I think we should bring papelbon back and try him as the closer. The kid throws hard, locates well, and I definatly think he's capable of getting 3 outs a night.

Yeah Im sure it would be a good idea for the Devil Rays to try Papelbon as a closer, not the Redsox. You cant put a rookie on the mound to close out big ball games for the defending world champions. Thats WAYYY too much pressure.

He locates so well that he allowed 5 BB in 5.1 IP in his first start. Thats not good location, and that leads to blown saves.

Hate to break the news......Curt Schilling is not going anywhere. He is the closer and will be the closer until Foulke proves he can be useful. I think you all are forgetting how awful Foulke was. He was just pitiful. Curt is 9/11 in saves and we dont have any other options. Moving Timlin into the closers role makes no sense whatsoever. He is one of the best at doing what he does. We have no other options, and please don't say "Craig Hansen can do it" because he can't. Trust me, if Curt Schilling can't do it, neither can Hansen. We have to live with what we got.I hope Foulke comes back and it lights out, but until then Schilling is the closer. Please think back and remember how god awful Foulke was this season before deciding he will be a better option than Curt.

I agree. Not to mention how there was a public outcry " Don't bring Timlin in with men on base ". Well in many cases that is exactly when he must come in. Leave Timlin where he is. Although, we still have nine games left on this road trip we should do pretty well. We really should have blown out Detroit last night, we had enough opportunities ( in which case we wouldn't have needed to use Schilling ).

it was his debut, give him a break

I think it may be hansen time pretty soon

why isnt tito using delcarmen more often?

Delcarmen got sent down to make room for Papelbon. We won't probably see him again until September.

unfortunately, delcarmen is being sent back down to Triple A to make room for Papelbon. Personally Id rather see Remlinger get sent down, Delcarmen is a much better pitcher and can get actual outs for the Sox

Remlinger might be out of options ( probably is ).

First of all I just wanna say that you're a jackass. Looking at stats from someones first start in the league is a really s***** way to gauge their potential. Go look at Curt, or Petey's first start ... bet they didn't blow you away.

Can I ask you what great baseball knowledge you have that lets you know that Paps can't save a big game? Do you know him personally? Seen him play a lot? What? How do you know that someone can't do something unless you give them a shot? You think the Nats thought Chad Cordero would be lights out? How about the Stros and Brad Lidge? The Dodgers and Gagne? Were any of those 3 players big names before their first seasons closing? Had any had any pressure on them before? Are the 2(minus Gagne) better than Schilling is right now closing? How do you expect players to grow if you never give them a chance?

Look we have a very s***** closing situation right now. It's basically a choice between what may be a washed up closer, Foulke, what may be a washed up pitcher, Schilling, or a kid that could be a superstar, Paps. I think the choice is obvious. You have to at least give the kid a shot.

I'd rather not see Paps as a closer. He'll be a good starter for us in the future.

I want Schilling back in the rotation. He always made mistakes like these but now they're magnified because he's only in there for 1 or 2 innings instead of 5 where he can get himself out of jams.

And I want Foulke back in as a closer. I think if he's healthy, he'll be good and he appears to be healthy.

I have a question about Papelbon, that maybe some of you more astute than I can answer. After his first start, which looked quite promising for a rookie ( walks were a little high- nerves ? ). He was sent down. At the time it was reported and discussed here that he was sent to the bullpen per the FO because they wanted him ready as a closer. But now he's being asked to start again. So what is his use going to be ? A starter or a closer ? It's got to be having an effect on him.

I thought the organization was clear about their intentions for Papelbon. Their long term plan is to have him as a starting pitcher, but they wanted to limit his innings this season so they were working on putting him in the bullpen more to save his arm and prepare him to possibly help the team this season in relief.

Terry Francona mentioned after the game that the organization's known for a week that Papelbon will start this game, and he's been working out accordingly.

when i heard there would be an open start for today's game i thought right away either gonzo would get the start or Sox would call up their big prospect that he is, Jon Lester--But still happy nonetheless, i was at the game he pitched for the Sox against the Twins, he's got the stuff just needs to control location

That's what I thought was to save his arm due to innings pitched, but he's back as a starter. I was just wondering on their policy being consistent and what we as fans can expect / anticipate for September and the post season. Thanks

calling foulke and schills "washed up", thats going a little too far.

I didn't say they were. I said they very well could be. Foulke certainly looked washed up before he went on the DL, and it's certainly been a lot longer than 15 days since he's gone on the DL, anyone else worried about that?

About Foulke? No. They said right from the beginning that once he had the surgury he'd be out 6 weeks. Didn't he have that surgury in early July? That would put him back relatively soon based on the original expectations.

Let's just hope he's back to his 2004 self when he DOES come back.

Calling someone a "jackass" and being tough on an internet baseball website makes you look like a moron. And pathetic. Go play your star wars games kid.

Second of all, I go to school, right outside Portland, so I have seen him probally quite a few more times than you have, jerkoff. So yeah, I have seen him play alot.

Third, comparing a closer in washington, or houston, or LA to a closer in Boston is the dumbest comparison ive ever heard. You seriously want a rookie on the mound closing for the world series champs? I dont care how good he is, what happens when hes booed for blowing a save? Boston is the second, if not the largest market in baseball. What happens when Dickerson and Mustard criticize him? Can he handle the pressure? I dont know but sticking him in there a month and a half before the playoffs in the middle of a division title hunt doesnt make much sense to me.

Eat it clown.

Hate to say "I told you so".. wait no I don't. Told you so!

Schilling should have stayed in Triple A and got his stuff back to be a starter. If he can't do that, then he really is useless to this team this season.

You might be right, but we'll never know, because the circumstances drove a different senerio.

I'm not talking trash, I'm being honest. That's been my opinion on the matter. It has nothing to do with the Yankees gaining ground, its because Schilling should never have become a closer.

if he cant close he cant start..I think he pushed himself to come back --once again, without being ready..I think he would best serve this team by healing first and playing when he is really ready and maybe drop few pounds along the way,.
