hmm maybe a sendup on Tuesday, and do I hope so much for them to make room by Remlinger getting DFA'd and chased out of the Boston city limits??

I thought was the stated plan. I'd pitch one or two times over the weekend , and if all went well, he'd be called up Tuesday. I'm really psched to see what he can do.

Craig Hansen is supposed to be better than Houston Street?? Holy s***. So if Papelbon, Lester, and Burnett came to Boston next year....who would be leaving??

I would almost like to see Lester get some time in Pawtucket first. Maybe he can play the role of Papelbon next year.

Today's Globe Notebook mentions today that the Sox are going to give Hansen a little more time in the minors and not call him up this week as previously reported.

That's good and bad. I feel like a kid that didn't get that special Christmass present, but I always know there's a birthday coming up. The FO knows more than us, so they must have their reasons.

They're going to call him up before August 31 so he can be eligible for the playoff roster, so it'll only be a week at the most.

Another 1.1 IP without giving up a run. Got touched for 2 hits and fanned one with no walks.

EDIT: He did allow an inherited runner to score.

Portland got swept today in the final game of a 4-game series with the Trenton Thunder, the Yankees AA team. Craig picked another inning up. He still has yet to allow a run. Today he faced 5 batters, but none were able to reach base by any other means than a fielding error. AA line to this point:

8.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K

I know it is a risk to bring him up now. But he unquestionably has the best stuff in the entire organization, and relief pitching is a major weak spot for the big league club right now. The FO's desire to protect young talent from the set-back of struggling in the bigs is bordering on coddling at this point. I'd hate to have a talent like this spending the rest of the year dominating in the minors while I'm stuck doing the "Remlinger please don't blow it" dance every third night.

There's got to be something to do with roster moves ( 25 man or play-off ) or possibly contract ( incentives ? ). Because clearly he's shown that he's ready to be moved up.

i know sox are giving remlinger as much chances as they can, but still his time with the Red Sox has an ERA of like 16.53. And what are they going to do with Roberto Petagine, its been awhile since he last played for the Sox.

Interesting question. He swings a nice bat, and I'd say he's about equal ( maybe a little lower ) than Millar defensively. Down side he can play another position and he's another left hand bat.

Another appearance tonight:

1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

He inherited a runner on 2nd with 2-outs. The first batter he faced reached on a error. The next hit a soft single to center, and the runner was out at the plate. The next inning he got a groundball out, gave up a line-drive single, got a ground ball for the double play.

8 appearances in AA:

9.2 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K, 1.04 WHIP, .243 OBA, 9.32 K/9

EDIT: They changed the box score on this one, scoring the error a hit. WHIP and OBA have been adjusted.

also, We have no reliever who can be effective against lefties and righties except Timlin, who is supposed to be our closer.

Well Paps is in the pen, and as a starter I'd certainly hope he can get righties and lefties out.

I don't care if we lose rem, but i do like delcarmen and hansen in the pen a whole lot more then i like papelbon in the pen, and i like papelbon over arroyo and i love arroyo in the pen

In today's column wrapping up last nights game, Gordon Edes writes:

Top prospect Craig Hansen, whose much-heralded arrival was expected at any moment to shore up the Sox bullpen, instead has been shut down indefinitely with a tired arm. Hansen, the No. 1 draft pick from St. John's, has not pitched for Double A Portland since Friday night. If the fatigue, much like what a pitcher goes through in spring training, does not go away, the Sox may have no choice but to shut him down for the rest of the season.

I'm not sure what to think of this, but I don't think any long-term injuries should be risked.

This definately isn't good news. I don't think it was the total pitch count for this year though. Since he pitched in the Cape League last year and he didn't this year. But I totally agree, let's not risk any chance of screwing this kid up.

He could be all right. He had a semi-long layoff between college and his professional debut. He's only been throwing for about 3-4 weeks with the Sox, and it's typical for pitchers to experience what feels like a tired arm at about that point in spring training. Hence, the spring training referrence in the column. I do feel that, given his potential, the Sox will be very cautious with their decision making.
