  1. The O has been the most inconsistent. When the entire line-up struggles against a pitcher with command, in-game adjustments need to be made at the plate. Seeing veteran batters shorten up swings and hit to the opposite field has been the right approach lately for guys like Story, Bregman and Lowe, and is also a key for free swingers like Rafaela, Duran and Narvaez.
  2. I agree Brez not bolstering the line-up could be fatal, but if he's to blame, how can we fault benchwarmers and platoon players for not coming through? Won't it be more of a miracle if these guys, inspired by Cora the magician, actually make the playoffs? The mighty Red Sox, featuring a clean-up man with 2 home runs on the season... meanwhile, Yoshida is batting .327 in September -- and relying on a guy who was cut last year by the worst team in history... Romy, batting .367 this month.
  3. The hero is the bullpen. BoSox got timely hits from Lowe and Narvaez last night, but there's nothing like four relievers throwing a no-hitter vs. the team leading the majors in hits, batting average and on base percentage. The Sox will go as far as Wilson, Whitlock, Slaten and Chapman can carry them.
  4. And check the check the checks.
  5. After last night, the Tigers-Guardians series means less to us. Houston can't beat out Boston for a wild card unless the Astros win one more game than the Red Sox in the final five. So if the Sox go 2-3, the Stros need to go 5-0. Even if the Sox win just one more to finish 1-4, it will still be a tall task for a slumping club like Houston to finish 4-1. But I still wouldn't want to be Detroit wobbling into Fenway this weekend with all the pressure of history squeezing their tracheas.
  6. Pedro came via trade, but the free agent HE recruited helped win three rings: Big Papi.
  7. If there wasn't enough to overturn Safedanne Rafaela, there wasn't enough to overturn Bregman being safe... NEW YORK.
  8. Your post does not belong on A Fatalistic View of the Last Days of 2025. But it could be on An Opportunistic View of the Last Days of 2025.
  9. Now that we've seen all the Red Sox top-rated hitting and pitching prospects drink at least a cup of coffee in the majors, it kinda makes you wonder if only Boston's fans and media fell for the hype machine. Anthony looks decent on D and circling the bags, but shows two legit tools to be a star hitter: barrels and reaching base. The rest of the potential regulars -- Campbell, Mayer, Garcia -- show promise in the minors, but possess maybe only one or two assets that can contribute to MLB wins... so far. Narvaez, while not developed in the org, seems solid, but with flaws that can improve, like blocking bad pitches and making two-strike contact. On the mound, though, the young arms were maybe guys other clubs coveted more -- Early (who Brez turned down a bid for), Dobbins and his command, or Tolle and his fastball extension.
  10. They may have viewed the Bregman signing from the beginning as his replacement, and Raffy being a selfish jerk just made the plan even easier. Bregman's opt out may also be part of the plan, as they expected him to leave after an All-Star season -- which it has been (at least when he made the AL squad after a great first half). The $80 million saved when Bregman leaves could be funds to lock up Marcelo Mayer longterm -- if he shows more star potential next season. We can be sure there are some in the front office who view six more years of Mayer in his 20s as more valuable than two more of Bregman in his 30s.
  11. Breslow is gold right now to Henry for the biggest accomplishment of the season: ridding the Sox of Devers' contract. While consensus among fans and media has always been that the Raffy trade was the ultimate consequence of major miscommunication and mishandling by the front office, why have no personnel ever been punished or even reprimanded in public... ... for losing and not replacing the club's top home run hitter/run producer/on base/slugging/OPS leader? (on a team that might just miss the playoffs because of a lack of offense that couldn't even overcome an injury to one rookie who wasn't called up to the majors for over two months after he proved he was good enough?)
  12. this is A Realistic View of 2025: the Blue Jays not only have the best record in the AL, but the best home record: in Toronto, they are 50-25. Since the Jays win 2 out of every 3 games at home all season, it is realistic to expect Boston -- tepid at best all month -- to go 1-2 this week. That's not the end of the world, though, since Cleveland vs. Detroit means one of them is guaranteed to lose at least 2. But then the Red Sox will pretty much have to win the final series at Fenway Park this weekend to get into the postseason... which is full frontal feasible with the added adrenaline of a raucous weekend crowd, and suffocating pressure on the visitors to stave off what could be an all-time epic choke.
  13. Fanfools parfait gives the following odds: +- 0% chance Red Sox win today, +- 0% chance Red Sox lose today. The over-under is a neutral integer. However much you don't bet today, they will double that amount in invisible ink.
  14. All very logical. But we're talking about the 2025 Red Sox, who struggle to score, even when loading the bases with no outs. Over and over... which also makes it logical at this point to call a suicide squeeze in every game down the stretch. And just so fans won't think these Left On Base LOBSTERS are a rarity in Beantown, read on: yes, the '25 Sox lead all of baseball in average LOBs per game (15.23 according to Fangraphs) -- but this is a tradition! I can't make this stuff up: the all-time American League record for most LOBs in one game is 13 by Dustin Pedroia (15 innings, 9/15/2017)... who broke by one the previous AL mark, established by Trot Nixon (13 innings, 6/12/2003)... who tied the old AL record of 12 set by David Oritz (12 innings, 5/14/2009). The all-time record for most LOBs by one team in a nine-inning game also took place at Fenway Park on September 21, 1956. That game was won by the Red Sox, 13-7, because they only left 5 on base. The Yankees left 20.
  15. Just trying to be realistic, since they're playing the team with the best record in the league, in Toronto, where the Jays will be fighting to clinch the AL East, the top seed, and a first-round bye. If the Sox can win one of the next three, it can set up a showdown with the Tigers at Fenway that may determine the final wild card, with loser go home. If Game #162 is a must-win for both Detroit and Boston, what are the odds that either or both Hinch and Cora start their aces, Skubal and Crochet, on short rest? At least one front office will try to forbid it -- too much invested in the future, plus we need him in a best-of-three series... and at least one manager will shrug and say, We Gotta Get There First.
  16. Best case scenario that will never happen is that the Tigers sweep in Cleveland, thus clinching the Central, and then rest all their regulars in Fenway to intentionally let the Sox make the playoffs as a weak opponent. Such strategy may backfire on Detroit, though, because Boston is starting half its bench every game already this month (well, at least platoon-worthy guys, besides Bregman and Story).
  17. Be a shame to leave them exposed to the Rule X draft -- it's a new draft where teams pick players that are original clubs are then forced to keep.
  18. If the Red Sox players were service vehicles, Duran would be a cement-mixer.
  19. Sending a guy when you have men on second and third and no outs -- and trailing by 3 runs -- can only be considered a smart risk when it's the Red Sox... .... because it's not even guaranteed the next three batters will make contact.
  20. If Early can shut out the Rays the rest of the game, while the Sox just score their average runs per game, Boston will win by almost 2 runs (1.92 exactly -- which probably means Hamilton slides headfirst towards home, but never reaches the plate when his oven mitt pops off)
  21. To quote the Pointers Sisters, "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide, I'm about to lose control and I think it's... (NOT Weissert, NOT Wilson, NOT Kelly -- wait, is that Matz or Slaten... nope...) it's TOLLE, it's TOLLE!"
  22. I do... in the bathtub. Dirt dogs always leave a ring. If they get in, the Sox can compete in any pitchers' duel -- as long as they keep bunting guys over and shooting liners, grounders and flies to right field. If they swing from the heels, they could get no-hitted two games in a row.
