wow check this out:

Manny thinks he's staying in Boston

Slugger Manny Ramirez has changed his tune once again, saying now that he wants to remain with the Red Sox

By Enrique Rojas

MIAMI (ESPNdeportes.com)-- Manny Ramirez doesn't think he'll be traded to the Baltimore Orioles, or any other team for that matter. Now he's getting used to the idea of being in a Boston Red Sox uniform for a long time to come.

"There will be no trade, I'm staying in Boston, where I'm familiar with the system and where I have a lot of friends, especially David Ortiz," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com while in Miami on personal business.

Ramirez, one of the most feared hitters in the majors, had once again demanded a trade from the Red Sox, and even threatened to hold out during spring training if Boston did not grant his wish. The outfielder's contract, through which he is still owed $57 millon over the next three seasons, in addition to the unpredictability of his expressed wishes, have hampered Boston's efforts to trade him.

Over the last two weeks, the Red Sox held multiple conversations with Baltimore about a trade for Miguel Tejada, who also asked to be dealt from the Orioles, but the talks stalled when Ramirez reportedly said that he would approve the trade only if the team he was dealt to would exercise two $20 millon options on his contract.

The New York Mets also attempted to acquire the slugger during this offseason.

"I'm going to take things easy and focus on my career," said Ramirez.

The MVP of the 2004 World Series thinks Boston may still try to trade him, but Ramirez has the right to veto any deal and wants to stay in the American League. "I know the American League system. That's one reason I don't want to go to the National League," he said. "I also want to play for a contender, and I think with Boston I'm assured of that."

Ramirez, 33, hit .292 with 45 home runs and 140 RBI in 2005, his fifth season with the Red Sox. Boston signed the slugger to a eight-year, $160 million contract in December of 2000.

In his 13-year career, the first eight with the Cleveland Guardians, the nine time All-Star has a .314 average, with 435 home runs and 1,414 RBI. He was the American League batting champion in 2002 (.349) and lead the junior circuit that year in home runs (43). He lead the majors with 165 RBI in 1999.

Ramirez also reiterated his intention of playing for his native Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, and gave a vote of support to Alex Rodriguez, who reportedly will play for the United States in the international event.

"Alex is American. We have to understand that and respect him and his decision."

I guess this means i have to get over to modells as soon as possible and grab some manny shirts at 50% off before they realize he wants to stay.

Maybe Manny should stop being manny, maybe Manny should be someone without multiple personalities for a little while.

Say what you will, but I feel a lot better knowing that he wants to stay in Boston. Give us a good defensive CF and a good defensive SS and we'll be as good as we were last year, with a better pitching staff.

Manny being manny? Maybe. I'm fine with it. Now end discussions with Baltimore, unless they're willing to give us Tejada for someone not named Manny Ramirez.

Yes i agree, i could care less that manny is out in left field figuratively, all that matters is that he is staying. Crazy or not, indecisive or not, annoying or not, he is still the anchor of our offense and it feels great to know that he will be back in Fenway. At least for the '06 season...

I care. I hate his distractions. He signed an 8 year, 160 million dollar contract. For that amount of money and that big of a decision, be a man, grow a pair, and suck it up and play in Boston. Stop with the "Manny being Manny" s*** and play the damn game. Boston loves him, and the fans love him. Why would he want to leave? If he wants privacy, he should stop opening up his house to the Globe.

Are you implying he should grow a pair, to simply suck them up? that sounds painful, sorry immature of me, but i had to point that out.

The Orioles want pitching in addition to Abreu, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Who the hell do they think Tejada is, God? They want Manny, Clement, and Marte from us and they want Abreu and pitching from Philly. Last I checked Manny produced a helluva lot more than Tejada and (off memory) I believe Abreu did too. They sound like they got the Tampa syndrome of trying to rip every damn team off. Let them keep Tejada, and we will keep Manny. And everybody (well at least I will) be happy. :D

It sounds like Papi helped convince him to stay, and that he was happy with the Sox efforts to trade him. Perhaps he saw offers like Manny + Clement for Tejada and said "Hey, I'm worth more than that!".

In any case, I got the distinct impression that he initially wanted to leave because of his wife, for whatever reason--his wife, his girlfriend, whatever. The lack of a good trade makes him say to his wife "Sorry hun, I guess I gotta stay in Boston with Ortiz".

There always was that disconnect: he appeared to be having a great time playing ball in LF, urinating in the monster, pointing to everyone within 2 miles, smiling all the time, and then demanding trades. It just didn't make sense. If he was doing it for someone else then it makes a lot more sense. Manny saying he wasn't coming back to spring training could have been his way of telling his wife what she wanted to hear; the sox saying they were trying to trade him could have been the same type of thing on their end.

What concerns me is that the FO could still be trying to trade him. This would be one of those rollercoaster rides that the Sox put us on: manny wants to stay and suddenly he's shipped when everyone is rejoicing that he's coming back. Of course, now that he says he'll come back they shouldn't do it for anything less than Tejada PLUS a good prospect or two. The tables have turned indeed and I will sleep peacefully tonight, thinking of balls soaring over the coke bottle in LF all night... ahhh

sorry to burst everyone's bubble

from foxsports, apparently Manny denies ever saying those quotes. Or it might just be his agent trying to spin things in his favor in hopes of more $$$, which I thinks is the case. Didnt he start demanding a trade after he hired this new agent?

Agent Greg Genske said he called Manny Ramirez after learning of his remarks to ESPN Deportes today and Ramirez denied making the comments. Can't we at least take direct quotes at face value? For now, we'll believe the ESPN Deportes quotes and assume that Genske is just trying to spin them another way. Genske said that Ramirez would consider waiving his no-trade clause for the Orioles or another team, which doesn't exactly go against the quotes from earlier. We all know Ramirez would take a trade just about anywhere if it meant an extra $40 million. And we can be certain Genske wants his payday, too. It's possible that he's been more of a driving force than Ramirez when it comes to the trade requests.

I think Manny needs to get rid of his agent. Manny doesnt really care where he plays. His agent wants him traded to some team that will pick up his 2 year options at the end of his contract.

I don't think they want to trade him, so by being overly demanding on what they get in return they can turn to him and say, "Sorry Miguel, we couldn't strike a deal that we thought was fair, so see you in March." Tejada has already said he won't disrespect the game by tanking or not showing up if not traded.

I cant wait untill July when he wants to be traded again.

Wouldn't be any different than any other July. Regardless of what's going on in the guy's head, you can still pencil him in for .300 40 120. As long as he keeps doing that, he can request all the trades he wants.

According to Genske, Manny didn't know he was talking to a reporter.

Agent: Manny didn't make comments

Slugger claims he doesn't recall speaking to media about trade

After spending much of the winter trying to accommodate star slugger Manny Ramirez's wish for a trade, it appears the Red Sox might now have to stop in their tracks.

Or maybe not.

Ramirez, who as a 10-5 player (10 years in the Major Leagues, five with the same team) can veto any potential deal, supposedly told an ESPN Deportes reporter in Miami that he no longer wants to be traded.

"There will be no trade. I'm staying in Boston, where I'm familiar with the system and where I have a lot of friends, especially David Ortiz," Ramirez was quoted as saying on ESPNdeportes.com.

However, Ramirez told his agent, Greg Genske, that he wasn't aware of speaking to a reporter from ESPN Deportes, or any media member for that matter.

Perhaps Ramirez held a casual conversation with Enrique Rojas, who wrote the story for ESPNdeportes.com, but didn't know that Rojas was a reporter. Speculation has fueled so much of this latest Ramirez saga, in large part because the player has yet to declare his intentions in a public forum.

Until the ESPN Deportes article, there hadn't been a Ramirez quote in any publication since the Red Sox's season ended in early October.

Furthermore, even in light of the latest story, of which the accuracy could not be confirmed, Genske told Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that Ramirez was still open to being traded.

"If Boston is able to work out a trade with Baltimore or another team, Manny is still open to making a move," Genske told FOXSports.com.

Red Sox co-general manager Ben Cherington had no comment on the latest twist regarding Ramirez.

Early in this offseason, the Red Sox were having a hard time generating a proposal substantial enough to consider trading Ramirez, the American League's premier right-handed hitter of the last decade. But hope arrived on Dec. 8, when Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada announced that he was also looking for a change of scenery.

What better way for both teams to satisfy their disenchanted All-Stars than to trade them for one another?

The Red Sox and Orioles had been discussing the matter frequently over the last couple of weeks, but as of Thursday, the clubs couldn't agree to a package that was satisfactory to both sides. The Red Sox, according to several reports, have also offered up right-hander Matt Clement as part of the potential blockbuster.

There have also been rumblings that Ramirez would only agree to a trade to Baltimore if they extended his contract beyond the three years and $57 million he has left.

But if Ramirez indeed wants to stay in Boston, that issue would become moot.

"I'm going to take things easy and focus on my career," Ramirez allegedly told ESPNdeportes.com.

I think this is more crap from Mannys agent. The best thing manny could do is get rid of his agent. Even if he didnt know he was talking to a reporter, he still wants to be with the team.

It seems some people overeacted to his original comments. He never said he wanted to say, just that he wasn't going to be traded, which still might not be true. All this really changes is the fear that he won't show up to play if we don't trade him, which I don't think anyone really ever believed anyway. But would anyone really be surprised at anything Manny does at this point?

People overreact? In Boston? No way...

john is right..it's a lot of fuss and a not so subtle attempt to get attention.

I think he says a lot of s*** that is misunderstood becasue he says so liittle to the press.

If he said , " hey you, pass me some mustard". Then fans and the press would spend weeks talking about the ramifications. Did he mean Gulden's, I didnt know Manny liked mustard...He must hate boston, and like Sabrett hot dogs in new york--he wants to play for the Knicks , why does Manny hate ketchup. you know they read s*** in to the littlest burp.

I agree with my good friend John...manny is a ketchup hating hot dog loving red sox and will be through the entire contract.

Pass the mustard john.

Alexander, you're an idiot.

Anyways, moving on, Manny Ramirez will be here, and I am set to announce that I AM Ramirez' new agent. And upon the travesty to Sox fans set forth by Manny and his ex-agent we are here to give back. Ramirez will reportedly pay for season tickets for any member of http://www.talksox.com that is a true RED SOX fan, meaning of which, the Yankee trolls don't get s***.

And from there Ramirez will also keep his mouth shut and wallet open and will donate 50% left of his paychecks to local Boston area hospitals, quite simply because he makes to much.

And we hope by doing this that Manny Ramirez will return to the hearts of Boston fans.
