    They could have carried an extra position player, actually 2 because of the double header. Generally you carry either 4 of 5 bench position players on a 26 man roster but nobody ever seems to go 5 (anymore). Id bring it back, especially in the playoffs with all the off days. But pitching nerds yell at me. THE GAME IS WON AND LOST WITH PITCHING!!! PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING!!!!! ALL THE MONEY ON PITCHING!!! MORE PITCHING!! NO SUCH THING AS ENOUGH PITCHING And Im just like : 5 man bench. Fight me.

    There are loose plans but the real plan is to stay flexible and nimble.

    The budget matters but not in the way that we frequently assume. All the they will spend up to this amount = junk. They stay conscious of the expenditure, but again everything is fluid. They may say we want to stay under this line, but then throw it out if they see opportunity. Some fans want a finite amount becuase then it becomes a fun exercise to try to build a team under a max and it causes us to pick and choose and it facilitates good debate. End of the day, its a forum exercise. The plans are loose. Because so much can change and so much does. THe budgets exist, but they are also loose. They spent more this offseason than most of us thought. And those of us who assumed they would chase max efficiency were wrong and those of us who assumed they would be cheap (other end of hte spectrum) were also wrong. Income vs Expenditure is considered but when it comes to FA decisions and taking on salary in trades, its always case by case. They didnt ever have a hard stop and were like "if we can get a team to take on 4m of masa, we can spend 6m on a RP and not 2"

    It doesnt make much sense to me, I think the gist of Joes conspiracy theory is that they sent gasper down, knowing they would IL contreras 1.5 days later and call gasper up then. The issue is that they played Contreras in the mean time. I dont think they would play Contreras on Sunday knowing they would DL him on Monday and then be able to call Gasper back up then. I think the simple explanation is that they sent Gasper down because they view him as a platoon DH and considered him the weakest link. Now I dont agree with that. But I also dont think theres like 5D chess going on that includes playing hurt players.

    offense looks good for 2027. YOu account for injuries by having 8 good hitters with at least 6 of them who are good defenders at multiple positions, so you have hitting depth and can plug in serviceable dudes but the replcement comes from other starters. For example lets say next year abreu is hitting 3rd and then gets hurt and we bring up cambell. Thats decent positional depth, but I think if you want to fancy yourself a deep team, this doesnt necessarily just mean that you can plug in a serviceable fielder but also that you have someone hitting 5th, 6th who is as good as most teams have hitting 3rd. So you have both fielding coverage and lineup spot coverage.

    The depth of this red sox team might be its strength. Individual players stock goes up and down as seasons unfold. Right now, Contreras is heading to DL, and we have the luxury of replacing him with Gasper as our cleanup hitter (not sure if he will play 1B) while we let Contreras get healthy. This is one of the reasons why I dont think you chase max efficiency and try to have ultra-defined roles. I like having versatility and coverage and being able to mix and match when guys slump or get hot and need to be worked in or someone gets hurt or someone gets back from injury.

    If Jones hits the lefties the way he has been and Duran gives us his 2025 OBP + 2026 power and playing decent defense when hes out there , and we get 2025 Anthony - more than okay. Significantly more than okay.

    I had forgotten about the 10 day rule, that must be a newer thing cuz we use to use i-95 providence to pawtucket to expand our depth and just move guys down who werent avaialable and move guys up when we needed innings and maybe do some position player shuffling too. Prob put some parameters around it cuz league felt teams were exploiting something (like the 10 day rule). Good point, good point

    When covering hockey, NESN has a seventh player of the year award. Its supposed to go to a non-star who exceeded expectations and became a fan favorite. In baseball, I guess you could call it the 27th man award.....Regardless, who would you give the award to on the Sox? A non star who exceeded expectations and became a fan favorite. Sogard? Gasper? Monasterio? Tolle? (May not qualify as his prospect pedigree may disqualify him) Bennett? Other?

    Or have him pitch game 1 tomorrow, then send him down, and immediately activate roman/story for game 2. No one is coming of the IL and playing both games in a double header anyways.

    Why not tonight? Last time out, he pitched 2 innings. Hes rested. Swap him and Sandoval, send Bello down tomorrow, Sandoval replaces him in tomorrows game.
