lancelotti or the 1st basemen who hit 30hrs in pawtucket for us last year

This is what he's done in his career at Pro Player Stadium.

Not substitute the left field with the Green Monster, and a shorter LF too.

Lowell will put up solid, if not monstrous, numbers this year.

In the perfect world, that would be true. We don't know if his numbers from last year are the comings of a trend, or just a one year faze. I don't know if he was hurt, but if he was, wouldn't the Marlins DL him?

Yes, I would do that, but the Sox should talk to Cinci about the availability of Felipe Lopez. He would be phenomenal in Fenway, hit leadoff, and I would trade Clement and Shoppach for him.

Lopez is a SS correct?

I don't believe the Reds would be inclined to trade one of their top young players. Kearns might be on the chopping block because he's always hurt, and is close to free agency.

But, hey if we can pull that off, I think it would be an incredible deal.

According to rotoworld, the Red Sox have signed former Rockie Dustin Mohr to a minor league contract. He could become the team's 4th outfielder/platoon partner with Trot as rotoworld has suggested. If that were true, I believe its now best to trade away Tony G. He's my boy, but damn he deserves his playing time.

The Red Sox and Dustan Mohr have agreed to terms on a minor league deal, according to the Denver Post. Mohr may be a better fallback in center field than Willie Harris or Adam Stern, but he still can't be viewed as much of an option as a regular there. It might be that he'll act as the right fielder against left-handers until Gabe Kapler returns from his torn Achilles' tendon, but even in that role, he isn't a great choice. While Mohr was surprisingly productive for the Giants in 2004 (.274/.394/.437), he was a lousy player last year (.154/.205/.301 outside of Coors Field) and his track record before the two aberrations suggested he was a fifth outfielder at best.

I think he's a better option than Kapler is.

He hit .274/.349/.558/.907 vs left handers last year.

And the last three years overall .261 .345 .470 .815. More power than Kapler, and could serve as a lefty masher off the bench. Not a bad signing.
