He's goin to the O's. Its basically a done deal. The story is all over the internet. We need some serious help with O's now getting Burnett.

I will take a healthy Curt Schilling in any matchup against the Yanks or Baltimore (tough call vs. Halladay in Toronto) but the Orioles depth and history against us makes the rest of the matchups a tough one. Injuries are a problem...but I dont think he had a lot of injuries just a bad one....

I'll be honest....Burnett, Bedard, and Lopez scare me

If Schilling were healthyy, he'd be starting. If we believe he'll be back in Sept. I'll take Schilling over Burnett any day.

PHOENIX — Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett said Monday he expects to be traded before his scheduled start tonight.

Sources close to the talks indicate a deal, likely with Baltimore, is nearing completion, although a three-way trade between the Marlins, Orioles and Pirates surfaced late Monday.

In the three-way deal, the Marlins would acquire pitcher Mark Redman from Pittsburgh, along with Orioles pitchers Hayden Penn and Jorge Julio and outfielder Larry Bigbie. In return, the Marlins would send Burnett to Baltimore and Mike Lowell to Pittsburgh.

Burnett was asked Monday if he thought he'd be a member of the Marlins tonight.

"Do I think? No,'' he said. "But I'll be ready if I am.''

Any deal with the Orioles will include Lowell, whose price tag has scared away several teams. Lowell is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $25.5 million, and the Marlins likely will be responsible for some of the money. The Marlins, according to league sources, spoke with Toronto and the White Sox about a Burnett/Lowell package, but neither team was willing to take Lowell.

The Orioles on Monday not only were figuring out how much of Lowell's contract they can absorb, but also their chances of signing Burnett long term. Burnett will be a free agent after the season.

Lowell said he was told, "the talks are for real,'' by has agent, Seth Levinson.

Marlins manager Jack McKeon is laughing off an ESPN report that he could be fired, although one Marlins player said Monday that the team senses McKeon's job is in jeopardy.

"I've been through it so many times it doesn't bother me any more at all,'' McKeon said before Monday's game with Arizona. The Marlins entered the game having lost six of seven games. "I go out and do the best I can, if they don't want you, then fine with me.''

Marlins General Manager Larry Beinfest joined the team in Arizona late Monday. Owner Jeffrey Loria was with the team during the weekend but did not travel to Arizona.

At least one Orioles player was told to be prepared to pack, according to one source. In a straight-up deal with Baltimore, the Marlins would receive Penn, who recently was returned to Class AA; relievers Julio and Steve Kline and Bigbie.

In the three-way deal, Pirates would send first baseman Daryle Ward to Baltimore, and the Orioles also would acquire Marlins Class-AAA outfielder Eric Reed. The Marlins would be responsible for a large portion of Lowell's contract, which has $21 million remaining through 2007.

The Red Sox have offered a package that would include starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo but have fallen behind Baltimore. Boston, according to one source, proposed a three-way deal with San Diego that was turned down by the Marlins.

"I know it's moving forward,'' a source close to the talks said about a trade. "I can't imagine they believe Burnett would perform like they expect him to (tonight).''

The Burnett talks were on the players' minds Monday, especially Burnett's. He was asked if all the reports were a distraction.

"It is,'' he said. "There's a possibility you could have two teams you could be focusing on in one day. You still have to do things to take your mind off of it. I don't answer my phone (except for his wife, agent and mom and dad). My phone has been ringing and ringing.''

Burnett has pitched like he's been distracted of late. In his past three starts he has allowed 15 runs in 15 1/3 innings. His is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA this season.

Lowell and Burnett both were in the clubhouse. Lowell related a story from 2003 in which he was told a trade with the Cubs was a done deal.

"I'm pretty much at peace with whatever happens,'' Lowell said.

Lowell told The Post on Sunday that he's not surprised he's the subject of trade rumors. "I'm not putting up numbers to the contract that I'm making,'' he said.

Lowell was hitting .227 with four home runs and 36 RBI entering Monday's game

Hold The Phone: This trade may fall through

The trade that would send pitcher A.J. Burnett from the Marlins to the Orioles hinges on whether the Orioles are willing to take high-salaried third baseman Mike Lowell, according to two sources.

The Pirates were invited into the deal with the Marlins and Orioles hoping they would take Lowell and the two clubs would combine on paying a portion of the $21 million still remaining on his contract. But a Pirates source said the club has no interest in an aging, high-priced third baseman, especially when the organization is building for the future.

So now the Orioles are forced to figure out a way to acquire Burnett without having to take on Lowell, which is a Marlins condition of any deal. So the two sides were no closer to hammering out a deal, and executive vice president Jim Beattie didn't offer much insight.

"I have absolutely nothing to say," Beattie said.

Meanwhile, left fielder Larry Bigbie, believed to be involved in the deal, did not play for the second consecutive game. Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said there was nothing to Bigbie missing two straight games.

"We were going with the same lineup as we did [on Monday] and we won," Mazzilli said. "That's it. Don't read between the lines."

Bigbie, reliever Jorge Julio, and pitching prospect Hayden Penn are speculated to be headed to Florida for Burnett and Lowell.

Burnett made his scheduled start on Tuesday at Arizona, while Lowell was in the lineup for the Marlins at third base.

Well, it's about damn time the Pirates make a good decision. I didn't really understand their interest in Lowell or Bigbie considering neither of them are an upgrade.

I don't think the deal has anything to do with Mueller going to the twins. I still don't think we want Lowell....but I could be way wrong.* We'll see...

It is interesting though that we haven't heard that it's a done deal yet with Baltimore. Makes you think it's not so close after all and we might still be in it..

Marlins, Orioles still puzzling over trade scenarios

PHOENIX · A.J. Burnett made his scheduled start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Change the day, opponent and location and the same question remains: Will Burnett make his scheduled start Sunday against the Giants in San Francisco?

According to two baseball sources, that may hinge on whether the Marlins and Orioles can determine what to do with Mike Lowell. The Orioles are reticent about taking Lowell as part of any Burnett trade unless one of two things happens:

The Marlins can take back right-hander Sidney Ponson, who is due $10 million in 2006, the final season of a three-year, $22.5 million deal. Or they can pick up a significant portion of Lowell's remaining contract. Lowell is signed through 2007 and owed about $21 million, including this season.

Problem is the Orioles don't want Lowell and the Marlins don't want Ponson. Lowell doesn't fit into the Orioles' lineup considering they have no plans to move Melvin Mora from third. Adding Burnett without trading Ponson would give the Orioles an extra starter.

Ponson has a limited no-trade clause, but the Marlins are not among the 10 teams to which he cannot be traded.

"[General Manager] Larry [beinfest] said absolutely no to Sidney Ponson," one source said. "It might happen without Lowell."

In a scaled-back version of the deal, the Marlins could send Burnett and Triple-A left-hander Matt Perisho to the Orioles for right-hander Jorge Julio, pitching prospect Hayden Penn and left-hander Steve Kline.

For the Orioles to take Lowell, chances are the Marlins would have to pick up no less than half of the remaining $21 million.

"The Marlins should jump on that," one of the sources said. "Where are they going to get two good arms that they're going to have under contract for a long time? To get Penn and Julio, [the Marlins] are the ones who should be nervous the Orioles are going to go somewhere else."

Should the two teams reach an agreement, the Orioles will request a 72-hour negotiating window to try to work out an extension with Burnett. The Orioles may be willing to go through with a deal even if they don't lock up Burnett, who is eligible for free agency after this season.

Reports surfacing Monday of the Pirates being involved in a three-team deal with the Marlins and Orioles that would have brought left-hander Mark Redman back to South Florida apparently were overstated, according to one team official with knowledge of the discussions.

The Blue Jays and White Sox could jump back in if the Marlins decide to trade Burnett independently of Lowell.

I think there is a good chance this falls apart....this trade is too involved and the Orioles havn't thought it through with the money.

If it takes one more wrong turn Theo could jump right in and make a steal......we would have to take Mike Lowell BUT.....if we took some of his money maybe we could throw Lowell and something else toward MINNESOTA for Romero???????

the Orioles are giving up like 5 of their players for star pitcher Burnett and dud 3rd baseman mike lowell, this what they always do during trades giv up abundance of players for one or 2 players in return. they will have burnett, but still lowell will be another sosa on the bench and they will be losing two great relievers of Jorge Julio and Steve Kline

If the deal gets done....I'm having a few doubts....its real complicated and the Orioles seem to be backing down a little cause I think they realize how much they are giving up and how much money they are taking on in return

a three way deal made more sense cause it spreads out money.....this deal with the Orioles never made sense to me in the first place...I think im partially hoping it falls apart cause Burnett is sick

remember got some men they can easily trade away with as in kelly shoppach, abe alvarez and the now defunt alan embree

yeah thats right, would florida be interested in embree, they said they would like a reliever

I would like to save shoppach and alvarez for a potential wagner trade....am i dreaming?

I think you may be. Curt has been very solid in his last few outings. I think they're going to stick with him until Foulke is back. If Foulke comes back strong then you send Schill into the rotation and bring Wade into the bullpen. If Foulke is still garbage when he gets back then you just leave Schill as the closer.

I really don't think Wags is an option anymore.

Billy Wagner's contract ends this season and phillies are playing well to not be called off from playoff chances. Im thinking maybe boston could try and swoop up wagner in the offseason if not taken then of course. And Im very happy for Curt, i stood by their decisions and knew right away him as a closer would be good option for boston instead of over-using timlin. In 4 relief appaearances: 4 innings pitched, 1 Save, 3 Hits, 2 Runs, 5 Ks, and no walks--plus his ERA has lowered some from 8.15 to 7.48, and is bound to drop to Curt type numbers
