As in he's passive (doesnt swing enough) and smashes the ball into the ground when he does swing He's very good dont get me wrong, but Im not comfortable with him being considered such a high driver as our offense. If the writing on the wall comes to fruition, and Duran is traded (I am much less against this than I previously was) - I think RA will step in well as leadoff man. We have a profile that is going to get on base a lot. Lot of walks, hes very patient. A lot of going the other way (those two things generally go hand in hand), a lot of singles through the left side of the infield. He hits a lot of low-liners. These balls are crushed, dont get me wrong, so he'll always have a high BABIP. But I see limitations. He's primarily a table setter without elite or even very good wheels. He'll keep the line moving and do his thing, but I want two punishing bats, and I dont count his. Now bring back Bregman and get Alonso and we are talking. Thats a great top 3 w RA. But I dont think hes going to carry anything offensively. I think hes more of a good complimentary piece. Because his flaw is that hes a worm killer and it will cap his potential. He hits the ball very hard, he hits the ball into the ground very often. Thats exactly what a worm killer is. THey dont call you a worm killer if you roll over everything, even if those groundballs tend to get through, like Verdugo. You have to smash the ground to be a worm killer and thats exactly what RA is. I wish he was faster.

Like I said, I didnt realize you were thinking this much $$ for suarez and i thought you thought hed be a steal, and i was worried that you would bound to be disappointed because convincing a player why he doesnt deserve $x when he has a contract offer in hand for that $ hardly works. Not directing that at you but so many conversations ive had in the past, just assuming that player x will sign for a specified amount of money/years because the person telling me this thinks they can justify it. But going above 90m for suarez does make it feel like hes a real possibility. I agree that JH seems to hate long term commitments so maybe keep going after guys on short term, but you dry up the budget fast this year because you give the higher AAV to compensate less on the back end, and I understand why people clamor for it, but it does kind of overlook inflation. And the upside. Sign a guy for term and he breaks out, now you have a steal. You dont really get that on a 1 yr deal. But im good with everything in your first paragraph. And regarding your third paragraph, yeah, it does seem like we arent in this awesome position going forward and we need to get creative. We need to improve the hitting, and pitching, while losing Bregman and dealing with significant raises that dry up a lot of the money saved. I think we are going to need to snake someone.

A 1143 BA on how many at-bats for Masa? Anthony is a ground-ball hitter. Okamoto, I know nothing about. Hoskins just got benched and Bregman just opted out of 40m AAV. Replacing guys who opt out of lucrative deals because they can get more and thinking we'll come out ahead replacing them with guys who didnt make their teams playoffs roster last year feels very hopium to me. Not arguing with you, but just expressing my thoughts. Maybe Brezzzz shouldnt have blown the budget on guys he could have kept cheap.

Going into this next season , I struggle whether or not to count Anthony. I think hes a monster of a regression candidate. Whats his batting average on balls hit into the ground? If we trade Duran for Lodolo and sign Suarez to replace Bregman, the offense is worse. And I dont care how many worms Roman Anthony kills, hes not going to make that okay.

Im not trying to talk you out of anything. Im simply stating that your "fair" contract to Bregman is BELOW what he opted out of, so you think Suarez is better AND cheaper. Well, hed have to be a lot cheaper since there appears to be a significant gap between where you and Bregman think Bregman should land. If Bregman gets 4/160, its hard to see Suarez going for 2/50. But you answered my q, and you are willing to give suarez a higher aav than I thought you had in mind, which makes him a possibility and us a candidate for him.

Seen that movie before, and it ends with us going into the playoffs with Masa as our cleanup hitter and second half of hte lineup full of noodlebats.

If Bregman is too expensive for your tastes, what do you think that implies for Suarez? Im not sure the market is that inefficient, unless Suarez gets labeled a DH.

Realize that 150/6 is better for the club than 150/5, even if he doesnt play that sixth year and has to be carried because it spreads out the lux tax hit.

Mayer in AAA is fantastic depth, but we may have too many holes and not enough resources to allow for this. But if Mayer is your starting 3b, and story is your ss , you are starting with 2 guys with an injury history and who knows who plays 2b. You will be seeing a lot of noodlebats, once the injuries start. I find it likley that Bregman and his agent understand the market better than we do. Could be wrong, but I suspect Bregman will get longer term at a similar AAV, so if you think this is a blessing in disguise, I have to think we'll get less for same money :/
