bronson can be a good pitcher, but doesnt have as much potential as burnett. They're both 28 so theres no issue with age. Arroyo loves it hear and is liked in the clubhouse so thats a positive. But i think he'll continue to struggle because hitters are use to him now and he relies to much on his inconsistent curveball.

well really win/loss record is out the window since Arroyo's career ERA Record is at 4.49, with AJ's at 3.80, and Elias Sports Bureu indicated Florida Marlins give him on average 5 runs of support or less dating back to 1998. I like Arroyo a lot but tek is right that arroyo's control is not always on the mark, and doesnt do that well at home compared to on the road. And this is what baseball is and what will always be like in the business and stats sense. Maybe with the Florida Marlins having a pitcher's ballpark, that could certainly turn things around for Arroyo. and AJ will have a team that has slugging power while he goes and sits on the bench.

BALTIMORE SUN

Though a team source said the club has been discussing for a couple of weeks now moving Ponson to the long-relief role in the bullpen and bringing up Maine, his loss would still leave a void in the rotation.

The hole will not be filled by Florida Marlins starter A.J. Burnett, who is not being courted by the Orioles anymore because they feel that he'll play for them for only two months and then sign a lucrative free-agent deal elsewhere. One industry source described the proposed deal of prospect Hayden Penn, outfielder Larry Bigbie and relievers Jorge Julio and Steve Kline for Burnett and third baseman Mike Lowell as "stone cold dead."

If they get Nevin, the Orioles would have no place for Lowell, whom the Marlins have been insistent on packaging with Burnett. An industry source said that the Orioles plan to be aggressive in their search for a starter before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and that they could offer a package similar to the one that they extended to the Marlins for Burnett. However, they'd prefer not to include Penn.

Some names that could be attractive to the Orioles are Pittsburgh Pirates starter Kip Wells, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Jeff Weaver and the Cleveland Guardians' Kevin Millwood.

is the red sox/marlins trade dead? i have not heard much about it...

I don't think it's completely dead. I've heard some rumblings that the teams are still talking.

Nice and quiet, that's the way I like it. I don't think ANYONE was talking about the actual Nomar trade last year at this time.

ya it reminds exactly of last year

heres a story from a chicago newspaper:

Deal for Burnett could include McCarthy, Marte

By Dave van Dyck

Special to the Tribune

July 24, 2005

The White Sox, who already have the best pitching staff in the American League, may be close to landing the best pitcher available in the trade market, Florida's A.J. Burnett.

With less than a week to go before the trading deadline, the White Sox are in serious discussions about a deal that would net Burnett for minor-league starter Brandon McCarthy and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte, according to industry and team sources.

With Baltimore apparently out of the running for Burnett, the White Sox have become the favorite, although Boston remains strongly involved, those sources say.

But before the deal can be consummated, two matters would have to be resolved:

The White Sox would have to have 72 hours to negotiate a new contract with the 28-year-old Burnett—who can become a free agent after the season. General manager Ken Williams has said he will not give up young players in return for a 60-game "rental" player.

While Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, could not be reached for comment Saturday, one source close to the situation was told Burnett would not sign with the White Sox, even though they have the best record in baseball.

The White Sox would need a left-hander to replace Marte in the bullpen, possibly Alan Embree, who was designated for assignment by Boston on July 19 . Other possibilities would be Steve Kline, just released by Baltimore, and Seattle's Ron Villone.

Williams would not comment on trade rumors, "because with every word it does injustice to the guys [on the team now] who are out there busting their tails every day.

"The component you look for [in the] market is pitching, and our pitching has been solid," he said.

It is not clear which starter the Sox would eliminate from their rotation and whether they could trade him. The most logical candidate for demotion is Jose Contreras, who has some trade value, and, in fact, had been mentioned on some rumor mills as going to Florida instead of McCarthy.

While one source insisted the Burnett trade was very close to being made, another said money could be an eventual issue.

Burnett makes $3.65 million this season and reportedly is seeking a four-year deal worth at least $40 million, a deal similar to that given Carl Pavano, his former teammate, by the Yankees.

However, Burnett, who is scheduled to start for the Marlins on Sunday in San Francisco, has a 43-44 career record and is 6-6 with a 3.65 ERA more than two calendar years removed from elbow ligament replacement surgery.

The Red Sox are believed to be ready to trade young starter Bronson Arroyo and others for Burnett, a package that may not be as good as the White Sox's, but they may have a better chance of signing him. It is believed neither team is far enough along in negotiations with Florida to ask the commissioner's office for a 72-hour signing window.

Recently, with Burnett seemingly headed to Baltimore, with White Sox closer Dustin Hermanson slowed by a sore back and with the White Sox staff leading the league in ERA, talk has been of trading for a reliever. But Williams' theory is to improve as much as he can when he has a chance, and he apparently likes Burnett enough to let go of top pitching prospect McCarthy and that rarest of baseball commodities, a lefty reliever.

"I told Kenny as long as I'm manager, I want good pitching," manager Ozzie Guillen said before his White Sox met the Red Sox. "But that doesn't mean Kenny is going get [Roger] Clemens and Burnett. … These guys have been doing a tremendous job for me, so I can't say we're going to need that because these 25 guys are busting tail for me."

Obviously, Guillen and Williams have coordinated their speeches. But, also obviously, they both want to upgrade the pitching staff for a long playoff run.

This weekend is a key one for Saturday starter Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and Sunday starter Contreras, if only because the trading deadline is next Saturday and poor efforts could intensify a search for a starter.

"I don't look at it that way," pitching coach Don Cooper said when asked about "key" starts. "I don't put much credence in any of the names thrown around in newspapers, because I'm not smart enough to concentrate on people we don't have. If something were to change, then we would refocus.

"Through 95 games, we have the best record in baseball and our starting staff probably matches up good in all of baseball. So I don't think we're in any urgent need of doing anything. Rumors are very interesting, but from my end that's all they are."

just saw AJ pitch today and I like him a lot more now.

7.1 and 1 unearned run. He looked awesome.

He also hit a HR. So if we ever need him in dire pinch hit situations...

I'm so tired of hearing this guys name. I wish something would just happen already, or everyone would just shut the hell up about it till it happens.

EDIT: Not telling you guys to shut up ... talking to ESPN

I want something to happen soon. Guess I'll get my wish since we're upon the last week.

yup yup..im so excited/scared/anxious.

there has been so much uproar about the three way deal and such that it's hard to tell what may really go down. its a tough situation and it's difficult to put yourself in theo's place. i know my biggest deal is that it will be hard to scarifice some of our good players (or at least I think so) for our pitching rotation. It needs to be done but ill miss whoever we drop. I wish they'd just do it though. It's starting to confuse.

I'll give my two cents here:

now they are talking about arroyo and sanchez for lowell and burnett. I say do this deal ONLY if Burnett is willing to sign an extension.

But I definetely do not like the idea of trading Sanchez! If what we need is pitching the last thing we want to do is give away our pitchers that aren't good now but will be great later. Maybe Delcarmen, but if Sanchez is as good as everyone says he is I hope Theo wouldn't let him go.

I think Florida should be happy to get Arroyo a guy they could have control of for a while. On the other hand, they would lose Burnett to free agency anyway. I think a straight swap would be fair, but if we had to, we could add another prospect that is not as far along as Sanchez. Theo has to pull off some magic here.

I think Burnett would be an upgrade over Arroyo because Burnett is a strikeout pitcher. Guys from the NL that don't strike guys out seem to have trouble in the AL. Examples of successful transitions were Pedro Martinez, Schilling, Clement. Guys from the NL that were not good strikeout pitchers include Suppan, Pavano, Wright.

I just hope Theo does not give up too much.

i think we can trade 1 and only one of our top ten prospects. Burnett hopefully would be able to sign an extension. I also just heard on the radio his fastball was clocked at 104 mph once in his 4th start this year. (dont no if this is true, but is interesting)

he is a strikeout/groundball pitcher which is important at Fenway.

on WEEI, it was reported that Theo is starting to play hardball after Bronson's performance, using that breaking ball in abundance which a number of times he hung it up there for guys to hit. It could be a deal now of Bronson, Sanchez, and Brandon Moss to counter with the prospect White Sox are offering.

mcarthy is 22 years old. is 3-7 with an ERA of 5.20 on their AAA team

anibal is 20 years old .is 1-1 with an era of 1.23 on AA and was 6-1 with an era of 2.42 in A

i also think arroyo would be more important to the Marlins than damaso marte or jose contreras

I can't believe you guys have been talking about this since before Christmas. I've heard so much about this trade that I'm starting to think it's not happening. 9 times out of 10 when a trade is talked about this much, for this long, it doesn't happen.

ESPN’s Peter Gammons said on Boston sports radio station WEEI 850 AM on Sunday that Burnett would prefer to be dealt to Boston than anywhere else.

However, it appears the White Sox are getting serious about the pursuit of Burnett. According to several published reports Sunday, Chicago has packaged top prospect Brendan McCarthy along with reliever Damaso Marte in attempt to pry the righthander from the Marlins. One potential snag, according to the Boston Globe, is that the White Sox reportedly will not go through with that deal without signing Burnett to an extension.

Burnett on possibly being traded-

"I'm kind of both ways with it," Burnett said Sunday about signing an extension before the winter. "If it's the right team and the right place, then why not? But I'm still pretty keen on seeing what's going on in the off-season. But, like I said, if it's the right place and the right team, absolutely."
