A Realistic Look at the 2026 Red Sox: Part I
drewski6 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Anthony will prob DH 200 at-bats Masa will prob DH 100 at-bats Casas (if not traded) will prob DH some at-bats Contreras will Romy will There will be times when someone is too banged up to play the field but can DH , it can be anybody Paredes or Suarez or whoever we get will prob factor in And DUran will as well, but it wont be like 85% of our DH at bats. I doubt it will even be 50% becaus I think that more than 50% of the season, somebody will be hurt. -

1. You underestimate how much energy RA and even Abreu will regain DH'ing a day. In some parks, its a tiring jog from the dugout to the corner OF spots. Even once. DOing that 10/night all week and you wont be fresh as a daisy. SOmeone like Roman who is trying to still develop his hitting , you are not helping him succeed by keeping him tired 2. Your template for perfect health is useless. The injuries will come and theyll keep coming 3. Even if there wasnt an injury all year, no way all these players are getting this many at-bats. -

Outside of maybe the first month, there will be multiple injuries and who plays where will depend on the injuries (as well as slumps, rest days, handedness) Right now, our defensive alignment is: it depends on who is pitching for htem, who is injured, who is hot, who is not.... If 2 guys get hurt for the beginning of the season but come back mid season, then 2 different guys get hurt, the defensive alignment will shuffle and continue to shuffle Duran will play some DH, so will alot of other players at various points in the season. Duran may have more DH at bats than anyone but it wont be a huge amount. When everyone is healthy (whch will be rare) most likley youll have a DH rotation, that will be Roman at lest as often as Duran and sometimes Cedanne will be infield (but not a ton). WE will use many different defensive alignments, and its silly to stress on it right now cuz injuries will change it, and thats why versatility is in and old school mentality of every player has a position and nobody moves around and nobody platoons - theres a reason thats gone "old school" -

I think its cute that youve decided that Duran is the DH and operate on a basis that accepts that as fact. -
Red Sox sign Ranger Suarez. 5 years $130 Million
drewski6 replied to Jasonbay44's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
They say anything but the defense is already improved with Contreras, and I wouldnt hate E Suarez, hes not as bad defensively as you are making him out to be. Hes not going to play soccer with ground balls, as he wouldnt have so many games played at 3b if he was that incompetent. Hes also more athletic than he looks. Cuz he looks kind of grungy with a pot-belly. -

the best move they made at the deadline: not trade duran the best move theyve made this offseason: not trade duran -
Red Sox sign Ranger Suarez. 5 years $130 Million
drewski6 replied to Jasonbay44's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Not to imply that I hate what theyve done, there was always a point where we would audible to "build a dynamo" pitching staff in lieu of fixing the offense because the bats out there werent particularly plentiful and of course Schwarber, ALonso, and Bregman all have at least 1-2 red flags. And Im not excusing not getting tier 2 bats when we have 0 tier 2 (or tier 1 bats) but I am saying there was always a point where you are like "crap" need a plan b and building a dope staff isnt a terrible one. Also, the hitting/positional player mix isnt complete (I hope). ANd they did bring in Contreras and keep Duran (lol) -

Im not talking about trading Crochet. ANd Im a believer in young pitching over young hitting because I think the more times a pitcher faces a hitter the more time it favors the batter. I agree dont punt on pitching (or defense) but maybe secure a few very good hitters when you have 0 before pushing talented youngsters out of your rotation because [insert cliche] -

Paredes simply makes too much sense 1. Hed be our best hitter 2. Hes not studly defensively, but hes versatile which allows us to move him around 3. He doesnt seem too expensive $$ wise or prospect wise I know some dream about someone younger or a better defender, but at this point, we need the cheap hitting -

for a young 5 WAR prospect you make room if the prospect cost is affordable, but I think in this case it wont be. It would be like Tolle and Mayer, and Im honestly not sure even then. Trading him would represent a hard reset and even if you are hard resetting hes too young and too good. -

RI's adopted son and Classical High School (Providence, RI) grad Jeremy Pena? You eat those words! The only RI'er we bash round here is Paul Konerko Pena, Rocco Baldelli, and Mikey King are off limits! -

altuve gets 15 games off, correa does, walker does. thats 45 games against righties. one of them will get hurt at some point, so thats another 14-45 games. plus he plays against every lefty. Hes not going to sit against every righty, and if he were, his projected games played wouldnt be 95, it would be 45. Still 95 is too low.- 382 replies

if everyone is getting 140 games, then theres a lot of games to super-sub in for. Paredes may be a weak side platoon in the outfield vs lefties, but he would also be a supersub against righties. Maybe not plan a at a position for any position against righties, but hes playing in more than 100 games for me. I embrace platoons, nights off, versatility, shuffling, flexibility. Im new school.- 382 replies

I dont work in these absolutes, i believe in rotations. but some games christian walker rides the pine, some days altuve plays outfield, some days i do other things, but im not keeping paredes on the bench more than i would any other 125 wRC+ to prevent me from moving guys around. i move guys around.- 382 replies

Congrats, youve made an excellent point about why plan A is not to make Cedanne an end to end full time second baseman You know what mike tyson says about a plan? there will be injuries, guys will move around, unexpected things will happen the chance that cedanne plays 20 (or more) games at 2b next year is not 0 nor it is near 0%, its prob like 35% the chance that he plays more than 5 games at 2b next year is like 75% The chance that all guys play whatever position you think they are best for at this moment, and stay there all season is 0.001% plans change when injuries punch you in the mouth. versatility is good. its a bad bet to rule out him playing in the infield. long season and we have a lot of outfielders. -

and i do agree that bad projected games played (in romans case) made me compare apples to oranges (not checking romans games played) I 2x checked cuz notin said hes currently penciled in for weak side platoon so i went to check his projected games and saw less than 100 and thought thats prob 100% against lefites but 50% against righties so not pure platoon but obvs platoonish so then i was like wow, well, thats even worse (and saw no red sox were ranked in the top 31 and paredes was) but i didnt think to check red sox players game played projected cuz i thought maybe notin was right on the platooning and thats why paredes gp was so low so sorry notin, im back to thinking no way paredes is anything of a platoon, because you find a way to get that bat in. If it was 105 wRC+ thats one thing, but 125 is a "no bench" unless theres splits and its only like 100 against righties (which if its me, i prob still play) but im a bat first kinda guy. but yes, these i agree. Need paredes. his wrc+ would be best based on zips projections and even though im losing faith in these projections based on their low games played projections - i still think that says something. like if someone leads the league in strikeouts and youre like well theres contributing factors for example he has noodlebats around him so hes not going to take a walk and he always has the green light, im like okay maybe that explains some of it but you cant context away dead last. im losing faith in the calculation, but hed be #1 on sox in wrc+ so this trade needs to happen. ANd if the formula is bad and romans wrc+ should be higher because they are not projecting enough at-bats for roman...then great. But that would make paredes second and still a must get.- 382 replies

their formula isnt taking enough into account. they are prob weighing last years games played heavily or last 3 years, but its not valid for roman. 1. it skews his expected games played because his lower games played last year was partly due to him not being established and obviously hes not starting 2026 in aaa also sure got hurt last year but thats not enough data for me to consider him so injury played that 111 starts making sense as an objective best guess to games played- 382 replies

romy is hitter depth against righties, but pretty far down on the list I think. romy is not hitter depth against lefties, hes a featured part of our lineup and a massive contributor. I dont care about ideal defensive alignment. I care about hitting the ball. I believe in playing your 9 best hitters and if you cant make that work - you dont have enough versatility. But we have plenty of versatility so there is no reason why we shouldnt play the best hitters. Im not sure how i feel about romy hitting against righties. Last year i wanted it, then got it, and was sorry that i asked for it. MVPs if the season started now lineup has cedanne batting second. So theres room in our lineup vs righties for romy to steal a spot. It may even be cedannes.- 382 replies
