The Red Sox have only held preliminary talks with agent Scott Boras on a deal for St. John's righthander Craig Hansen, but are pleased with the direction of the early negotiations.

In the days leading up to the draft, the Florida Marlins, with the 22nd overall pick, floated an offer of $2.8 million and an immediate major league callup, which Hansen suggested was insufficient. The Marlins then chose a high school pitcher from Houston, leaving Hansen to fall to the Red Sox at No. 26.

The Sox now know it will take somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million and a major-league contact to land Hansen. The club has never offered a major-league deal to a draft pick, but understands one will probably be necessary to get the power reliever signed.[/Quote]

It's not him that's the cocky ********, it's Boras.

But the cocky little ******** knew what he was doing when he decided to have Boras represent him.

Yeah he knew he'd be getting an agent that would net him the most money. But it's not him who decided the Marlins offer was insufficient, it was Boras.

If the Sox convert him into a starter a la Papelbon, they're just going to throw an assload of money at him so that a minor league deal is sufficient. If they see him as a closer, they'll give him the major league deal and around $3.5 million.

By the way, a major league deal doesn't mean that he has to be an active member of the team. It just means that he has to be on the 40-man roster and could be in Pawtucket, Portland, Wilmington or anywhere.

good luck with this kid guys, hes been dynamite all year down here and very hyped up in days prior to the draft, ur lucky he stuck around....the reason is probably Boras, the other teams didnt want a repeat of Jared Weaver/Stephen Drew all over again....anway, good luck signing him....he should be fun to watch

Exciting stuff, but time to be an administrator. :(

1. Moving to the minor league forum.

2. 26 to 6, please shorten your sig. We try to keep things to a 4 line maximum here, and it gets kind of ridiculous when signatures extend past the actual post. Thanks.

26 to 6, you numbnuts, I'd much rather take the following win from last October than some meaningless win five years ago:

Brad Lidge the 2nd is in our hands, so I think we should get him signed.

If he stays a closer, he will turn into Brad Lidge. But, they are seriously considering making him a starter, which I believe they should at least attempt.

Hansen closer

Negotiations are ''moving along" between the Red Sox and first-round pick Craig Hansen, and a deal could be struck within the next couple of weeks, according to a source involved in the talks. The Sox chose the St. John's fireballing closer with the 26th pick in the June draft.

The sides are believed to be talking about a four-year major league deal that would pay Hansen somewhere between $4 million and $4.5 million.

Hansen could offer the Sox bullpen help this season, but the source said his long-term future is as a starter.

Good call Zenny

Per this morning's Boston Globe.

Hansen soon?

General manager Theo Epstein wouldn't confirm a rumor that draft pick Craig Hansen was in Boston Friday to be medically evaluated, which, if accurate, could mean the team is approaching a deal with the former St. John's University closer who was rated No. 1 on at least one major league team's 2005 draft board.

Hansen fell to the Sox, picking at No. 26, largely because he was expected to be a tough sign. He has been, though Epstein sounded more optimistic yesterday than he did earlier in the week.

''We're making a lot of progress," said Epstein, who emphasized that there's no deal at this time.

Johnny Damon, who, like Hansen, is represented by superagent Scott Boras, said Hansen toured Fenway Park Friday with one of Boras's associates. The Sox are expected to make an exception by signing Hansen to a major league contract. He'd probably need to sign this month to have any chance to help the club this season. He'd most likely begin his pro career with Double A Portland.

You are so lucky to have Hansen. He will great for you guys one day.

yea tell me about it what a steal at 26, and to think the diamondbacks were considering him and Justin Upton and went with Upton, thats how highly touted he was. Also a Yankee scout was fired for passing up on him and taking a high school SS...which is the last thing we need right now seeing as how we got a SS...a very good one. Also Omar Minaya denied to comment on why the Mets passed up on him....too bad, this kid should be pitching in his hometown.

The yankees kinda redeemed themselves by drafting that Cox kid who was closing for Texas, i believe they signed him and according to scouts he has the potential to be a chad cordero, someone who gets called up to the bigs the year he was drafted, much like craig hansen will.

No, he isn't nearly as talented as Cordero or Hansen, or even Huston Street. He'll be up about this time next year.

has anyone actuslly seen hansen pitch and who good is he going to be?

I have. I live not far from St. John's college. He is going to be an absolute stud for the Sox bullpen. Think mid to high 90's fastball with pinpoint control, put-'em away slider, and extreme durability. Perfect pitcher's body and he has guts. He even made an emergency start for his team and went 7 innings and got the win.

Cox is overrated. He has the potential to be a good closer, but not in the same league as the Hansens, Devines, Corderos, and Streets. His breaking ball is nice but his control needs some work.

I was originally very disappointed with the draft of Henry, but his numbers thus far have been good and he has really good speed and has been slugging som XBH for our GCL affiliate. Within the next few years, he will be moved to the outfield where he projects to play pretty much any outfield position, he has the arm and the bat. Hansen would've been better for us because he would've added another set-up man to our arsenal very quickly, but Henry could turn out to be one of the absolute top outfield prospects with his athleticism and tools.

awesome craig has been signed to a 4 year $4 million contract, theo said odds are he could be with the red sox by next april

Good. If Hansen starts strong, I could see him called up in September, but probably just to get a taste of the majors. Then of course a Spring Training invite with a chance to win a job in the Sox bullpen next spring. It's expecting too much to ask this guy to be a contributer this season, he hasn't even thrown a pitch in pro ball!

I hope we do, it would be great.
