  1. Im not even sure theres such a thing as a second baseman anymore.
  2. they are not rigidly slating one starter/position, they are keeping versatility and prioritizing flexibility.
  3. This was better than the argument I was going to come up with that its fine, so Ill just hop on this. Its fine. Its all fine.
  4. some most guys can play multiple positions and be fine.
  5. Or Devers pushes Bregman to 2b
  6. You are allowed to play multiple positions, and its the way the league is trending. There are articles everywhere about it.
  7. this isnt directed at you because I know you understand but - its good to have options and flexibility.
  8. And you think that playing Breg at 3b vs 2b is the difference between .574 and .393? And also I said hard, not impossible.
  9. I agree and dont forget , they went out and made hugely impactful changes to the mlbpa because it just made too much sense to keep someone back as long as possible (so you have them cheap through their prime years). If it made sense to rush call-ups, they wouldnt have had to add the draft pick rewards for calling up prospects before you absolutely have to. People just want to see the youth
  10. The italicized part cant be undone. I dont disagree with the idea, just the urgency of it. SOrry to sound like a broken record but wait and see.
  11. Similarly , starting the season with Bregman at 2b isnt the end of the world either. Not implying its ideal or how it will certainly go down. Its quite hard to ruin the season in April (injuries aside)
  12. Good points, but Im would add one big caveat to this and that is (to your entire well thought out post): * *at this point in time One of my things is flexibility and not making decisions before you have to. We simply dont know how Casas will look coming off that weird injury, how Devers shoulder will behave, if Campbell complicates by forcing his way into the infield, how far we go next year. What if we get to the ALCS and lose and we prove to be close despite carrying Casas all year who never fully re-found his groove (not saying this is anything more than one of many possibilities). Can it happen? Short answer is yes. Will it happen? Short answer is maybe. Should it happen? short answer is things will change between now and the time when its time to make this decision, and any opinions we have on it now will be dated by then
  13. I think hes a solid #4 when healthy and I think its a loss. Not an insurmountable loss, but how many starters do we use in a given year? 10? It hurts the depth.
  14. Isnt Fogel McLovin?
  15. The Red Sox 3rd baseman is TBD. Lot of moving parts, and we need the spring to see if prospects force their way on, Devers health, any other injuries... There is simply no reason to make a final decision right now. My hunch is our 3b next year is going to be Devers some of the time, Bregman some of the time, maybe Christian Campbell some of the time, maybe another dude some of the time. But I think its fluid.
  16. Agreed. I do wish that there was only an opt out after year 2 , but I agree with you that its not a deal breaker or to fret about that he has an opt out after each year
  17. The RS upcoming season feels a lot like "you dont need to be able to outrun a lion, just outrun the other dudes also running from the lion." We dont have to be good, just stink less than the other mediocre teams in the AL (to make the playoffs). From that lens, I can see a good defensive c making an impact, but they shouldnt. Its like joining a league where nobody else knows what they are doing and then just making it into the playoffs. Its like congrats but it shouldnt have been that close.
  18. If an average C turns out to be our steal of the winter, even factoring in acquisition cost, I have a hard time believing we're finishing higher than third place. I dont think going from Wong to average C moves the needle that much, personally. But the outcome is possible. I think 1 of 3 things happen: 1. Crochet is a cy young candidate 2. We make aggressive in season moves 3. We arent serious contenders (but may sneak into playoffs because I think the AL is painfully weak)
  19. I dont think any catcher could be the steal of the winter. I think 90% of catchers can be lumped in with each other. Could be wrong
  20. Most of us would want Bregman at 3yrs / 75M. Most of us would want him at 2 yrs / 60M. But hes just not at the point where he is willing to accept a short term deal, and I dont think he will get there (I think he'll find a 5 yr deal). If the 5 yr offers get pulled and he overplays his hand and he has to retreat to a short term contract, then of course, we'll be interested. But it really doesnt make sense for him to take a 1 yr deal. Everyone knows he can still play at a high level, so I think he has more to lose than to gain to kick the can down the road 1 yr, and see whats available 1 yr from now when hes 1 yr older (coming off a 1 yr deal, even if he's 5 WAR in that year)
  21. I agree. Not thinking of any posters/fans in mind, but even some of my personal friends....Its like 1) Why dont the sox spend money! How did they let themselves get and remain so mediocre this 1/2 decade ..... and then 2) (After every FA signing, league wide) What an overpay! You cant have it both ways. Again, not directed at anybody here. Unless Bregman has all offers of 5yrs+ pulled, he isnt taking a shorter one. I agree at this point, we are long shots at best for him, and Ive made my peace with that. He was always a plan C behind Soto and Teoscar.
  22. In the beginning of the offseason, i wanted to upgrade oneill but considered him an acceptable fallback, but ive moved on from both options at this point in time and agree.
