you're confusing me. You state how excuses are made when contracts expire, and then you expect the players to give a discount to the team. Why should a player give a discount to a team that makes excuses for their unwillingness to strongly persue re-signing the guy.

If you host a radio show, you're contract expires, and your station says things like "his show is boring, he isnt appealing to the target audience, etc. etc. etc." would you give them a discount and re-sign with them, or would you go to the station that was happy about adding you to their program roster??

Correct me if I am misunderstanding your point, and if so I appologize.

PLayers SHOULDNT be expected to take discounts. That is what I am saying. I am not mad any of them left, I was mad at the RedSox. For every Jason Varitek there is a Pedro, Damon, Vaughn, Clemens. Read all of my posts and you will see this. I have never once cursed Damon.

The Sox make exucses for not signing these players. People should realize its not the players wanting more money. Its the fact the Sox offfers are no where close to other offering teams.

We let these players walk, and then replace them with garbage. Its not like we let them go and make ourselves better. We in the end lose more by not resigning these players.

Off the top of my head Clemens was 10-5 in 1996, hurt half of the year.

edit...he was 10-13 with a 3.63 ERA. Not hardly bad if his team scored him runs. League average ERA in 1996 was 5.15.

the 3.63 ERA woulda put alarm bells in my head though. I dont remembver the Toronto contract but wasn't it the richest one for a pitcher at that point in the game? I'm not so sure I woulda pulled the trigger on a fireballer in his 30's coming off an injury. of course, had I known he would be 43 and still chucking 97MPH heat...

Babe, Bucky, Buckner, Boone

(Hated to do it, because I dont normally act like that around here, but he left me no choice, sorry)

Thank you. Had it not been for Bucky, Buckner and Boone, 2004 would not have been so sweet.

3.63 when the league average was 5.15? He wasnt injured, I was thinking about the 95 season. Not only did he go 10-13 with a 3.63, but in one of his last starts he struck out 20 Detroit Tigers.....What did he do after leaving Boston? Not much except going 21-7 with a 2.05 ERA in Toronto.

BTW Juan Guzman won the ERA title with a 2.93. Clemens 3.63 doesnt look so bad considering Guzman led the league. Clemens was 6th in the league in ERA, 2nd in H/9inn, 1st in K/9inn, 5th in Innings, 1st in K's, 4th in CG.

He was worth it.

yeah thats why I aint in management :D I thought he was done at that point though, that's my honest opinion. I dont think anyone expected him to do what he did after he left Boston

This FO should only be graded on post-2002 since that is the time they have been in control. So Clemens and Vaughn aren't in the conversation. Ok, so that means that they let Pedro and Damon walk. And, given the contracts offered to these two aging stars, letting them go was justified IMO.

Here's what it boils down to, now vs. the future. If you feel that the pieces are in place now and that they must not waste any chances at another title, then you are justified because Ramirez, Schilling, Nixon, and Varitek aren't getting any younger. If you feel that it is best to build a strong, young team that can go on a good 5+ year run, then you are justified as well because they have some seriously good young talent that is going to start contributing over the next 3 years.

It seems apparent, however, that the FO is reshaping the team to fit a mold it has in mind. Give this crew some credit. They came in, added a few pieces to an already good roster, and gave this city something it has wanted for over 80 years. I think they have earned the right rebuild the team as they see fit. Especially when the team they are putting together for the post-2007 timeframe is shaping up very nicely.
