  1. Ty. Finally some sense. To replace Devers bat, it will cost way more than the 280M we shedded. Maybe that bat, which will cost 40% more may be able to play a lousy 1B, so maybe that makes it a better value (saracasm) Most likely they will get another Giolito with the money saved, who will promptly get hurt, and your Boston mediocre Sox continue to be just that.
  2. Try as they might, I doubt highly there is even a .900 OPS bat available. Bats like Devers arent easy to acquire.
  3. Y'all just renewed a 5 yr contract to be the boston mid-sox.
  4. If you all think that you can replace Devers bat for 30m , you are mistaken. Devers contract was before the market reset. Devers signing a contract right now, as a DH, would get 40m/yr + We saved nothing. We'll just have a catcher or a rookie as our lineup anchor. Your BTVs or whatever havent caught up to the new reality. Devers is Beltre, deemed a bad contract due to not keeping up with inflation/trends/shifts. Devers is a top 10 hitter, those are 40m+ yr for just the bat.
  5. Hitting is 80% of the game , not half (excluding pitching). Theres a reason why all glove, no bat players go for much cheaper. If Devers played a lousy 3b, you mean to tell me his WAR would go up? That doesnt make sense to me. To me, there is very little difference between an average fielder and a DH.
  6. If WAR tells you that a DH is only worth 6 WAR capped, then something is wrong with WAR. Papi was worth his weight in gold and more valuable than any other position player that played for the sox at all during his tenure. Papi would be worth 40m today, easy.
  7. Yup it is- for sure. But your current Red Sox, that have spent 6 years trying to rebuild back into a good team, just fell pretty far back. Feelings/maturity/blame-game doesnt change that. Not to dismiss all of that, I understand that more than talent matters. But Im personally, having trouble coming to terms with the fact that we are now worse as a team, even if the players are like good riddance about it.
  8. Exactly. If you need to play players at a non-optimal position to make room for an elite bat, you do it. You dont trade an elite bat for peanuts and then celebrate that you can arrange your positional players in a more ideal way. Unless you are an elite CF, SS, C - you are in the bigs to hit.
  9. If you are a good defensive player , it matters. But if you are not, whether you play a lousy position x or DH.
  10. To me, Devers received a contract of 331/11 or 30.1M/yr. It was 35m for his bat, -4.9M for his 3b defense. He has more value as a DH than risking injury, and stinking it up at defensive 3b. His value went up when he stopped playing the field. Now if the team wants him to play 1B, thats worth lets say .1M / yr to me. These are peanuts relative to his value (his bat). Yes, a DH can be worth 30.1 and he was. The fact that he wouldnt move, and sat there pouting and isolated - immature - sure. But he was still well worth his contract even as a DH(he's worth 35m as a DH, maybe 35.1 as a 1B). So no, we are not better. Unless you are an impact player defensively, it frankly just doesnt matter. This was dumb on all parties. It was so minor whether Devers plays 1b or dh and it cost us our best hitter. Good luck replacing those runs created. We may, but getting the DH spot back, does not matter to me. I dont care if Roman or Duran DHs now vs before they would have had to learn 1B. Its not like Devers is a 3 WAR better 1b than Duran or Roman would have been. Because frankly, it matters very little who is playing 1B. Call it DH2. 9 best hitters, shifting around mediocre (or worse) defensive players does not matter. It frankly does not matter much at all if KC plays 2b, 3b, 1b, dh. Cedanne should play CF because thats why hes here. Nav should play C because thats why hes here. Anybody else - its inconsequential.
  11. Im fine with Romy in the game, but why not put him at 1b and Mayer at 3b? Does Toro need to play this game? Too hot to sit? And even if you start with Mayer on the bench, am I missing something when I question why not flip Mustache and Toro positionally.
  12. What about Brock Holt as an example of someone who made the AS team due to name/nickname reasons. He was nicknamed the "the brock star", and i think it helped him get the AS votes.
  13. I don't see Anthony or Duran playing 1B - maybe not but I think its rigid thinking (not on your part, the team's). If you were willing to experiment Devers at 1b, why not experiment with Duran? Because his speed would be wasted. Okay, so lets go get a lesser player and put him there because Duran is too valuable to play 1B. So where does Duran go? The bench? We had to bench you because you are too valuable to waste at 1b! Wouldnt be the first time. The Red sox traded Laroche for kacey kotchman because laroche was too good to not play everyday so they swapped him straight up for a less talented player. Youre too good to only play 60% of the time so we're gonna swap you for someone worse.
  14. If Buehler has figured it out, theres less urgency. Im not sold Toro will continue to hit like this. So wait and see there. Didnt realize Romy was so good vs l. Really dont understand why people are against platoons when you can do things like turn toro/romy into a .900 ops guy on the cheap, lol. Is 5 bench players really so far out there that it shan't be considered these days? If I was a manager, Id have a backup C and 4 platoons, Keep some starters in the pen or use the farm to expand the pen due to having one less guy there. Options are on the season so if you send one guy up and down all year, its 1 option. Feels exploitable to me (in a good way). If we are to make a move, I lean towards its cuz we NEED a starter not because of a logjam. I really dont believe that any player needs to play every day. Im okay with a rotation of 5 outfielders. Especially if Toro cools off and Anthony or Duran play 1B. It really doesnt bother me. Knowing what I know now, that Romy (who i like) is mashing lefties, I say, go 5 bench players and trade prospects for pitching. Or start giving farm SPs some auditions now if they are on teh 40 man. Early? Sandlin? Im a believer that fresh arms who batters havent seen have an advantage.
  15. Its Romy who would be the odd man out. Anybody except for Abreu, Devers, Cedanne, Nav can play 1B against lefties. You can live with Duran playing 1B 30% of the time, ditto Bregman, ditto literally anybody except the ones I have listed.
  16. Bold can be true as well as Hitch's point that service-time gamesmanship was taken into account And its also more than just hitting FA one year earlier, its also the clock on arb and arb raises. But ultimately I agree more with you that its at least as much to do with this year than LT because nobody should be throttling back on this year at this point in time (looks at MVP)
  17. CF, 2B, SS, RF, LF, 3B, 1B Rafaela LF, CF, RF, 1B Duran LF, RF, 1B Anthony & Refsnyder RF, LF, CF, 1B Abreu (CF) 2B, CF, SS, 3B, 1b Campbell SS, 2B, 1B Story SS, 3B, 2B, 1B Mayer 3B, 2B, 1B, LF (emergency SS) Bregman 1B, SS, 2B Romy (AAA: DHam 2B) 1B, 3B Toro C Narvaez & Wong (1B, emergency 2B) DH Devers (1B? & emergency 3B) Even more versatile than you present it.
  18. The Red sox are a coin-flip to make the postseason this year per Vegas (right now). To quote John Goodman "nothing is F'd, dude"
  19. They saw this as an opportunity to say "we spun Nick Yorke into all this" and couldnt resist.
  20. I cant tell if you got my reference/joke which was made for an audience of one (you)
