    I don't know anything about the St. Loo org, but with such consistently high finishes (and thus, low draft picks), they must have a superior scouting system. Why didn't Henry rob them of their execs?

    Great question. I really enjoy following entire baseball seasons when my team is contending. Watching pro sports is all about entertainment, and as long as my team is in it, that's entertaining. I'll never be a Yankee fan and say the season was a failure if we win but don't win it all, especially after making the playoffs. Only one club ever wins the last game of any season, and to be totally unsatisfied if that's not your team is unreasonable and elitist. But last place seasons suck, and drain the fun out of being a fan. As a Red Sox fan, I wouldn't trade this century because of what I went through last century. However, it wouldn't be so bad to be a Cardinals fan; a winning record every single year since 2000, first or second place 15 times, in the postseason 15 times, won 2 WS, lost 2 WS... (ya, to Boston, but we owed them).

    Right, it's all about what's happening now. That's why it's so lame for the past 20 years to keep showing Bucky Dent's pop-up from 1978... especially when a lot of other things keep happening with the Yankees and Red Sox on the diamond.

    Sure... he wouldn't be bitter at the media nor the organization at all, especially with so many potential disrespected free agents roaming the clubhouse on a last place team. But hey, we need more placeholders on the roster!

    Bah, I mock cynics -- they only attribute the worst possible motives to people's actions. I never said the gentlemen who run the Red Sox have bad motives; they're entrusted by a business to turn profits, and they always succeed. I just call them out as full of crap when they insist they're all-in -- every single year -- building a roster that supposedly will contend for a World Series title. Fans do understand that may unreasonable every single year... especially entering a season without, say, a back-end of the bullpen, right-handed hitting outfielder, left-handed first baseman, and any bench player who can pinch-hit vs. a big league pitcher and advance a ghost runner one base.

    Come on, jad -- one of those prospects we get for a big league star and homegrown fan favorite might actually make the majors someday!

    I just can't take Bloom or Kennedy or Warner seriously as long as Cordero is the "first baseman" on this all-in Red Sox team intent on turning around this horrendous start, and going for it, to contend -- like they always do -- to try to win a World Series. I have nothing against Franchy personally, and hope he hangs around long enough to draw a full pension, but he is not a big league ballplayer, not in the outfield (his "natural" position), not in the batter's box and certainly not at first base. His negative career WAR means his overall value is below that of a replacement player. If the all-in Red Sox were really going for it, it wouldn't take much to acquire a legitimate MLB first baseman. But they're not, and Franchy is just a placeholder for Boston's top prospect -- who needs more time to fail and adjust... so the Sox actually won't lose another year of his service time.

    But are we really rushing a pitcher if he strikes out two per inning and hasn't walked a batter yet? He's throwing to the same size plate as Gausman.

    Of course you're right on the development aspect, but my point is twofold: a guy like German has struggled already, but in his fourth year in pro ball has finally found success, and the Sox are desperate for reinforcements in the bullpen. And yet, Bloom tells the Nation to be patient... for what, for the Red Sox to actually truly be good again and honestly all-in going for it? If so, just level with us -- we're big boys and girls, we can take it.

    Frank German, the prospect the Yankees gave Boston to take Ottavino's contract a year ago, has been a lights-out reliever for Portland: 8 IP, 3-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 BB, 15 K. Those numbers are near perfect. Isn't that the kind of guy the all-in parent club would promote to help them go for it? Or is Bloom waiting for him to fail in the minors so he can make the proper adjustments to prepare for failure in the bigs? He's 24 years old.

    If we're replacing players, the first thing I'd do is package Houck and Crawford and trade them. Houck can bring back some value, and letting him go "do anything" (except always be available) to another club sends a message to the Red Sox or at least Red Sox fans that we're all in this together -- just like the first-place unified Yankees.

    Maybe, but if they officially punt, don't look for either Sale or Paxton to have a regular role in any late-season play-out-the-string. And this would mostly be about protecting the financial obligations -- not investments -- and making sure their arms are 100% (or whatever is left, 75%?) for next year, when the club may have a better chance. If they blow it up, there's no reason not to promote three or four close-to-ready MLB arms to get a taste of The Show.

    But imagine the savings if they dumped half a dozen veteran salaries! What's the worst thing that can happen: they bring up six minor leaguers and they strikeout all the time? At least Sam Kennedy can then book Dire Straits for a concert at Fenway, and they can replace "Sweet Caroline" with "We are the Sultans of Swing and Miss"

    Bogaerts will waive his no-trade clause, and not just because of a chance to play for a club doing what it takes to win. The front office made sure of it before the season by letting him know how much he wasn't wanted here.

    I know this is a bullpen thread, but it conjures this query: why are the other teams' pens Ghostbusters vs. Sox batters? Does everyone else have better relievers or do we have worse hitters? And since there are no quick fixes -- even if he tries, Bloom can't replace SIX empty spots in the batting order with MLB bats -- isn't it time to talk about at least changing the offensive approach to the existing hitters with non-existent production????? Choke-up, shorten-up, play pepper, wear one for the team, learn how to f***ing bunt... do something different than flail!!!
