if he cant close he cant start..I think he pushed himself to come back --once again, without being ready..I think he would best serve this team by healing first and playing when he is really ready and maybe drop few pounds along the way,.

There is a slim chance he can become a reliable starting pitcher anytime soon. It's pretty bad not having a closer, but it's even worse not having a go to number one bonified ace in your starting rotation, and right now, the Sox don't really have that in anyone. The Sox needed Schilling as a starter. If he did start, he wouldn't be choking down the stretch right now like Clement is and I think the Sox would have a bigger lead over the Yanks. But I'm not complaining because it is benefitting the Yanks and is great to see (esp. when Arod hits a game winning homer off Schilling with Vtek behind the plate :D ).

schilling is a starter not a closer. when he gets back in the rotation he will be fine, contrary to what you "yankee fans" think.

Ok, well his BAA is .313 right now. That isn't good no matter what pitching role you have.

He definately came back to early. He was way too out of shape. I think this is the Curt Schilling we are left with though. Nobody ever went through this kind of procedure so there is no timetable. Also, I have a feeling he put his career on the line knowing the circumstances.

I also believe many in the Sox organization were against the whole procedure which allowed him to pitch last season, which is why Dr. James Andrews was let go soon after the season came to a close last year.

I am optimistic that he will one day be the old Curt Schilling, however he is not in good shape, he is getting old, and he doesnt have the 94MPH fastball to set up his Split no more.

Well you know what, from what I have heard that 2004 ring was worth it to Red Sox fans. You guys got your 2004, isn't that all you wanted?
Posted

lol of course I didn't want to just settle with one in 1996, but I never said that that was the only ring I wanted the Yanks to get. Countless Red Sox fans said they would be content with a ring in 2004 and then be satisfied for the rest of their lives. The "Now I can die happy" kinda thing.

Ah how quickly the Yankee fan mentality takes over :)

You know that if you make inflamatory statements like that you're going to get a world of grief and aggravation ( and that's puting it nicely ). Is the only reason that you're here is to attempt to give grieve to this board ( if so it isn't going to work ) ? Or is it that you can't be accepted anywhere else ?

No I do post on another Yankees board. I wanted to come to a Red Sox board to see opinions that differ from my own. I think it makes for a better overall view on a subject, don't you? Besides, it wasnt meant to be inflamatory. Learn to take things you read with a little grain of salt. I'm just bringing that up because I have had to hear Red Sox fans go on and on about that one elusive ring, and that that would be enough for them in their whole lives.

nah its just the "New England Patriots die hard fans" type mentality ;)

Oh, how could I mix the two up? :dunno: I do like the Patriots, but that of course has nothing to do with Tom Brady. ;)

I found this hilarious

''I hate that golden boy image,'' Brady tells writer David Kamp. ''I don't look at myself that way at all! For me to believe I can't do anything wrong — I think that's all bull(expletive). I'm 27 years old, I go do the same (expletive) every 27-year-old guy does, I mean, I drink, I ... ''

''Search the Internet for porn?'' Kamp inquires.

''Everything,'' Brady declares, ''I am no different.''

I respect him a helluva lot more after that. I still hate him though, I'm a Jet fan.

lol that is pretty funny. Im not really a big football fan. I've been trying to get into it though. I have a Jets shot glass so I guess I'll root for them? I dunno, I'll see how this season goes then pick my favorite team.

It's a pretty easy pick...the Patriots.

I don't think its disrespectful to call things how they are. And right now, Schil is pitching like he is washed up. That's not to say he can't get it back, but right now I agree with his quote last night about costing his team games when he's tryin to "learn" a new position.

At the same time, with respect to Gagne, Cordero, etc., the last 2 mo. of the season is not the time to try throwing someone in the closer's role to inherit all the stress/pressure for a team that is defending WS champs, and fighting to insure they clinch the division. Do you really want to put a kid in that kind of position and risk crushing whatever confidence he might have? The time for experimentation is usually in the preseason, or at least early enough in regular season where it can't hurt you too much.

If Schil can't be effective in the rotation, he should just be sent down until he can be effective. IMHO, closing and starting are a completely different animal. As inconsistent and fragile Gagne was as a starter, he has been lights out as a closer (but it didn't happen overnight).

Typically, Schil would need an inning or two to settle down before he just cruised the rest of the game. Now for him to go into a role where every bad pitch is magnified because it usually costs the team a game is a huge gamble to step into. I'm not worried he is going to stink for 6 innings (he would be the first to advocate removing himself completely before then), but if it's still a case of getting his velocity and endurance back, then just keep him in the pen, but NOT as the closer. He could be brought in as either a spot starter or long relief until he felt good to actually go back to starting every 5th day.

Isn't it irionic how the Yankee fans just appear after they gain a game and start acting like their Peter Gammons, saying "Oh hes not fit for the closer role, I told you so..." Hindsight is 20-20 folks, where were you when this experiment started??? Nowhere on this board. Unless we use a Timlin, Papelbon, or a Delcarmen (hes got closer stuff) Schill's all we have and 9 for 11 in saves is getting the job done (albeit shaky when he comes in, he still has 9 saves).

OH, and YANKEESRULE welcome back, Its been almost a month...Where have you been???

FYI, I did say from day one I thought the idea was not only detrimental to Schilling, but to the Red Sox as well. Closers shouldn't have BAAs over .300. He should've been rehabbing himself to be a starter, and if he can't do that you shut him down the rest of the year.

Edit- also I don't think that is qualified as irony.

Keith Foulke will throw his fifth bullpen side session today, then throw a simulated game on Friday, when he'll pitch to Trot Nixon.

It is looking like a late August return is realistic.

2 blown saves in last 3 games, and even the middle game was trouble for him on 1 out there were men on 2nd and 3rd but Mo was able to get out of it, getting the next 2 batters to pop up--haha that would be something 3 straight blown saves

joe is playing every game like a playoff game--

I dont like to even second guess or think about what they do, but it seems to me he is overusing guys and will live to regret this startegy in september.

I love it, but it doesnt make sense to me and seems overly panicky.

It is panicky. It's like Joe has to make sure TanGorMo will work in the postseason by using them every day just to make sure. It's like a little a kid checking under his bed every five seconds to make sure the boogey monster isn't there.

Rivera had some bursitis or something; he didn't risk throwing in the offseason, and still it showed up in spring training. And problem is, Torre hasn't exactly used him in save situations.

Torre manages by the same ol' manual, and he can't make adjustments if something goes wrong with TanGorMo, which at this rate, with this workload, they will be rendered useless come postseason. If anything, he should find out if he can trust F-Rod, Proctor (heh?), Embree (mwahaha), and other relievers who've been shelved thus far, NOW, much less the frickin' postseason.

As far as the whole closer-starter-in-one thing, for every John Smoltz, there are two dozens of Eric Gagnes.

Wouldn't all of you Yankee fans love that?
