the 6 player deal is off for now...

rotoworld-

WIP radio in Philadelphia is reporting that the Coco Crisp trade is being held up because Red Sox reliever Guillermo Mota failed his physical.

Concerns about Mota's elbow or shoulder are apparently providing a stumbling block, but they may not kill the deal. There's been talk of Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen being involved, with him maybe replacing Mota in the deal. It's also possible that David Riske could be taken out of the trade. If the Guardians can get Andy Marte, they shouldn't let the relievers stand in the way. It's just too good of a trade for them. The Phillies would also come away disappointed if the Crisp deal doesn't go down, as they won't be getting Arthur Rhodes in return for Jason Michaels. Jan. 24 - 5:05 pm et

wow...

please dont put delcarmen in this. Give them Seanez or Tavarez.

Dont trade Marte at all sounds better, and just put Matos in CF or something for hte season. Plus we cant trade Seanez or Tavarez until June 15th or sometime around then since we just signed them as FAs.

I think this is gamesmanship by the Guardians similar to what the Sox did with the Marlins in the Beckett deal. The Sox should immediately pull the trigger on the Matos-Graffy deal (if it is available) to show that they are not desperate for Crisp.

If we can get Matos within the next day I think it puts some pressure on CLE to show we have a CF, and that they either offer something good or Marte stays a Red Sox.

i had a feeling mota would fail his physical considering he never even took one for boston.
Why should we give Mota a physical, when we never gave Marte a physical?

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't agree.

Marte, if not given a physical would not really hurt the Red Sox that bad. Marte's injury problems are just rumors, and nothing's been confirmed. Throw in the fact, that he's 21, has a world of potential, and with our advances in medical science, sitting out a year wouldn't hurt the Boston Red Sox that badly.

Mota, however, is a major league ballplayer making a pretty good chunk for a middle reliever. Being a middle market team like the Guardians, I'd be extremely wary of pulling the trigger on an injury prone middle reliever, whom I'm happening to be paying 3 million for.

we also never gave beckett a physical either. the red sox really have to get things straight down there. whenever they make a deal they should bring in every player involved coming to them in for a physical before pulling a trigger on any deal.

Alright first off, you cannot trade Seanez or Tavarez at this point in time. Second, this is likely a shakedown tactic by shapiro. He is now holding the sox by the ankles and shaking all the lunch money out of their pockets. He's going to get Delcarmen or their won't be a deal. Thats what I think. He's playing the sox big time. Pull a quick trigger on Graff for Matos put the pressure back on them. Counter with something similar to Shoppach and Marte for Crisp and Riske or something close to that. You can't deal another prospect in this, Crisp isn't good enough and Delcarmen has too much upside at this point.

his K rate has gone down the past few years and there is a reason that wedge never used him in tight games.

his statistics have gone down every year. wedge never put him in any tight games last year. he is not that good of a pitcher. the red sox would be smart to not throw in delcarmen to the Guardians if they ask. they would be better off scratching the hole deal right now.

Then guess what...they are back in panic mode again, and in comes teams asking for a lot.

This only makes sense if we only have one team to turn to. By this logic, if we have 3 teams to turn to, and they all think they can ask for more than their player is worth, then only one of them can be right. So why wouldn't a team lower their price when it looks like we aren't dealing with them any more? If another team thinks they can improve themselves they aren't going to ask for more unless they are the only option.

Riske is no stiff. Don't jest. 0.96 WHIP. I will repeat that number until your eyes bleed from reading it. Riske is great. Getting no holds could be from a change in role, champ it certainly doesn't determine a players effectiveness. K-Rate isn't god either though that is interesting I don't think its indicative of decline.

I'm not saying throwing in Delcarmen would be the right thing to do, I actually think at this point you might strongly consider walking away getting Michaels and Mato's if your name is Theo Epstein. Shapiro is a tricky man, don't answer his phone calls, Theo. Mota is likely fine. My bet is on he is a little to pricey and Shapiro figures by reporting he 'failed' his physical he can squeeze out a cheap arm with big upside.

"Ok, Mota, turn your head and cough... I think he might have a torn labrum, listen to that cough."

you dont trade 3 top ten prospects in a top 10 system without getting a very substantial player period. Crisp is good but theres no way he merits trading 3 top 10 prospects even if Riske is included. If DC is what it takes now then hang up, and go get Matos or something. DONT GET DESPERATE here, and Im pretty sure the Red Sox wont Theo knows dam well what hes doing.

Adding MDC would only make the deal worse for us, Marte/MDC/Shoppach for Crisp/Riske/Bard isnt hte kind of deal that is going to help us in the long-run. I doubt anyone here would trade DelCarmen for Mota at this point so unless Bard is replaced with a significant prospect such as Sowers, Garko or Snyder which probaly wouldnt happen. If CLE made up this stuff about Mota and the Red Sox found out id call off the talks immediatlely and tell CLE the only place they will see Marte is at 3B for the Boston Red Sox.

I'm hoping for Matos and Michaels personally. We keep Marte and we get a CFer. All smiles.

edit - the Guardians don't have to make it up so much as they only have to raise their standards as to what exactly it takes to pass their physical. thats all.

id rather not give up 3 of our top 10 prospects and get crisp back. i look at riske as nothing special who fell out of favor with wedge. he was never in any pressure situations last year as wedge relied on other pitchers instead of riske. and bard is worse than shoppach. that would be a completely one sided trade favoring cleveland.

speculation right now....if shapiro asks for MDC as a replacement the red sox should scrap everything.

mlb.com says the red sox are ready to substitute MDC in this deal. i don't know how accurate that report is but if that happens the this deal is absolutely terrible for the red sox.

i hope theo comes to save the day and squashes this whole thing. there is no reason to even through in 3 of our top 10 prospects and getting really only crisp in return. either they give us garko or synder or call this deal off.
